I don’t know what happened between Coach Howard and Coach Turgeon. What I do know is this. If I am a 5-Star Blue Chip recruit watching the game at home, I am thinking, I want to play for a guy that fights for his players like Juwan Howard at Michigan!

Juwan Howard is the National Coach of the Year right now. Mark Few at Gonzaga & Scott Drew at Baylor are undefeated and were preseason #1 & #2 in CBB . They’ve done what was expected. Michigan was ranked #6 preseason in the Big Ten. They have far exceeded every expectation.

Michigan’s 43-6 run against top 10 Wisconsin was the most dominant stretch of basketball all year - NBA or College! 16 baskets - 7 layups, 4 dunks & 4 uncontested 3’s, only 1 midrange J. Seven scored, near perfection on defense. I am in awe of what I watched last night!!!

Wow Elated!!! Michigan played like a #1 seed. Brown & Brooks with 41. Franz was passive for 30 minutes and then dominated. 10 3’s, won the rebound game, low turnovers & the D held LSU to 36 in the second half. Go Blue!!!

Michigan’s Sweet 16 run is highly improbable. 7 of 9 in the rotation are underclassmen or transfers. Juwan’s suspension was a distraction. 1st round Big10 Tourney loss. Barely made the tournament. Devante’ Jones hasn’t been healthy. Michigan is a team of destiny.

The last three games when Michigan was down at half vs OSU, CSU & Tennessee I got on the elliptical for the entire second half. In those games M was down a total of 25 and won all three. A coincidence. I think not. I will be ready to go on Thursday. Go Blue!

Phil Martell will deflect the credit, but he was brilliant. So was Devante Jones. Without Hunter clogging the post, Michigan’s P&R game & spacing was the best all year. 11-11 second half free throws & only 6 turnovers. Kobe Bufkin will be a star. Remember that 3.

Juwan Howard was in charge of the Miami Heat defense 4 years & they were regularly top 10 in the NBA. Michigan made strong defensive adjustments, gave up only 28 Creighton points in the 2nd half, locked up their top 2 scorers, only 7 fouls committed, no BlueJay FTs made.

I remain optimistic that Isaiah Livers will play again for Michigan. He played vs Maryland & moved fairly well under the circumstances. The medical staff has already worked a minor miracle to get Eli Brooks back. Isaiah has 14 full days of treatment/rest until the Sweet 16.

Michigan must play smaller to beat Nova. Their shooting/Pick & Roll game’s too strong. Moussa & Caleb seldom play well together. In 10 of the last 11 one scored in double figures & the other didn’t. Play the high impact guy & sit the other. Also, play Terrance Williams more.

Juwan Howard promised a faster pace this year. So far Michigan is #2 in Big Ten scoring at 85 PPG, #1 in FG%, #1 in 3 pt% & is averaging 30 PPG from 3. The greatest improvement from last year is the outlet passing to start their break.

Colorado St is a favorable matchup for Michigan unless they ignore their size advantage. Up 13 at half vs IU. Hunter w/ 13 points was unstoppable. He spent the entire 2nd half setting perimeter screens. 2 pts & a loss If you’re big & don’t use your size it’s a disadvantage.

When I was 12, I thought I was a pretty good BB player. I played my Dad 1-on-1 and quickly learned I had a long way to go. Michigan’s young guys went to school vs SHall and it was a good loss. M needs to contain the ball on D & establish a reliable #3 scorer. All Good!

I watched Moussa Diabate’s entire Draft Combine workout in-person on Wed. No body-fat He out-jumped the highest setting on the max vertical Ran like a sprinter Shot well on corner 3’s He reminded me of Bam Adebayo in his combine workout in 2017 Also, he will interview well.

Update from @umichbball practice. I was impressed with Xavier Simpson’s shot. Much improved. The arc & accuracy were better. Looks like he moved his release point to the right so it’s directly over his elbow. 31% from 3 from last year will improve.

I watched Michigan Basketball commit Hunter Dickinson at the TOP 100 Camp. He is a future NBA player with tremendous versatility & room to grow. Similar to Jon Teske, a post-presence w/ 3-point potential & a solid pick & roll attack. A perfect fit in Michigan’s NBA style attack.

Knowing what we know now, Zavier Simpson fouling out could be a blessing in disguise. He only played 17 minutes. The confidence of DeJulius & Brooks must be sky-high. He will be the freshest guard that sees the court for Michigan tomorrow.

After @umichbball practice on Saturday I watched Xavier Simpson getting up extra shots. At one point I counted 14-20 from 3. It appears that college basketball’s best defensive point guard is making great strides from the three-point line.

Are you concerned that Hunter Dickinson declared for the NBA Draft? Don’t be. It’s a part of his growth process. He will hear that he’s a 2nd round pick right now & he can still improve his conditioning, perimeter shooting & screen game. His future is bright. One more year!

Kudos to @H_Dickinson24 for expanding his game with a right hand jump hook. He may not need it vs. Wayne State in November, but will be glad he has it vs Kofi Cockburn on January 14. I bet he took 10,000 jump hooks over his left shoulder and it looks beautiful.

For Michigan Basketball, the little things make the biggest difference. No-one does a better job of contesting shots without fouling. They do not go for shot-fakes. 9 in the rotation - All 9 have scored in double figures. They have the most enthusiastic bench in CBB!

Duncan Robinson’s as a Sr. at Michigan was a one-dimensional, non-defender. He has emerged as a complete player. A solid driver/passer, sets strong screens & moves well off the ball. Smart on D & a trusted shooter. Kudos to an obvious hard worker.

Here is why the Michigan BB team is loaded with enthusiasm. 11 of the top 14 are brand new to the college experience. Last year’s freshmen had no football games or tailgates, no in-person classes & walks across the Diag. No parties & student interaction. Enjoy college guys!

The Michigan win at Rutgers was their best since Gonzaga. Most teams lose energy & focus on D when shots aren’t falling. (M 6-23 from 3). Instead, they elevated their 2nd half defensive effort & had their best game of the year contesting shots.

I saw Terrance Williams at the NBPA TOP 100 Camp. He was teammates with Franz Wagner. He is a great shooter, finisher and plays with lots of grit. He is a perfect fit in Juwan Howard's positionless system at the 3-4. He visits Ann Arbor tomorrow.

When I was in 3rd grade my basketball coach taught me when I post-up my open hand is the target. Don’t pass to the closed fist. The passers understood where to pass the ball. Watching Zach Edey & Hunter Dickinson it’s clear that feeding the post is a lost art. Too bad!
