I’m probably a bit late for the trope map, but I’m about to jump into the #amquerying trenches with my THE UNTAMED x JUJUTSU KAISEN Queer, Asian YA Romantasy and I just want to tell you all what the book has. This book has Pretty Asian Boys in Kimono! And all this other stuff:

I want to share a bit about what it’s been like #amquerying a YA with a Japanese MC. My rejections all share a theme, agents love my concept, but they can’t connect with “The Voice.” What voice, you ask? The not-white, Japanese voice. 1/🧵

The problem is not with the books or the authors but with literary agents who solicit "diverse manuscripts" that they're not prepared to understand much less represent properly When faced with a book like that they tend to get out of their depth and blame the author

I’ve decided to part ways with my agent today. It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. I don’t know if or when I’ll be ready to jump back into the #amquerying trenches. But right now I could use a friend.

Going back to #amquerying after being agented feels different. I mean, the trenches look the same but I’m different. I’m older, wiser and I have a much stronger book than the one I queried with the first time. I can do this right? Right!

Querying has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life. Never before have I had to face this much gut wrenching disappointment. But just when I feel like I’m all alone in this, I turn around and see my #amquerying friends out here with me, fighting the good fight.

While in the query trenches it’s hard not to focus on the rejections, but I like to take a step back and realize I’ve done something extraordinary. I created something and I’m putting myself out there and going after a big dream. I think that makes me pretty cool. #amyquerying

A white author emailed me out of the blue, told me she wants to include more diversity in her stories and has some questions about how to write her AAPI characters. Her questions included how to describe “Asian-ness” and how to pick exotic names. Here’s my take on that 1/🧵

Ok yt agents, let's have a ♥️ to ♥️. These past few weeks has reminded us again of the lack of real support for BIPOC authors in this industry. If you consider yourself an agent who champions BIPOC voices, that’s great and all, but are you sure that’s not just lip service?🧵

We authors hold our stories so close to our hearts. There’s a vulnerability in sharing our work with the agents we query. Having my work leaked by someone who wasn’t even my agent has felt like a great violation of boundaries. I hope agents will ensure this never happens again.

That’s the problem with “yellow face” in publishing, for those who still don’t get it. By wrapping the white voice in the guise of an Asian story, you are rewriting the Asian and Asian-American identity to reflect a white voice, while erasing authentic voices.

Being a BIPOC author is no walk in the park. It’s a constant struggle to prove your worth, only to have your worth summed up in terms of marketability. It’s a constant reminder that I, being born as I am (not white), am not marketable. True BIPOC authors know what this feels like

That white girl voice is so engrained in YA, that anything that skews away from those expectations is dismissed as the wrong way to do it. “This voice doesn’t read YA”, “This voice is not there yet,” “I don’t connect with this voice.” It’s ethnocentrism in its purest form. 7/🧵

Back in the #AmQuerying trenches DAY 3. I've forgotten the #1 Law of Querying: Full Requests Will Always Mess With Your Head. That initial YAY? Yup, it's just 3.5 seconds away from becoming a panicked "Wait...but what if they read it and realize I suck?" 🤣😭

What brings me to Japan, you ask? To get my hands on a Tokyo Station Conductor Pikachu. Now my life is complete.

After everything that has happened I want to be here for the #WritingCommmunity now more than ever. If you need someone to look over your query letter or a second pair of eyes on your first 5 pages, my DM’s are open. I know how hard this industry is and I want you all to succeed.

I've shared enough times on here about being told my writing is "too asian." When fellow Asian-American authors share similar experiences, it always brings back the old sting. This industry is too comfortable with reminding Asian authors our asian-ness is not wanted or valued.

I’m beyond upset. Rejection on fulls happen. But when agents say they want to rep BIPOC voices, say they love the “uniqueness of my Roman/Chinese world”, but then find the Chinese terms confusing?? Don’t tell us you’re ready to support diversity without knowing what it means.

We are well aware that our cultures are not considered mainstream and we remain perpetual foreigners—difficult to connect with and to understand and to relate through the white, western lens. 4/🧵

Doesn’t matter how many times I’ve been to Japan, each time I come, I’m reminded of the majesty of this beautiful country and the elegance of this culture. I want to capture the magic of Japan on the pages of my stories and share it with the world.

Something exciting just dropped in my inbox 👀👀. Not publishing related but possibly...puppy related?

Rejections never stop stinging. A pass from an agent or editor vaguely telling me they don’t like my voice or didn’t love my pages always sends me spiraling endlessly. I doubt everything about my book and myself. This business is grueling. Authors really are strong. #amquerying

*ahem* #amquerying this UNTAMED x JUJUTSU KAISEN YA Queer Romantasy. 💔Reads like an epic wuxia C-Drama with an anime flair 💔After a spoiled prince gets Itadori Yuji-fied (you know what I mean) he finds himself caught in between 2 Exorcist ex-boyfriends—angst and drama ensues

Also, another note, writers...talk about your projects online if you're comfortable with it. I saw one of Jude's aesthetic posts & slid into her DM's. And the rest is history. You're working so hard on your stories, shout about it from the rooftops! You never know who is looking.

UPDATE: It’s been 2 Days and I haven’t checked my email once. Sometimes I think to myself, “oh but what if I get one of those ✨good✨ emails.” Then I have a good laugh and move on with my day.

I have now reached a point in my #amquerying journey where I no longer have the desire to check my inbox. This is the closest I’ll ever get to enlightenment, I think.

Others have sounded off on the latest “discussion” better than I could, so I’ll just say this: The struggles of BIPOC authors are not just in our heads. It’s exhausting to speak out, but we do it in the hopes it might bring awareness. If you try to talk over us, that’s personal.

My little kabuki book has been slogging along in sub purgatory for so long now I’m starting to fear that being known on twitter as the “‘oriental’, too Asian book,” might have been its one fleeting moment in the limelight. 🧵

We do it so that we may one day be seen not as some disconnected, unrelatable foreign thing, but as someone you can understand, relate to and see yourselves in.6/🧵

The future seems so uncertain right now, especially with my writing career. I don’t know where this book is gonna land or how my #amquerying journey is gonna turn out. The only thing I do know for certain about the future is I’m getting a puppy next month! That makes me happy

But more than that, I was appalled by the stories of Cardigan’s behavior that began come out as the day went on. Not only am I a BIPOC author, I am also Bisexual. I have spoken openly about the challenges marginalized authors face in this industry. 4/🧵

One fragile line BIPOC authors often have to walk is trying to distinguish fair feedback to feedback meant to put us and our stories in certain boxes the white narrative perceives we belong in. Asian characters existing in modern time is not a weakness. (Mini 🧵)

@TheEvaline It's telling that two agents cited the same weakness in your MS. Maybe that's something you can work on. I'd take that as good feedback.
