I think I found the most exquisite clay pipe in the Thames mud today that I have ever found. When I washed the mud off, this resplendent chap appeared. Just look at his mane. I can't believe people just threw these pipes away! #mudlarking #mudlark

Today's Thames find is one of my most exciting.A log slate belonging to the HMS Merlin (early 19th C).At the end of the day the data on the slate was put into the log book & the slate wiped clean (hence the saying). So literally going into Jan 2022 with a clean slate! #mudlarking

I met this star trooper on the Thames foreshore yesterday looking a bit lost. He might not be ancient history but he does date back to the 80s (one of my favourite decade as it happens) #mudlarking #mudlark #StarWars

"Vagrants" - pottery fragment found on the Thames foreshore last week. Would anyone know what the entire plate or bowl might have said or depicted? I love these little mysteries #mudlarking #mudlark #vagrants

There you are leaning up against a clay tobacco pipe bowl minding your own business in the mud for over 150 years then someone comes along & finds you, films you, then takes you home & runs you under a hot tap! Beautiful 19th C clay pipes found on the Thames #mudlarking #mudlark

I was very excited to have confirmation from the Finds Liaison Officer at the Museum of London that this glass bead found in the Thames is Roman or Iron Age! Its incredible to think that these centuries old personal belongings are still around for us to find! #mudlarking #mudlark

Almost an entire Roman pot with delicate design, found in the Thames mud. You can see a tiny one just next to it. Seen by the Finds Liaison Officer at the Museum of London #mudlarking #mudlark #romanpottery

This 18th C Whale Fishery token dated 1794 was found on the Thames foreshore last week by a friend & was gifted to me! It was a wonderful opportunity to find out about London's whaling past! During the 18th C London was a leading whale port. Heres what I found out - see thread👇

I retrieved this old wine bottle buried In the Thames mud recently. It hadn't seen the light of day for at least a good century ( I think it's early 1900s). Several hours after I cleaned it a beautiful rainbow hue appeared, making it even more special #mudlarking #mudlark

I was due to visit the USA the following week & took the note & ashes in a new bottle with me so that Lorraine's Dad got to travel further than expected. The day I emailed Lorraine to tell her, also happened to be exactly a year to the day that her Dad had died #messageinabottle

Update on this gold ring found in the Thames. It almost certainly was created for Edward Garrett, buried 9 June in London & who left money to his family to create gold rings in his memory. Son of Sir George Garrett, 17th C politician & member of the Worshipful Company of Drapers

A solid gold memento mori ring, 1664, found last night on the banks of the Thames by friend & mudlark Mike (cuffs) Walker. Some examples still retain black & white enamelling on skull, or red for the eyes. Stunning & rare. Treasure & will be reported #mudlarking @ThamesDiscovery

I've now officially found my longest ever clay pipe in the Thames mud! All 34cm of it. It's in 2 pieces but it stuck together perfectly. Repaired pipe pic to come later #mudlarking #mudlark #claypipe

When I first found this piece of lead near Woolwich on a very low tide it was rolled up. When I unfolded it, it revealed a name in retrograde on one side. On researching the name an intriguing story also unfolded! See thread to find out more #mudlarking #mudlark
