I'm so proud of my sister in astrochem! 🥳🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Jamila Pegues on becoming the first Black woman to receive a PhD in Astronomy from Harvard and the first Black woman Astrochemist receive a PhD in the US. 😭😭😭🥳🥳🥳

Congratulations to Dr.
@GoAstroMo
!!! She is NOW the 24th Black woman to receive a PhD in Astronomy and the FIRST BLACK woman to receive a PhD in Astronomy from Columbia University! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉💐💐💐
Dear White Professors: Do NOT tell your students of color that they cannot survive in graduate school!!! That is NOT your call. The call is on the student and their experience. Your job is support students. If you cannot do, that then academia is NOT for you!
Congratulations to Dr. Samaiyah Farid!!!!! Today, she successfully defended her PhD in Astronomy. This makes her the 22nd African American woman to receive a PhD in Astronomy.!!!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Hey! My name is Ashley! I'm an Atmospheric Scientist. I study the chemistry of planetary atmospheres specifically of Titan. I've studied Titan's prebiotic chemistry and ice cloud chemistry in the stratosphere using spectroscopy!

This school year, we will be graduating at least 10 Black women with PhDs in Physics and Astronomy in the US. 🙌🏽🙌🏽 A few of them becoming the FIRSTS in their respective departments.
I'm thrilled to share that my proposal won the NASA FINESST fellowship!! 🩵❄️🧊🩵❄️🧊
A special thanks to both of my advisors and all of my collaborators! 🙏🏽🩵🧊❄️
People like this used to try to make me feel bad. I've done internships at Harvard & Johns Hopkins. I'll receiving my degree at 31. I'll also be the FIRST person at my school to become an astrochemist & one of few Black women in the US to study this new field for graduate school.
I'm still in shock that I'm going to be a PhD student this fall. 😭🥺I'm so grateful for all the connections that I made this round & my amazing friends that are helping me. 🥺😍
As the 25th Black woman to earn a PhD in Astronomy in the US is loading (she defends in a couple of days), let this be a reminder that YOU ALL have way too much work to do!
We don't want to hear how shocking this is, it shouldn't be if you look around your departments.
Today marks the beginning of
#BlackHistoryMonth
. All of February, we will be highlighting the many inspirational voices & stories of African Americans who have helped shape America’s space program. Get to know them & their invaluable contributions:
So last night I got the Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering Departmental Leadership Award!!! Although I was upset that they printed and ANNOUNCED it as Biological Sciences Leadership award! Nevertheless, I'm grateful that my department recognizes all the work that I do. 😊
White folks in academia needs to start realizing and taking ownership when they fail Black students. I don't mean in coursework but I mean guidance/advisorship. (A Thread)
Why is that EVERYTIME there's a major event centered around the awareness Blackness and what we go through as Black people, white women come with this

train? WW have HISTORICAL record of DOING this! Let's be clear it's MORE WW in academic spaces than it is BP.
Congratulations to Dr. Erin Flowers on becoming the 25th Black woman to earn a PhD in Astronomy in the US. She is also the third Black woman to earn a PhD in the Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University!

Yo! My name is Ashley. I'm an incoming PhD student in Atmospheric Science at Howard University. I received my BS in Chemistry from
@ChicagoState
. I've interned at Harvard, Johns Hopkins & NASA studying the astrochemistry in our solar system.
It's a official: I am a doctor now! 😭😭😭😭😂😂😂😂😂🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️That's what have been called so I am a doctor. Speaking this into existence again!🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾❤❤❤❤😍😍😍

FIRST Astrochemist at Chicago State (me), FIRST Black woman to receive a PhD in Astrophysics at UC Berkeley (Dr. Nia Imara), and FIRST Black woman to receive a B.S. in Astrophysics at University of Wisconsin (Ms. Miona Short).

@HowardU
where I study the atmospheric processes & evolution of Ice Giant atmospheres. My set is physical chem! 💙🧊❄️
2016: Was unsure about my academic future because of the SSA error after my father's death & was expected to intern at Harvard.
2021: With the community's help, I was able to stay in school, graduate, run a community for Black space enthusiasts, & now a PhD student.
2016: Defended my PhD, moved to a new city to start my postdoc, got married, worried about jobs
2021: Moved to a new city to start a permanent position, bought a house, worried about COVID
Both were big eventful years!

Okay....but she was talking about being a Black woman. You still have white privilege so this conversation has NOTHING to do with you.
Is that Black and brown students need bridge programs or is that folks really don't understand the concept of advising historically excluded people, holding themselves/colleagues accountable, and this is a way to make themselves feel better about it?
Thank you so much for the well wishes and the prayers for my uncle and family. My uncle passed away this morning due to complications from coronavirus.
Hey!! My name is Ashley. I'm
#BlackandSTEM
and I'm one of the

during this amazing

.
I study astronomy through the eyes of a chemist. I specialize in planet formation, planetary atmospheres, and ice chemistry. I'm also a science communicator.
Fun fact: Did you know that ALL 6 of the FIRST African American women Astrochemists to receive PhDs this decade are ALL from the Midwest? 🤷🏽♀️ It's a Midwest thang!

Coronavirus just really took my uncle. The one that was supposed to walk me down the aisle after my father died in 2016!?!
My uncle was the DJ for my Harvard REU party?!? (He was called DJ Sheet Shaker)🕊️🕊️❤️❤️
I hope my uncle is taking care of himself in the next lifetime. ❤️
We're joining the
@WhiteHouse
National Space Council to kick off Black Space Week 2024.
Hear from astronauts, innovators, policymakers, and more to celebrate the contributions of Black Americans to space exploration.
Congratulations to Dr. Farrah Simpson
@farsimpson
on a successful defense! This makes her the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Physics from Brown University.

is when your content/work is stolen for a *white* women in physics conference and then being denied from being able to attend.
I want my reparations.
This week was a rough week for my family. We mourn the loss of my little cousin who passed away at the very young age of 17.
If you have teenage drivers, please tell them to be careful.
The same academics that were unfollowing me because I've always spoke out on the treatment of Black students are talking about how they care about the lives of Black folks.🙃
If anyone knows me, they know it's not like me cancel. Today, I had to cancel a scheduled talk that I had been looking forward to giving.
My family is going through a hardship at this moment. My heart is heavy and sad. I'll reappear sometime soon. ❤️
so so so proud of my badass brilliant beautiful amazing friend
@jacqdanso
for successfully defending her PhD today!!!
Dr Antwi-Danso has arrivedddddd 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I can't believe that I am writing this. Rest in Peace
@astro__jose
! I remember when we would chat about your 1st year of grad school and I told you that you could do it! The day that I FIRST met you and was cracking jokes. Astronomy has gained a legend!
2020 saw NASA's first ever all-virtual internship. However, working from home didn't dampen these students' enthusiasm or keep them from feeling like part of their teams.
