selected my proposal for the McGraw Fellowships for Business Journalism. I look forward to reporting on the impact of prison payments & communications companies on prisoners & their loved ones.
I can't prove it, but I've felt like these layoffs are coordinated. Not because execs are actually worried about a recession, but because they want to scare workers into accepting low wages & poor working conditions again.

Good morning,
Hiring journalists of color to do one or two stories regarding a source of color or subject that impacts people of color and then not commissioning that journalist again isn’t inclusion. That’s using them to look good & discarding them afterwards.
Rich people will deploy their resources to preserve themselves and their interests at the expense of everyone else, and this is why they need to be taxed until billionaires no longer exist. This is theft of land & money that belongs to the public.
Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly building a massive $100 million compound in Hawaii with an underground bunker, escape hatch, and a “blast-resistant door.”
The 5,000-square-foot underground bunker will be self-sufficient with its own energy, food, and water supply,

reports.
With $18 million, "The Color Purple" had the largest Christmas Day opening for a film since 2009, and the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time.
This week has made it very clear that we gotta make media literacy and media ethics a priority going forward. Too much unverified information is spreading too quickly, and too many people are falling for it.
I'm begging reporters covering the declining birthrate to interview feminist scholars. Much of the coverage focuses on the tax policy, the election, & the rising cost of living generally. But there's very little focus on the lack of suitable partners & the threat of misogyny.
Remote work risks wiping $800 billion from the value of office buildings in major cities worldwide by 2030 as the post-pandemic trend pushes up office vacancy rates and drives down rents, according to a new report
This is the part that they miss. Media executives don't want to invest in quality journalism, but journalism is what brings people to your site in the first place. The style that you have, the narratives you unearth that other newsrooms can't, that's what drives the business.
Newsroom execs, who are mostly white & male, have a huge problem with their diversifying workplaces. They don't want to listen to their staff, who interview sources & do research, because that reporting & lived experience contradicts their conservativism
Too many execs complained about workers not wanting to work anymore or not wanting to work in the office for this all to be in response to ✌🏼 the recession ✌🏼🙃
It's worth noting that Wells Fargo has had a long, well-documented history of discriminating against its customers of color. I'm always skeptical when I hear banks making these kinds of pledges. Follow up in a year or so and see where the money went.
You don't need to ask why American journalism is broken when major media companies pay $300,000 per year contracts for opinion voices like Ronna McDaniel and $200 per article for fact-based freelance journalism.
The press does not extend this grace to Black people accused of a crime. Y'all will demonize poor people for shoplifting, plastering their mugshot for all to see. But this woman, who knowingly gave wrong medical information to people, is totally worth redemption.
It's violence. Black people are told everyday that they don't deserve education, housing, clean water, clean air, employment, rest, joy, peace, or life at all. A large share of Americans think Black people's civil rights are merely privileges.
Imagine being the only Black person in a multiple college classes and being told that you and people that look like you don’t deserve to be there and that you stole someone’s seat. That’s incredibly offensive.
One thing I've never liked about this profession is how Black journalists specifically & journalists of marginalized backgrounds broadly are expected to/praised for being able to keep our cool in the face of disrespect.

