A level/BTEC results need not ruin lives. @OpenUniversity we are open access. We say try a free course @OUFreeLearning , do a diagnostic assessment or take a free or v low fee access module. Then decide if HE is for you. Our students select us, we don’t select them.

The OU is in a league of its own with the scale of social mobility. 2 million have learned with us & still counting. Continuation is poor indicator for part-time adult learners. Many step off for family, job or health reasons but step back later. Many only aim to complete modules

My BA Geog prepared me to be a seaman, community worker, PhD student, lecturer, local government officer, housing director, vice-chancellor, forecast the weather, read maps, use statistics, program a computer, manage a project and keep learning.

Great news Mark. And from this October @OpenUniversity we’re moving nearly 5,000 Associate Lecturer colleagues from fixed-term contracts to open-ended contracts, and investing £15m a year in more paid time for professional development and leave.

Great piece, but for record OU is investing £10m p.a. to decasualise our 4,000 Associate Lecturers & we’ll soon be biggest we’ve ever been by FTE student nos. Big issue is English policy doesn’t support lower intensity study, so more students are full time

Because if it’s done by raising higher rate taxes (where two-thirds of taxpayers are graduates) & corporation tax (one of lowest rates in OECD), then graduates, society & companies pay in proportion to benefit. Simple, fair & cost-effective compared to bureaucratic loan system.
