All this is because #Ethiopia says it should also use her God given resources just like everyone else, #water , to take 65 million people out of darkness. It is an existential necessity for #Ethiopia to use #Nile . Only cooperation gets everyone to win-win solution. #GERD #Ethiopia

Sad to see #Tunisia working 24/7 on behalf of #Egypt to #UNSC . Bottom line: this is to force a 0% water use for #Ethiopia who generates 86% of the #Nile flow. Sounds equitable water use to you? Do #Ethiopian have the right to drink ANY water from the #Nile ? That is the BIG ??

#Ethiopia seems to execute perfectly crafted plan in this third filling. It acted as an adult in the Eastern #Nile Basin. Filling #GERD with no significant impact to downstream countries is what you are witnessing TODAY. High Aswan Dam is filled to the brim, & no impact to #Sudan

Facts 1) #Egypt has FIVE times more per capita groundwater than #Ethiopia [1] 2) #Ethiopia ’s main water resource IS surface water, where 69% is locked in Nile basin and 75% of its land classified as dryland [2] 3) #Sudan and #Egypt want to take 100% of this surface water [3] 1/3

#Ethiopia reached a milestone of storing 22 bcm over 3yrs and start operating a second turbine, bringing installed capacity of #GERD to 750 MW. It did so by using <10% of its annual total #Nile water contribution each year. Talk about ZERO downstream impact.

#Egypt is currently sitting on record water both ABOVE ground (Aswan High Dam at record (~160 Billion Cubic Meter (BCM)) and BELOW ground (55,000 BCM). Just evaporation is ~17 BCM. How is 13.5 BCM summer filling with plenty of Nile flow framed as if the country is going dry?🤔

News of #GERD electricity generation in a matter of weeks is a BIG milestone. Besides the electricity, it will allow engineers to control flow, quickly dry the central block and start building back up. Drying the central block last year went to April. #ETH 2014: A game changer!

2nd year filling of #GERD comes at a time when record water is stored at High Aswan Dam, which has reached the highest June level in 30-years! Higher than normal rain for western #Ethiopia including #Sudan means great time to fill. We see no significant downstream impact!

We continue to see near record rainfall & flow in western #Ethiopia including #Sudan (~200% to 600% above normal) at this early stage of the season. This makes the watershed saturated like “sponge” and give way for increased river flow this summer. Great time to #FillTheDam !

The much reported “binding agreement” that supposedly #Egypt and #Sudan want but not #Ethiopia refers to the need to have a flexible agreement that is adaptable as climate changes. Ethiopia doesn't want to mortgage its future generation with a loan they won’t afford to pay for.

Damn if you do, damn if you don’t. When we said the second filling won’t impact #Egypt with HAD at 30-year high, they said it would impact them. Now, they say why #Ethiopia didn’t hold more water. No wonder why it is impossible to get to any agreement.

#Egypt and #Sudan are acting as if the [Nile] water originates from their lands and they expect #Ethiopia to accept all the decisions made by Egypt, which is against the reality on the ground.“ -Ambassador Ibrahim Idris, #GERD negotiator. Fair-share!

. @AJEnglish trying hard to find "environmental impact” of current #GERD filling to downstream countries. They came up with a short video titled “Sudan fears effects of Ethiopia dam on environment, livelihoods” [1] They came with two example "studies" to make their point.

Egyptian expert: #GERD negotiating is not working because of “South Africa’s collusion with #Ethiopia and support for its stances since the beginning.....[whereas] DRC’s presidency of the #AU might be better” #DRC is not even pretending to be neutral.

Nile basin water use should be driven by science for equitable and fair allocation of water for everyone. NOT by lobbyist! @JoeBiden admin knows this & should not be “putting its thumb on the scale in favor of Egypt “ as Trump did ( @AmbShinn ) Make your voice heard! Retweet.

This left #Egypt the only card it can play now: “ #Egypt still wants #Ethiopia to ask a permission to #FillTheDam even if it doesn’t impact downstream countries”. That is an argument no one is going to buy.

A powerful statement by #Ethiopian Deputy PM on #UNGA77 on the significance of #GERD achievement to date. “Our project [ #GERD ] commenced lighting our homes and fulfilling inter-generational aspiration”. When all is said and done this will be what changed #Ethiopia 's trajectory.

Their River. Their town. The People.👇 This is one of #Abbay tributaries I visited today, lots of sediment laden water coming down. Not worried about the quantity of water to #FillTheDam this summer. Lots of it already. Scary to see fertile soil going down the drain🤔.

Interesting conversation by Dr. @seleshi_b_a and Helen @yehelenshow . Among so many topics that were raised, here are some on #GERD 3rd filling and access to electricity in #Ethiopia .👇 ➡️There isn’t even slightest impact to downstream countries because of the third filling. 1/3

Al-Ahram to me: Hey Dr. Asefa what do you think is the major obstacle for #Egypt , #Ethiopia , and #Sudan to reach an agreement, and can they move forward? Me: #GERD is being used as a water sharing instrument. #Ethiopia finds its ZERO percent Nile water a nonstarter. 1/3

Just released updated rainfall outlook for the summer shows even a much more increased rainfall outlook than last month. This looks great for #GERD filling and once more again will potentially help #Sudan from flooding. Tune in on Saturday as we will talk about this. @WeAspire

What a day! #GERD is not just for #Ethiopia but helps greatly both #Sudan and #Egypt . E.g, Sudan's benefit according to their own study? US$47-83 billion GDP increase 👉 This doesn't even include avoided cost in flood protection, which devastates them. 1/2

How? In order to quash even the slightest complaint from #Sudan , #Ethiopia proactively opened the two bottom outlets few months ago and have been sending significant amount of water to downstream. It waited for the hydrology to play out knowing this year is wetter than average.

An interesting statistic on the claimed #GERD "impact" to #Egypt : In the last four years, 50% MORE water evaporated from High Aswan Dam than what #Ethiopia stored in those four years! Now you know where the water should be stored in the #Nile basin. #Ethiopia #Egypt #Sudan

1/4 Great question. I can only say this: lots of noise and distraction going on right now. I believe the right path for the three countries ( #Egypt , #Ethiopia , and #Sudan ) is to find a way to share fairly and equitably the Nile River flow. The science tells me that is possible.

#Egypt complained "unilateral" move by #Ethiopia to store 4.9 BCM, but quietly stored FIVE times more (~ 24 BCM) just from this summer's flood flow while still diverting significant water to Toshka. Making a scene for 4.9 BCM while storing > 24.5 BCM.

In addition to water that goes through the turbine, the two bottom outlets can send the entire Blue #Nile annual flow. Not a coincidence you haven’t heard complaint from #Sudan this year. Plenty of water is going down. #GERD IS helping #Sudan from flooding we expect this year.
