I have something to get off my chest. It drives me wild when I’m out, just me and the kids, and someone walks by and says ‘looks like dad’s babysitting today.’ No. It doesn’t look like dad’s babysitting. Dad isn’t the babysitter. Dad is the parent. He’s parenting.

Went to local John Deere dealership to pick up some parts. Took the kids for a drive past the tractors before we left. 5 year old sees a John Deere 4020 (with a puddle of oil underneath) in the lineup. “That looks like one in our price range” he says. Damn. He’s right.

A really close call. This calf was born with the sack over his head. He was twitching when I got here- not breathing at all. Pulled it off and tickled his nose until he took a breathe. I think he’ll be alright.

People say “I grew up on a farm so I know what farming is like” and I’m going to call horseshit. I grew up on a farm too and knew what growing up on a farm was like. But I didn’t know shit about farming. It took me until my 30s to realize it. I’ve barely started to accept it.

Something happened today that NEVER happens. We finished all the fall work before the weather turned nasty. The corrals are cleaned; the feed is in; the calves are weaned and weighed and treated. We’re not in danger of having no work to do- but at least we aren’t floundering.

Farming can be a damn lonely job. Sometimes it’s physically lonely. Sometimes it’s emotionally and intellectually lonely. I like what I do and I want no one’s pity. But I reckon it’s healthy to admit you find some stuff hard every now and then.

My family came out to the field this evening so I shut the tractor down for a few minutes. We ate cabbage rolls cross legged on the ground and had a really short, impromptu ball game on the cultivated ground. Then the kids took turns riding along with me. I’m a lucky guy.

Some of you are awfully defensive about selling hay by the bale instead of by the lb. I’ve weighed every single bale we’ve fed this winter. There’s as much as 450lbs difference in bales that look the same from the same baler and the same field. You need to sell by the lb.
