True story: in grad school, I rewired the entire breaker box in one of the NMR labs so we could add 3 MAS NMR amplifiers ($100k of equipment) - 3-phase 208. We got an estimate that it would take maintenance 11 months to do it. My awesome colleague, Nicole, and I did it in 2 days.

@BrianRoemmele Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) has a Moh’s of 9, Brian. I’d bet anything they used raw latex with hemp paper and bauxite or kaolinite as the abrasive. Then, cured and sun dried and cured again. Kaolinite can be found in many places, like Yemen.
