Today I am at Torkham, on the Afghan border with Pakistan, where 10s of thousands of Afghans have gathered, having been expelled from Pakistan. >2,000 families have crossed here in the past 24 hours. We’re seeing perhaps the largest forced expulsion in the world since the 1950s.

5 bombs went off in Afghanistan today - in Mazar, in Kunduz, in Kabul, and in Nangarhar. The day started with a Taliban announcement banning TikTok and the video game PUBG. It’s going to end with a lesson for the government that there are much, much bigger things to focus on.

You know what I hope Taliban delegations get to travel everywhere. I hope their host countries take them on tours of schools, universities, maternity hospitals, science labs, gyms, public parks, art galleries, museums, etc etc. I hope they talk to a lot of people and learn a lot.

This funerary jar is almost 5,000 years old. It was dug up in modern-day southern Afghanistan. Today, you can see it at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

I’ve spent the past year telling people they should visit Afghanistan or talk to people who have visited before fully forming their opinion. This guy’s post-visit take has me seriously reconsidering that advice.

@FatmaFaizi No, thank you. A lot of the data above comes from your work on the NYTimes Afghan War Casualty Report for the past several years. The world won’t forget thanks to your hard efforts.

This is a very reasonable point. Why is the NYT revealing facts in a 7-month investigation and publishing it as an Opinion video?

Honestly, Lebanese politics makes the Taliban look like the Swiss government.

I recently came back from a short trip in Uzbekistan (Samarkand and Bukhara) and the photos speak for themselves.

Plenty of people are trying to point out to me that most of the Afghan returnees so far returned “voluntarily”. This is only true insofar as they are “voluntarily” complying with an expulsion order. And today we’ve started to see the arrival of many who were physically forced.

Brown people problems: a few months ago my family all flew into the US to celebrate my grandma’s 90th birthday. This week my mum found out my grandma is actually 86, and the US officer just put a random year on her entry documents when she immigrated in the 70s.

Saleh, who is thought to be with them, declared himself President today, invoking the constitution. This may be an attempt to strengthen his position before any negotiation, should the Taliban choose to have one.

The Taliban are not under any pressure at all right now to cut a deal with the Panjshiris. They can ignore them indefinitely. While the Taliban cannot take the Valley, the Panjshiris can’t exactly leave. Unless they can rally more support from home and abroad.
