My take on the foreign policy challenges that await a possible Starmer-led Labour Government - where there will be continuity, where there will be change, & where there will be defining choices to make.

Britain’s Probable Premier Charts Course for Stormy World | "While foreign policy is not a major discussion point in the UK general election campaign, a new Labour government will face multiple challenges."

Not sure how hard some private schools have tried to find savings. Over 10 years, private day fees increased annually by 14% above inflation while state schools saw real terms cuts. Real terms gap between state & private funding increased from 40% to 90%. (Source - IFS)
Another sign that respect for international law & the authority of international organisations is back to the fore in UK foreign policy. The ICJ, the UN's maritime tribunal & UNGA all called for this. Let's hope UK respect for international law is consistently applied from now on
“They agreed on the importance of holding regular EU-UK Summits at leader-level to oversee the development of the relationship. They agreed that a first Summit should take place ideally in early 2025”.
Good news & will likely become the clearing house for all major UK-EU issues

What a terrific, subversive & joyful film "My Favourite Cake" is: Maryam Moghadam & Behtash Sanaeeha's mischievous film about carving out the space for love late in life, against the odds (& in spite of the Morality Police). Yet another superb slice of original Iranian filmmaking
Kemi Badenoch says that young Conservatives are being marked down by their universities because of their politics.

Robert Jenrick falsely claims energy prices recently quadrupled as a result of net zero, ignoring the reality that it was due to the spike in (checks notes) fossil fuel prices after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

I was impressed with James Cleverly's speech, especially channeling Jürgen Klopp's embrace of being normal. It's the nature of the job that politicians can never really be normal but after the last decade the Tories aiming for it seems the right project for them. So he won't win.
Unreal, it really shows how unserious these people are, ready to destabilize the entire planet for petty personal revenge.
Boris Johnson in his newly published memoirs reveal that AUKUS was a "revenge" against Macron because he "suspected him" of purposefully not doing enough to
🚨 New research: British overseas territories are the world's biggest tax havens.
$84 billion of global corporate tax revenue is estimated to be lost into the UK and its British tax havens every year.

Israel’s desire to restore its deterrent is one thing. But careering headlong into forever wars is not a recipe for long-term security and stability, for the country or the region

Hi
@JohnLewisRetail
: your online insurance portal sends messages after payment attempts saying "Your payment can't be processed: please try again or use another card". Imagine my surprise when my bank told me you took the money after all even when you asked me to try again. Wtf?
We all know there was never a plan. There was probably a remark. And my money is on the remark being made with more than half an eye on it providing a good, exaggerated nugget for the memoir. Or even planning for the Saturday of the serialisation. Because that’s the real him.
Ian Fleming & Raymond Chandler in conversation for the BBC Light Programme in 1958. Absolutely full of pearls.
Chandler: Well I’ve known people I wanted to shoot
Fleming: What did you want to shoot them for?
Chandler: I just thought they’d be better dead
One of the key lessons learnt the hard way by MPs in the 2009 expenses scandal was that you can play by the official rules of declaration & still fail the taste test in the court of public opinion. It is striking that only 62 MPs out of the current 650 were MPs at that time.
