Rusty, Ebby and Lexie bringing stocker cattle to me this afternoon. They went over a 1/2 mile to find them and brought them to me. The wind was blowing as usual so I cut the sound.

I must say that the outpouring of thoughts and prayers from so many folks on this platform has been overwhelming to say the least. Thank you everyone ever so much! 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
The last sunrise of 23 presented itself in spectacular fashion. In spite of all the uncertainty in the world may you take solace in the beauty of God’s creation. I hope that sharing this fleeting scene lightens your heart if ever so briefly. Wishing you the very best in 2024!
The foster Mom has claimed the twin bull calf as hers. The surest sign is the way she is talking to it. She has been letting it nurse unrestrained but didn’t start talking to it until last night. They can now be turned out with the rest of the herd.
This morning’s new addition. I approached 207E’s new calf cautiously, I approach all new calves cautiously but a bit more with her, needless to say, fortunately she was very tolerant as I banded and tagged her new calf.

The wind was blowing this morning but no blades turning on any of them. Supposedly green energy is going to save us from a climactic Armageddon, it just won’t keep us from feeezing to death though. 🤣🤣
A big grass fire northeast of us today, help showed up from all over. This herd of 400 plus yearling were right in line. They got moved just in time, the fire burned through right behind them. Thanks to the rapid response from all over the yard was saved and the fire controlled
The last 4 years have been taxing, the massive fear campaign and now the constant psychological barrage of the sky is falling “news” makes it challenging to shrug it all off. I find solace in the manifest beauty of Gods creation. I hope my sharing lightens your load also.
It’s not often I see cows give birth standing and I don’t recall ever seeing a first calving 2 yr old heifer give birth while standing but as the old saying there is a first time for everything. I was bemoaning she wouldn’t lay down and push, didn’t need to I guess. 🙂
Old 36Z, an 11 yr old Angus cow, somewhat similar to 88 in girth but different. The distension isn’t symmetrical and not as full up high especially on her right side. The front side of her right hip bone is visible because of the hollow under her short ribs. Full but normal.
If I squint hard enough I think I can see a tinge of green. We received a little reminder, 3/10ths, that water can actually fall from the sky, hopefully we get another reminder soon.
11 lbs homemade butter ready to go in the freezer. Another ~4 lbs ready to wash and then after the butter milk is washed out.

Homemade use to be the norm, it has all been outsourced to corporations, convenience is now king.
The hard pan flats have water! We can go years without standing water and then it rains and the boreal chorus frogs appear overnight and start singing. In spots miles from any water body they appear, obviously just patiently waiting down in the ground until it rains.

Loading the second bull to replace some injured bulls. There are many reasons to take your time while handling bulls. Calm bulls are safer that is certain. Also calm bulls don’t typically create as many fencing jobs.

First nursing for a twin calf that we are grafting onto a foster cow. The calf was trying to nurse the cow free standing but she wasn’t having it so we restrained her. If there’s ever a question about whether a calf is getting milk the wagging tail says yes.
Getting a few questions re why we keep horned cows. We have kept a few horned cows in our herd for at least 45 yrs, Longhorn, Jersey and Tarentaise, and crosses there of, no regrets, issues or problems as of yet and I like the looks of them.

shining in the evening light yesterday evening. The clouds were quite something all yesterday, they started to break up a bit in the afternoon so I took my canon out anticipating the possibility of the golden hour lowlight dark cloud contrast.
We were finally blessed with a good shot of rain Wed night and Thursday, up to 3 inches in the middle of the ranch. I don’t recall the last time we received that amount in one shot. The back road allowance yesterday. Hopefully it keeps coming.
Sent the younger dos to retrieve this steer the just antagonized him and drove him farther away. The old man Rusty went the distance and brought the steer slow and steady.
The reluctant wet nurse decided she could tolerate the calves this morning. The smaller calf, a bull, took on a belly full very quickly and was temporarily milk drunk. 😂
We calve our herd in May and June, have since the early 90’s, to avoid winter weather. It froze here this morning and there is a 35 kph wind out of the northwest. Buckbrush prides calves good shelter from the wind.
Summer is here. The forecast high temp 21°C (70°F), the Goldilocks temp for me. A cool
spring and summer so far which doesn’t bother me.

Blynx taking a bite and Ebby and Rusty a breather.
Taking a mature bull, 6 yrs old, who isn’t successfully serving cows out of the herd this morning. Taking the time to train him to drive and load over the years paid off this morning. He wasn’t keen to leave but he eventually relented and walked to the trailer and got on.
Can you imagine being that stupid to think that something as natural as a cow is a liability to the natural world, or being that evil to blame something as beautiful and valuable to human well being as a cow, for the rumination of the planet to justify more theft by taxation?

An awkward sucker. He was born this morning and an hour 1/2 later he still hadn’t nursed. Walked the Mom and calf in and as luck would have it the heifer was quiet enough that I was able to get him latched on a hind teat without having to restrain her.
These bulls have over a 100s of acres in which to sort out their differences but apparently still not enough to avoid tearing down fences. 🥴 Reminds me of the old western movies, “this town ain’t big enough for the both of us, I’m gonna give you 24 hrs to get out”. 😂😂
