SEASON PREMIERE: WE'RE BACK AT IT ONCE AGAIN, kicking off the premiere of the eighth season of the podcast with Seth MacFarlane/Frank Ocean! We've got a late period bangers from Bill Hader, Gangnam Style (with Psy cameo), Honey Boo Boo and more!
LISTEN:
RIP Martin Mull. Truly one the finest comedic minds to ever grace this world. Please, please watch his HBO special, History of White People In America. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life.
4 years ago, on March 7 2020. The last episode of S45 produced in studio before the pandemic forced them to finish out the season with the At Home episodes. It’s biggest legacy, though, would be this small, seemingly innocuous moment from Daniel Craig:
Revisiting the Nate Bargatze episode tonight for the podcast and I still can’t get over just how *clean and efficient* this one is. Just some truly masterclass sketch writing.
48 years ago, on Dec. 13, 1975, the Word Association sketch was unleashed upon the world. Written by Paul Mooney, Richard Pryor and Chevy Chase, it still remains one of the most defining moments of not only SNL but televised comedy in general.
Truly there is nothing in this cold, bleak world that gives me more pleasure than seeing a 70-ish year old Jim Downey being used as a meme, iterating on a joke foundation he created mere months ago. I love to see respects paid to the Masters.

, Jan. 18, 1986. Host: Harry Dean Stanton. Musical guest: The Replacements. Quite possibly the booziest episode ever, as both Harry and The Replacements spent most of the day drinking together. After these performances, The Replacements would be "banned" from SNL.
#OnThisDay
, April 22, 1977. Host: Steve Martin. MG: The Blues Brothers. Often cited as the best episode of the show ever and it’s hard to not to agree. You’ve got King Tut, Festrunk Brothers, Dancing in the Dark, The Nerds…even the lesser known sketches are great. S-tier SNL.
14 years ago. May 8, 2010. With the backing of a surprisingly successful Facebook campaign, Betty White became, at 88, the oldest person to host the show. And she crushed it.
Few know that Jazz legend David Sanborn was actually part of the SNL house band during S5 and was given a spotlight in the 100th episode to perform the song "Anything You Want". RIP.
RIP Richard Belzer. Belz was SNL's original warmup act before the show and at one time was considered for a spot in the cast. It never materialized but Richard can be found in the background of many an original era episode, did a standup spot and, in particular, this cold open.
As much as it really baffles me that they cut Chloe Troast, it is heartening to see so many other people bemoan the loss as well. It’s a nice reminder that there’s still some folks out there with decent taste watching the show. Onwards and upwards, Chloe!

, October 1st, 2005, the 31st season of
#SNL
would premiere with host Steve Carell and musical guest Kanye West. It would be the first episode for Bill Hader & Andy Samberg, the first transmitted in HD and also some guy named Colin Jost joined the writing staff.
#OnThisDay
, Jan. 11, 1992. Host Rob Morrow/Musical guest Nirvana. Only a few months after Smells Like Teen Spirit fully drug us kicking and screaming into the 90s, Nirvana played on SNL for the first time. It would begin a long legacy between the show and Dave Grohl.
Every SNL fan has a different take on the show but I think the one thing we can ALL truly agree on is that having Elon Musk host the show is one of the most absolute dumbest f**king things they’ve ever done.
@nbcsnl
@elonmusk
@MileyCyrus
Cancel this episode now. Just delete the post, say it was a funny joke, have Miley do double duty and never entertain an idea so horrendously stupid again.
32 years ago, Nirvana released Smells Like Teen Spirit. A few months later, on January 11th 1992, the band would take to the SNL stages to play it. The 90s had truly begun.
R.I.P. Buck Henry. Buck hosted 10 times during the show’s first initial five years and was the kind of guy who could get accidentally sliced in the head by Belushi’s sword, finish the sketch by jumping out a windows and still carry on with the rest of the show. Truly incredible.
37 years ago, on Jan. 18, 1986, Harry Dean Stanton and The Replacements gave us quite possibly the booziest episode ever. The Replacements spent most of the day drinking together with Harry & after these performances, the ‘Mats would be "banned" from SNL.
Truly gutted to hear the passing of sketch comedy legend, Joe Flaherty. Undeniably the “glue” of the SCTV cast and someone you were always overjoyed see pop up in whatever you were watching. RIP King. You will be missed.
26 years ago, on May 28, 1998, we lost Phil Hartman. Without a doubt, the absolute best to ever do it. I still get choked up thinking about what could have been but my god, am I glad we had him for as long as we did.
8 years ago, on Feb. 6. 2016, Larry David hosted for the first time. Here’s some footage of him trying (and failing) to get through the FBI Simulator sketch during rehearsals.
38 years ago. March 15, 1986. Upset with his minimal screen time as a featured player, Damon Wayans suddenly decided, live on air, to add a little Men on Film flair to a character that was not written or rehearsed that way. It would be his last episode.
The "Big Ear Family" gag was writer Jon Vitti's way of criticizing Saturday Night Live for having overlong sketches with thin joke premises. He was a writer on
#SNL
during the 1985–86 season along with fellow Simpsons writers, George Meyer and John Swartzwelder. (

