1/4 I am 1 of 3 Black women who coined the term
#IdentityPolitics
in the
#CombaheeRiverCollective
Statement, 1977.
@MeghanMcCain
does not know what she's talking about. What we meant was that Black women have the right to determine our own political agendas, period, full stop.
Meghan McCain: "We’ve only had one Asian American host co-host host this show. Does that mean one of us should be leaving because there’s not enough representation? We're talking about -- is identity politics more important than the qualifications for the job?"
You are correct! Identity politics as we defined it in 1977 had absolutely nothing to do with tokenism. Our focus was on liberation.
#BlackFeminismLives
#CombaheeTaughtMe
By identity politics we meant that Black women have a right to formulate our own political agendas based upon the material conditions we face as a result of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Unfortunately, the term has been maligned & distorted ever since.

📸 is a great way to start the day! This retreat for Boston members was on Cape Cod. We met & slept in a couple of rooms at a budget motel. Our 1st of 7 larger retreats bringing together women who did not live in Boston was in South Hadley & occurred later.

Wow! Thanks for the shout out
@TiffanyDCross
& for correcting the record.
#IdentityPolitics
is deeply rooted in an inclusive vision of social justice for ALL no matter what the haters say. I often say no one can help you to learn like a Black teacher & you are a great one.📚📺📝
Yes it's horrifying, but not surprising. It's even worse when folks on the left dismiss ID politics because their understanding of it comes from conservative sources. Everybody please read the Combahee Statement in
@KeeangaYamahtta
's book "How We Get Free."
@haymarketbooks
We were never separatists and worked with anyone with whom we shared political values & goals, not just those with whom we shared identical demographic identities. Unfortunately, identity politics has been misunderstood for decades.

We need to recognize that violence against women is a continuum. Vile, degrading language is on 1 end & battering, rape & murder are on the other. There are countless varieties of misogyny in between.
@AOC
's statement is a profile in courage.

In 1989, Paula Giddings,
@TheBarbaraSmith
,
@LorettaJRoss
, Byllye Avery, and Dorothy Pitman Hughes appeared together on The Phil Donahue Show to discuss Black women and feminism.
Of the show, Smith said, “this is history we’re experiencing today.”
Thank you! The Combahee River Collective Statement was co-authored by
@DemitaFrazier
, Beverly Smith and me in 1977, but it was not written at a retreat. We wrote it for
@ZEisenstein
book "Capitalist Patriarchy and the Case for Socialist Feminism."
Harriet Tubman wasn't just a conductor on the Underground Railroad, she was an armed scout & spy for the Union Army who helped lead a raid on Confederates in SC that freed hundreds of enslaved people. She fought for women's suffrage & founded a home for the elderly. 1/
My earlier essay "We Must Always Bury Our Dead Twice" describes
#JamesBaldwin
's funeral in 1987 where none of the Black literati mentioned that he was gay. It is in my book "The Truth That Never Hurts: Writings on Race, Gender, and Freedom."

First I knew of it. Y'all were subtle and sophisticated with the fangirling and very kind. It was a joy to meet

just shared Frederick Douglass's historic "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" (1852) that indicted the systemic racial injustice that plagues the U. S. to this day. Bro. Velshi can always be counted on to bring it!

Being Black is not a crime.
Being poor is not a crime.
Being hungry is not a crime.
Jordan Neely should be with us today. We need to fight for the world he deserved.

📷 of my mother Hilda Beatrice Smith 1922-1956. She died 66 years ago yesterday. Beverly & I were 9 years old. I've missed her every day since then. Her loss totally altered my life. It probably has a lot to do with why I'm so fiercely committed to Black women.
@andersoncooper
This is why a class analysis has to be equal to a race, sex and gender analysis. You don't have to be white to protect the interests of Western dominance, white supremacy, and genocide. It comes with the job.

Y'all, I am so excited to be on a panel with
@TheBarbaraSmith
next week to talk about lesbian publishing. We'll be joined by some other folks of course, but I know I'll spend most of my time grinning like a kid. 😍
