A few months ago I found that the original 35mm film exists in the BBC archives - about 20 minutes of footage in all, a good chunk of which features the boys improvising on the famous bench. (3/7)
Clips, titles and some of the best idents in broadcasting - a little mash-up I've done for tonight's Newsnight to celebrate BBC2's diamond anniversary. It's been a treat seeing my work on this channel, my broadcasting home for many years. Very sad I'll soon be leaving it.
From blackouts to broadcast blockbusters โ BBC Two turns 60 this weekend.
To mark the occasion, hereโs a
#Newsnight
mash-up of some of its best moments.
Made by
@StuartDenman
The team has been living and working with this news since it was leaked to the Times two months ago but it's still devastating. It's been a privilege to work with so many talented friends and colleagues over the years.
Veteran Radio 1 and Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright โ known to millions for his voice, personality and love for his audience โ has died suddenly at the age of 69.
#Newsnight
pays tribute to one of the BBCโs most recognisable voices, in his own words.
From Daleks to Downing Street. Tonight on
@BBCNewsnight
, on the eve of
@BBCiPlayer
launching the Whoniverse,
@TobyHadoke
takes a look through 60 years of Time Lord tales to see when Doctor Who has dabbled with politics and social commentary.
I don't usually post personal stuff on here, but I found out today that someone very dear to me and my family has died and wanted to write something about her. Her name was Vicki and she was a foster carer.
Iโve reedited the Bottom title sequence using a new transfer of the film and recreated the captions. It hasnโt been cleaned up but it is in HD. Iโve also graded it a little. You can see the results here: (4/7)

If anyone is still awake, the first Ros Atkins on the Week is about to play out from studio A... Finished editing about half an hour ago.

A little piece I've made about the "topical drop-in scene" used in soaps, often added to
@bbceastenders
but being done on
@BBCHolbyCity
for the first time tonight. I filmed this last week, which now seems like a lifetime ago.
44 years ago today
@bbcnewsnight
aired on
@bbctwo
for the first time, broadcasting from TC5 at Television Centre on a beige set. It initially aired from Monday to Thursday as Multi-Coloured Swap Shop needed the studio on Fridays. (1/8)
@maitlis
It's true. Friday nights at TV Centre involved running down to the WHSmith next to Studio 8 for a fresh bag of Revels, then watching in amazement as
@maitlis
guessed most of them wrong.
As was common by then, โcleanโ versions of the opening and closing credits were kept on the end of some of the master tapes. Although in SD, Iโve been able to brighten up the closing sequence and recreate the credits. (6/7)
๐ซ SHOWREEL | A short Newsnight tribute to actress Gudrun Ure, who has died aged 98.
Perhaps best known for the lead role in the 1980s children's series, Super Gran.
For anyone interested, a snapshot of my
#fcpx
timeline for last night's montage. Music was This Land is Your Land by Woodie Guthrie, followed by two versions of a production track called Emotional Catastrophe by Flavio Lemelle.
As Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th US president today, his inauguration ended one of the most dramatic political transitions in American history.

I'm grateful that my own son had you in his life. Thank you, Vicki, from the bottom of my heart, for all that you did for him and for us. You will always be remembered. You will always be loved.
This film transfer was done with a Cintel Blackmagic Scanner 2. Thereโs evidently more picture information available. This latest scan has favoured one part of the frame. I havenโt made any framing choices. (5/7)
If you're a fan of fonts and have a soft spot for signage, don't miss our interview with legendary graphic designer Margaret Calvert, who co-created something we see every day. On
@BBCNewsnight
shortly (at 11.22pm).
As Iโm sure only old TV and font nerds follow me on here (why else would you?!), I thought itโd be worth sharing this: I was asked by
@StuartDenman
if I could help identify the title fonts used for โBottomโ. And I have. Use this vital information wisely, my children... ๐

40 years ago today,
@bbcnewsnight
was billed to air for the first time: Monday, 28th January, 1980. But an ongoing disagreement between the BBC and the unions kept it off air. BBC2 repeated an episode of Arena instead. Newsnight finally launched on Wednesday, 30th.
One BBC observer said "the weather was his favourite item".

Not sure I imagined that the first edition of our new weekly series would land on a day like this. But here we are. This is the first minute. Fingers crossed, you approve. It's live on BBC1 later - and on
@BBCiPlayer

Vicki made a real difference to the lives of young people. As I think of the huge loss to her own young son and to her family and friends, I also think of the numerous children in need of care in the future who won't benefit from her reassuring presence in their turbulent worlds.
Telling other people's stories is always a privilege and great responsibility, but I don't think I've ever felt that as keenly as while flying solo on this film. Thanks to Jareth and Phil for talking to me again.

When the little boy who would become my son was taken into care, it was Vicki who loved and nurtured him and introduced him to a different life. A year later, when he was matched with me and my husband, it was Vicki who prepared him for the transition.