This is insane. Something I’ve been hoping for since Ego was hired is *finally* happening: Carl Tart is joining the writing staff. I’m expecting great things because the comedic alchemy between those two is off the charts. Finally…some good SNL news.
41 years ago, on Dec. 11, 1982, Eddie Murphy became the first and - still to this day - only cast member to host the show while STILL IN THE CAST. Also notable is the sole appearance of Steve Martin in the Ebersol years.
Absolutely gutted to hear about the passing of Tommy Smothers, one of the funniest people to have ever existed, bar none. And that voice! And the Yo-Yos! RIP King. So glad we were blessed with your joy.
37 years ago, on Oct. 11, 1986, the 12th season of
#SNL
began. It was first episode for Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Kevin Nealon, Dana Carvey and Victoria Jackson. The second golden age had begun.
#OnThisDay
, Feb. 28, 1998, Garth Brooks hosts
#SNL
for the first of, sadly, only two times. A sketch that probably best illustrates his shocking ease at sketch comedy is “Old French Whore”, written by a fresh new writing room hire named Tina Fey.
26 years ago, on Oct. 25 1997, Chris Farley hosted
#SNL
for the first and only time. Despite concerns over his health, the show went forward as planned. It would be Chris’ final television appearance before his passing less than two months later.
40 years ago. June 8, 1984. Ghostbusters hits theaters. Before the film officially came out, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray cut a promo for Las Vegas film distributors.
#OnThisDay
, Oct. 31, 1981. Host Donald Pleasance and musical guest FEAR. Truly one of the wildest moments of the show’s history, allowing one of the most caustic and chaotic LA punk bands on network television…until, finally, had to cut away.
Listen…I’m a diehard fan of this show. And now that we’ve closed the book on S49, I can safely say that we need a nearly top to bottom restructuring and rethinking of this show if feels like it WANTS to survive after S50.
#SNL
39 years ago, on Dec. 15, 1984, Eddie Murphy returned to host the show, which would result in the beloved White Like Me sketch. Written by Andy Breckman, this also happens to include my all-time favorite Jim Downey performance. It’s just beautiful.
Or, hear me out, we give it to a cast member whose job it is to do these things. It’s a crazy idea, I know, but this is just one of *many* renegade theories I have about this show.
Well,
#SNL
finishes out a surprisingly strong block of episodes with a STRONG Christmas outing. Butler was an outrageously committed host and the show seems to be finally figuring out its performance-driven chaos. Glorious send-off to Cecily. Best of the season. 4.5/5
What’s really bizarre about this season is that, after years of steadily growing in popularity & finally scoring a big hit with Lisa From Temecula, Ego has now been regulated to mostly sitting silently on couches, watching as the sketch bombs around her.
Well, I was kinda hoping that
#SNL
would just kinda sidestep the Israel/Palestine thing because I didn’t just think the show could navigate it properly…but that was generally a pretty classy way to go about it, all in all.
Always down for more cameos from the absolute legend that is Akira “Leo” Yoshimura. This man has literally worked on the show for more years than Lorne.
#SNL
First Punkie and now Molly. What a bummer. I swear to god, if these two (and who knows who else) get cut but I have to deal with the 23rd year of a Jost & Che Weekend Update, I’m going to scream.
During S38, Bill Hader was still on the fence on if he was going to leave the show that year...then Justin Beiber hosted and that sealed the deal. I wonder how many current cast members are having that moment right now.
34 years ago, on Feb. 17, 1990, Tom Hanks hosted the show for the 4th time (with musical guest Aerosmith)! It would be Mike Meyer’s first episode as a repertory cast member and he would celebrate it with one of the most iconic Wayne’s World sketches ever.
#OnThisDay
April 24, 1976 Host: Raquel Welch. MG: Phoebe Snow. Lorne Michaels went on air to ask the Beatles to reform on SNL for the princely sum of $3,000. Paul and John were actually in NYC that night and nearly came down to the studio as a joke.
Apparently, Pete is a no-show *again* tonight. Crazy to think that Jon Lovitz and Taran Killam would be basically fired for needing a few weeks off for overlong movie schedules and now...this whole thing with Pete. It seems a tad wrong, at least in a historical sense.
#SNL
It's been so long that this show has had truly incredible performances that i forgot what it was like to give bonus points to the music guest in a modern episode.
#SNL
This is still probably my favorite single frame from SNL. The amount of emotions Phil manages to pack into this one quick reaction shot is just a perfect encapsulation of why no one will ever do it better.
#OnThisDay
, Nov. 1, 2008. Host Ben Affleck, musical guest David Cook. A new character is introduced late into the episode: Stefon, in a rare sketch appearance! He wouldn’t reappear again until April 24, 2010 as an Update correspondent, which is where he would (more or less) stay.
26 years ago, on Feb. 28, 1998, Garth Brooks hosted
#SNL
for the first of, sadly, only two times. A sketch that probably best illustrates his shocking ease at sketch comedy is “Old French Whore”, written by a fresh new writing room hire named Tina Fey.
12 Years Ago. September 15, 2012. Premiere of S38 with Seth MacFarlane and Frank Ocean. It's the start of Bill Hader's final season and he kicks it off with a late-period classic. Ladies and gentlemen: Anthony Peter Colman and Tony.
48 years ago. April 24, 1976. Lorne Michaels goes on air to ask the Beatles to reform on SNL for the princely sum of $3,000. Paul and John were actually in NYC that night and very nearly came down to the studio as a joke.