Years ago, I wrote about the difficulty Black founders face when seeking bank loans and venture capital funding despite their qualifications. And yet, white entrepreneurs are failing up left and right.
I'm sick of opening this app to see another batch of journalists losing their jobs. You're not trimming fat. Your cutting into muscle & bone. We need more people in this industry.
Having read this piece and digested it a bit, I keep asking 1 question: if men say they want to be dads, why aren't they questioned about the sacrifices they're willing to make to be good dads? Your job? Your money? Your freedom? Moms are expected to sacrifice all of this & more
I do not understand the constant insistence that it is women talking about their gendered problems, not the problems themselves, which is a social emergency that needs to be remedied.
@judysquirrels
They absolutely do, which is why women don't feel comfortable coming forward with negative dating experiences. Place the blame where it belongs
Wow, there's a lot to unpack here. The main takeaway, though, is that white women are perfectly fine with giving white supremacists a chance. And through doing so, they uphold the system.
Whenever I point out that these "competitive rates" are actually terrible & should be increased, there's always someone saying, "Good luck with that. It's unreasonable." Our pay should increase over time. These media execs wouldn't be profiting from our work if it was worthless.
There will be no “return to the office” unless workers are safe. Even then, you’ll probably lose workers seeking flexibility to companies that aren’t so rigid. Also, why don’t the CEOs ever talk about fixing the ventilation, so workers can avoid catching colds, COVID-19, etc.
Can CEOs claw their way back to 2019?
Some corporate leaders, including Elon Musk, are grasping at whatever they can to get back to the way things were before the pandemic. But they might find themselves fighting a culture shift beyond their control.
@MrErnestOwens
Drake didn’t just give R. Kelly a songwriting credit on “TSU.” The song’s production samples Kelly’s “Half on a Baby,” and so he automatically is entitled to a writing credit on the track. (At present, Kelly still owns his publishing and can’t find a buyer for it.)
I'm once again asking news organizations to send reporters of color from low-income backgrounds to cover the White House. Y'all think this shit is a game & it's not. You're so disconnected from the experience of ordinary Americans & it shows. Do better.
@yrfatfriend
Ah, the old, "[Insert marginalized group] is shoving [dismantling oppressive systems and customs] down our throats" trope. Does your back hurt from upholding fatphobia for decades?
Be real: if your Black coworkers had a "temper tantrum" like this, you'd fire them & call the police. Younger people don't want to be in the newsroom because they can actually get some work done without the theatrics & distractions from their peers
@NotLaja
That's why I'm skeptical of people prompting crypto as financially inclusive. Besides the hurdles to access crypto, there are other ways of making money mgmt inclusive: starting with free housing, home internet, mobile/desktop tech & bank accounts for unhoused & low-income people
Meg said she didn't want everyone, including herself, to be shot by the police because Tory had a weapon. She was protecting herself and her friend just as much as Tory. That says a lot about policing's inability to protect women from violence.
This episode is so critical. News execs love to opine about objectivity, but they've fired or blackballed reporters for telling the truth about the Palestinian genocide. An essential journalistic ethic is to determine who's in power & who is oppressed & explain that context.
In this News Brief, "Quantifying the Media's Selective Humanity in Gaza," we are joined by Adam's anonymous co-author of their two recent studies—one of print and one of cable news—detailing US's media's double standards when covering the 'Gaza conflict.'

Essence Magazine is based in New York City, which means it has to comply with the Freelance Isn't Free Act:
If they're not paying you on time, they could be breaking the law and subject to penalties. Hopefully, it won't come to that.
But that would require perceiving our skills to be equal to straight white men. For whatever reason, diverse journalists are seen as not-quite-qualified applicants who need extra training before they're hirable, but straight white journalists are allowed to learn on the job.
What really bothers me about my industry is that it claims to prioritize DEI, but those values aren't reflected in the treatment, pay and working conditions for journalists of marginalized backgrounds & it's truly exhausting. I don't blame journos for leaving for greener pastures
@serenamaria36
Every time I think about that story, it pisses me off. Nevermind that a. he should've been paid enough to afford a car on his own or b. we should be investing in public transit like most major cities, so that no one has to endure that. The press walked right past the point.

Your grandmas, your aunties, your sisters, your nieces, your daughters... The abuse happened then, and it's still happening now. Address the abusers, not the stories that acknowledge the pain.
“she wrote Color Purple cause she hate BM” meanwhile the focus should be lived experiences of BW that inspired the story.
Currently, a BW or girl gets killed every 6hrs & are more likely to experience SA. You think violence against BW came outta thin air? Talk to your grandmas.

