We at Iditarod Nation are mourning the loss of 4-time Iditarod Champion, Lance Mackey. Lance passed away late in the evening of September 7, 2022 after a 20+ year battle of cancer. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, fans and the mushing community.
Thanks to the volunteers in White Mountain for sending over video of a few Elim 11 mushers as they arrive. Teams are taking their 8 hour layover and should start leaving tonight around midnight. Expect to see teams into Nome Sunday mid-morning – early afternoon.

Jeremy Keller has made it home. Keller scratched at the 263 mile checkpoint in Nikolai on March 12 and chose to mush back to Willow. Which makes his round trip about 526 miles.

), of Grand Marais, Minnesota, scratched at 4:38 a.m. today at the Ruby checkpoint in the best interest of her team. Altemus had 10 dogs in harness when she arrived in Ruby, all in good health.
In response to COVID-19, the Iditarod has decided to postpone both the Meet the Mushers event on March 21 and its Awards Banquet on March 22 in Nome.

Straw Drop Time! Yesterday, volunteers were busy working with straw, bagging it up, and getting it organized to be shipped out to checkpoints. We call this 'Straw Drop'. When the mushers and dogs arrive in checkpoints during the race, straw will be waiting for each team!

Last night Jeff Deeter, Kelly Maixner, and Aliy Zirkle came in during the storm. It was windy, snowy, and wet. Our camera equipment was soaked. Not sure if anyone got any good photos, since you could barely see.

Last night at approx.7:30pm Race Officials were notified that a snow machine had made contact with Bailey Vitello’s team between Koyuk and Elim. We are extremely relieved that neither Bailey or his team were injured in the incident. Read more:
We have a good size cluster of mushers at the head of the race. Currently, in the lead is Jessie Royer, Brent Sass, and Thomas Waerner. In Kaltag, the first to arrive will receive the Bristol Bay Native Corporation Fish First Award of $2,000 in cash and 25 lbs of salmon.
Iditarod News: Dallas Seavey receives a 2-hour time penalization will added to his 24-hour layover, as per rule 34, it has been determined that the animal was not sufficiently gutted by the musher.

2023 Iditarod Champion, Ryan Redington, has been making his rounds throughout schools in Alaska. Last week he visited the Girdwood School, the small ski town just south of Anchorage where he bases his summer operations out of.

), of Nome/Nenana, Alaska, scratched at 11:00 a.m. today at the Unalakleet checkpoint, “to help promote the mental wellness and health of my team in the future.” Burmeister had 11 dogs in harness when he arrived in Unalakleet, all in good health.
The Iditarod remains extremely committed to doing all it can to assist in the search for Leon. On Sunday, March 20, the Iditarod Air Force flew musher Sebastien Dos Santos Borges and a four-legged teammate to Ruby to search for Leon.

), of Salt Lake City, Utah scratched at 2:25 p.m. today at the Nulato checkpoint. Teaford had 12 dogs in harness when he made the decision to scratch.
Nicolas Petit’s team has moved on to White Mountain and is no longer waiting in the cabin as we reported earlier today. There was a possibility Petit would follow the Elim mushers to Nome before we recieved news he had moved on. Petit scratched early Thursday morning.

Sled dogs run on such varied types of snow and ice that booties are used to prevent abrasions and snow clumps on paws. Think of how many booties any one musher racing Iditarod must go through and how much time it takes to put booties on a whole team.
