Honored to be the founder and president of Harvard’s Saudi Student Association
We’re proud to announce to formation of Harvard’s first official Saudi Student Association

Hard truth:
9 times out of 10
• What you work on
• Who you work with
• Your work’s relevance to society
are more important than how hard you work
Direction beats intensity

A lot of people are good at solving problems (skills), but few are good at choosing which ones to solve (direction)
Students are trained their whole lives to jump through predefined hoops. They spend 10-15 years solving problems others set for them.
Choose your own hoops

@NouraAlKaabi
Best way to learn: Have a stake in the outcome
1. To learn about a concept, write/publish about it
2. To learn about cooking, prepare a meal for family/friends
3. To learn about stocks, start investing
Risk sparks understanding

Here’s a short clip where I shed some light on the youth-globalization link:
Architecture is beyond important.
The aesthetics of a home, school, or workplace make a huge difference in mood, productivity, self-perception etc.
Especially when working from home, never underestimate the impact of surrounding aesthetics
Munger's Law:
• Never allow yourself to hold or endorse an opinion on a subject unless you can state the opposing argument better than the opposition can
By far the most useful test of comprehension clarity
Sometimes the inverse can be just as strong as the absolute:
1. Silence as strong as talking
2. Absence as strong as presence
3. Solitude as strong as company

Take pride in things that can only be earned - not bought - over time:
- Personal & professional reputation
- Deep, meaningful social ties
- A fit body
- Inner peace
- Healthy family
- Mental resilience & well-being
- Outcome independence
Give yourself direction and commit to it
But also give yourself multiple lanes to head in that direction - to swerve, grow, and explore different paths to the same destination
Strict on the end, but flexible with the means
The art of rhetoric is underrated. For example:
1. "Please sign this contract" vs. "Would you like to put your acknowledgement on this agreement"
2. "Do you want to buy that now?" vs. "Would you like to get started with that investment?"
Phrasing is everything
Success, wealth, and happiness are radically subjective
yet society seems to continually impose objective definitions
losing focus of the subjective for a false objective is at the root of a lot of unhappiness today.
Define, then act to attain.
Expectations make us more attached to an outcome than the process, when in reality, the quality of the process determines the outcome
Rather than triggering expectations, the best work/fun organically transcends them
As part of my senior thesis on Saudi youth empowerment, I surveyed <1000 Saudis (~60% male, ~40% female) on their opinions re societal transformation & the ongoing generational shift in KSA. I present some key findings in my article with
@GlobPeaceIndex
We live in a world of information overload - this book explains how to simplify complexity, and separate fact from fiction
If you’re a skeptic like me, this is a must-read
One of the best books on critical thinking & decision-making I ever came across👍🏻
Big ups to my brother
@rioferdy5
for calling out punditry that reeks of hypocrisy.
This form of hypocrisy is not a byproduct of genuine care for the beautiful game that has given us so much to celebrate. It is the byproduct of willful ignorance. Disgraceful
In 2021, be more selective with what you consume.
Information is everywhere - what we expose ourselves to is more consequential than we'd like to think
Schopenhauer on the art of NOT reading everything you come across:
If nothing else, 2021 is teaching us the power of optionality.
We think about planning as linear and controlled, but evidently that's not how the world around us works anymore
The world today is dominated by nonlinearities, so understanding options value is far more important
“Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder.”
- Henry David Thoreau
One of the best pieces I came across this year:
Five Lessons From History: Big takeaways about how, and why, people do what they do.
- Must read for anyone who believes history helps us understand the present/anticipate the future

“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” — Marcus Aurelius
Center focus on what you can control, any other effort is wasted
People who want a deep understanding of something are often driven by curiosity rather than any practical need
Take most start-up founders: they look at the same world everyone else does, but notice some odd detail or gap that's compellingly mysterious and act on it
Tips to make writing direct & concise:
1. Delete “I think” or “in my opinion.” Its self-evident
2. Expand your vocab arsenal to replace sentences with words
3. Replace gerunds with verbs
4. Replace passive voice with a subject (I, you, he etc.)
5. Elaborate selectively

Most self-help books today are terribly ineffective.
They’re “feel good” books that repackage the same ideas
Real self-help was written way back:
1. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (Stoicism in general)
2. Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
3. Ibn Tufail’s Novels
When reading a great book, or watching a riveting lecture, try not taking notes for once
Pay attention to the notes your mind stores on its own
Forgetting the irrelevant stuff is an advantage, not a defect - the biological filter exists for a reason
These are trying times—give yourself permission to be both optimistic and realistic
Create a healthy tension that keeps optimism from evolving into denial and realism from devolving into cynicism
Keep supporting loved ones and those in need🙏🏻
"Be discriminating about what images and ideas you permit into your mind. If you yourself don't choose what thoughts and images you expose yourself to, someone else will, and their motives may not be the highest."
- Epictetus, The Art of Living
Hard to understand the present - or attempt to predict the future - without grasping history
The Lessons of History' by Will & Ariel Durant is a masterclass
One of the highest wisdom-per-word books ever produced.
I can’t end the semester without thanking Secretary Ash Carter for an incredible class on national security. I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity to learn from his experience as SecDef
A podcast thats actually worth your time featuring recipient of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics Sciences, Daniel Kahneman
@ShaneAParrish
and Kahneman cover decision-making, negotiation, cognitive bias and much more
More often than not, success is a byproduct of learning, and learning is a byproduct of curiosity.
If you’re curious about something, you will be successful at it, and the more curious you are about it, the more you’ll willingly invest in it (time + effort)
Modern architecture really makes you question the appeal of efficiency
Islamic architecture seldom prioritized convenience over beauty - buildings are optimized for an experience rather than a fleeting visit
How you say something is just as important as what you're saying
Why? People often remember the energy they felt, not the actual content of what you said
Leverage tone, timbre, and body language to create the right energy
What function does art fill?
This excerpt beautifully articulates an idea I’ve been considering for awhile:
The ability of art to rebalance our internal gaps - a process which shapes our aesthetic preferences
Lots of people don’t realize that in their obsession for self-improvement, they’re losing themselves instead of finding themselves
If devoid of prudence, most end up judgmental. The pursuit turns everything into a checklist to validate false superiority - antithesis of progress
“If one can listen to something with all of one’s being, with vigor, with vitality, then the very act of listening is a liberative factor”
— J. Krishnamurti, The Book of Life
A lesson learned this year: Opposing yet complementary qualities/circumstances make for the best outcomes.
Qualities: disciplined creativity, rational optimism, successful failure, humble confidence
Same applies to circumstances—good days aren’t really known without bad ones
Joe Biden’s climate and energy plan is the most ambitious of any major party presidential nominee.
How does it impact states in the GCC?
Put simply, it's good news. I explain why in my latest for
@AlArabiya_Eng
Busyness is doing something. Productivity is going somewhere.
Everyone wants to get more done, but busyness is the enemy of productivity
Ridding ourselves of the need to multitask, or ‘feel’ busy as a proxy for productivity is the most liberating mean to that end