One of the things that makes Biden's unwillingness to cancel student loan debt so heinous is that he was one of the senators who voted in favor of making student loan debt harder to discharge through bankruptcy.
I could be paranoid, but I’d be deeply concerned about Apple charging patients more, because they didn’t go to the doctor when an app told them to & thus making their illness worse & more expensive. Until we make healthcare free, people will delay medical visits they can’t afford
Those of us who come from low-income families & whose parents and grandparents performed manual labor aren't fine with this. I've previously written about the retirement crisis facing women of color for

Yesterday, I lost an auntie to COVID-19. I'm going to miss her, and I'm worried about the rest of my family in Detroit. I've been crying. I've been working. I'm in a haze of grief and deep, seething rage.
What depresses me about watching James Baldwin's clips is that they ring so true today. It's as though we are on a loop, forever articulating why we deserve equality.
Born in Harlem, novelist, playwright, poet, and activist James Baldwin is considered one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
His passion for writing developed young and his first article was published in 1937 when he was only 13-years-old.
@MoiraDonegan
The accuracy of this tweet... My grandma literally told me multiple times growing up to get my education & make my own money, so I don't have to depend on a man for anything.
You can't hire a handful of reporters of color to cover race. Racism permeates every element of American life. It must be woven into the fabric of every beat. Climate change, housing, business, finance, government, criminal justice, arts, food... Name a beat without racism in it.
Femicide, childcare costs, the gender pay gap, healthcare costs, childbirth deaths/complications, the expectation that the birthing parent do most of the childrearing, the blow to career advancement, the possibility of being abandoned—none of this makes parenthood more appealing
The fact that Detroit is so Black but its media ecosystem is overwhelming white is deliberate. There are so many universities/high schools to recruit from for entry-level jobs & internships. Are you working with NABJ? Are you cultivating talent from within? Do more. Do better.
One thing I think about a lot is how millennials were repeatedly called lazy despite the fact that many of us were working side hustles to support ourselves and help our parents. Many parents regard their children as their retirement plan, which is a failure of the state imho.
I think if you really knew how your parents were doing financially you would be shocked at how they’ve been able to keep it together for so long. It might be worth having this conversation sooner than you think.
The fact that this election was this close for this long lets you know what time it is. It will be an uphill battle. And all the obstacles that marginalized people have faced will not suddenly be washed away.
The future of work is never something useful like universal paid vacation or family leave. It’s always another headset thing or glasses that I’m gonna play with for a week and then set aside.

People who say stuff like this want BW to be quiet about our mental health woes. She misses her parents, had issues with her label, was shot, was cheated on, lost friends... She's allowed to express herself. But y'all expect Black women to be punching bags who don't fight back.
I don't think some people realize how often rappers have talked about depression, anxiety and s*icide in hip hop songs. There's a long history of it. Some of these songs still get played because they are classics...
I don't wanna be the main character on any app, but I really don't want to be the main character in TikTok. There's something uniquely ruthless about that app.

Yet another reason why MI needs public transit. Not everyone can drive in this weather. Having access to buses & trains that can get you around the city cheaply & reliably would probably save lives.

I'll keep saying this: diversity is necessary for the news industry to stay alive as the country continues to change demographically. If you want to keep these institutions alive, you have to be willing to evolve as the times change.

Former Bad Boys rapper

took to social media to call out Diddy for trying to give him back his publishing instead of simply paying him for it. Thoughts?
On a related note: this is why I hate when politicians focus so much on the middle class. We need to focus on POOR PEOPLE first. People who are unhoused, hungry & forgotten. No one should be in this situation in the first place. We have to ensure that everyone has the basics.
A video online appears to show a passenger strangling 30-year-old Jordan Neely to death on the NYC subway

It’s embarrassing that a legacy publication dedicated to Black women didn’t post daily coverage of the trial. A meme after the fact for engagement? SMH. Taking a “let’s wait and see” approach to this case is the opposite of believing and protecting Black women. We see you.

I wouldn't have the portfolio or networks I have now if I stayed in the newsroom. Y'all know you treat young people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, like mules or weirdos rather than people. You're nostalgic for workplace abuse & we're over it.
