US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency landing in the Hudson River on 1/15/2009. All 155 people on board were rescued with a few serious injuries and no fatalities. The governor of New York at the time, dubbed the incident the “Miracle on the Hudson.”

114 years ago today, the Wright Brothers flew a failed manned flight on the dunes of Kitty Hawk, NC. Because it was their 1st attempt, Wilbur stalled upon lift off and crashed. 3 days and a few repairs later, the Wright Brothers made history when Orville flew 12 seconds/120 ft.

9 years ago today, at 3:27 PM, US Air Flight 1549 made an emergency landing on the Hudson River after a bird strike left both engines w/o thrust. 3 days later, the plane was removed from the river. 2 years later, the plane finally made it to its final destination: Charlotte, NC.

in 1921, Wesley May strapped 5 gallons of fuel to his back and walked onto the wing of a Curtiss Jenny. By pulling himself onto the lower wing of a nearby plane, May transported the 5 gallons of fuel and became the first air-to-air refueler in history.

Dec. 17, 1903: Wilbur & Orville Wright took turns piloting and monitoring their flying machine in Kill Devil Hills, NC. They became the first people to demonstrate sustained flight of a heavier-than-air machine under the complete control of the pilot.

On July 15, 1953, the Regulus 1 became the first operational cruise missile in US history. Six years later, a Regulus 1 made the first and only delivery of Missile Mail.
It didn’t start a new trend in airmail, but it did deliver a message about the accuracy of US missiles.
