High School Dropout. Laid Off Factory Worker. Formerly Disabled. Master's Degree. Director of Operations. Keep moving forward and never settle for less.
I do think we should take a second to recognize that while Mark Robinson sucks,
@JoshStein_
is a fantastic candidate in his own right and will be a great Governor.
My campaign simply would not exist without
@abreezeclayton
's support and belief that rural districts matter. That a good ol' boy like me should run for office and share my story. I will be forever grateful.
Been a long day. But I can't end it without telling you that I met with the Wilkes County Democratic party tonight. One of the reddest counties in the state. It was so packed they literally ran out of chairs. The
@NCDemParty
is cooking with 🔥 right now.
So I was gonna write up some kinda draft thing to send out like an official statement on the stupid right wing commentary about Gus Walz. It's more personal to me than that so I'm just gonna type. My day job is Director of Operations for an agency that helps people with I/DD. 🧵
One of the big themes of tonight's meeting was the shut-up-ism on the GOP side. If they don't like what you say, or how you vote, they will re-draw the maps to shut you up, take away voting rights to shut you up. "Oh shut up" is now a GOP legislative theme.
The days of Dem candidates in R+ a million districts speaking to a crowd of a half dozen people is OVER. I have said it, you have heard me say it, the GOP officials in state legislatures have overplayed their hand. We're calling their bluff.

Back at the factory, people would bring up unions from time to time. We were always told, if you do that, they will just close the factory and move it overseas. Well, we never organized, and guess what, they closed the factory and moved it overseas anyway.
#friendoflabor
Just mention the words climate change, and you are politicizing a tragedy. But accusing FEMA of stealing supplies, that's just asking questions, holding government accountable, so the story goes.
I also want to add, that one of Trump's big "cut" ideas is to slash or abolish Social Security Disability Insurance, without which I would not be speaking to you all now. Short thread 🧵
To all the Republicans who boo when Democrats call you out for wanting to cut Social Security and Medicare....
...do you hear what the leader of your party is saying? Take it up with him.
I see people are now calling student loan forgiveness welfare. Somehow cheating the people who paid their loans off, via income based repayment or in full. This is just another example of how we don't understand that everyone's situation is different. Thread 🧵
Mocking someone with a disability, I'm not talking about cancel culture and jokes and all that, but mocking someone with a disability for exercising their right to publicly advocate for themselves and their rights and their father, is shameful.
I wasn't really sure about the "weird" tag at first, but so far we have dead bears, shot dogs, couch fuckery, electrocution by drowning batteries, the menstruation police...I gotta admit this is pretty fuckin weird.
Gus deserves dignity and respect. He had a genuine moment seeing his father on the biggest stage in the world. It was an inspiring, human moment, one that doesn't require sympathy, but empathy and appreciation.
One thing I have to say. I've been to a lot of these meetings since October. Democrats are FED UP AND FIRED UP. Independents too. For months I've been saying, the GOP has overplayed their hand. A lot of Republican voters too (1)
I usually don't share memes, especially ones with paraphrasing. It just doesn't seem to add to the discourse and generally just enflames passions in an already overheated environment. But I will use this opportunity to do a thread 🧵on my history with
@sternshow
.
You have heard me say this 1000x…and many people are listening. But, having it come from the inimitable
@HowardStern
, now that’s a whole different level of megaphone!
Like this and retweet using the 💙 to show you stand for democracy and with
@POTUS
@JoeBiden

I haven't spoken much about policy on here yet but vouchers are a scam established to drain funds from public education. There is a war on public education in this state and it is disguised with buzz words like "vouchers" and "CRT" and "Parents Bill of Rights."
The “school choice” voucher system is taking money from the education of ordinary kids to transfer it to wealthy parents.
It’s highway robbery by the NC Republican Party, and our kids are worse off for it.
If you think young people aren't engaged in this election cycle, you are sorely mistaken. Young Democrats of the Yadkin Valley is a GREAT group and I loved chatting with them over some
@Bojangles
in Jonesville tonight!
@abreezeclayton
Just to throw another shout to out to
@abreezeclayton
, I'm in an R+26 district. I have raised almost $6k. I have no primary opponent. And when I file my fundraising report next month, you're gonna see some Republican donors on there too.
Every time I try not to get riled up on this issue I get riled right back up. IMMIGRATION IS THE PURVIEW OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. NORTH CAROLINA IS NOT A BORDER STATE. Those states who "stand with Texas" are standing with secession. THAT is the disgrace.
What an amazing gesture by
@charles_gaba
. I'm just speechless. He has done such an amazing job raising money for Dems in swing districts. Please give a boost to someone who just went out on a limb for me.
I work, every day, with people with disabilities. I come from a family of veterans, wounded war veterans. And now the right is on record, some on the right, multiple times, mocking and disrespecting both.
True Story: Old factory buddy of mine texted me today and asked for one of my yard signs. I said to him, well won't you catch some hell for putting a Democrat's sign in your yard? His reply: fuck em give me two signs. Ya'll ain't seen nothing yet.
@danielp_reid
@rolandsmartin
The Dem candidates in these small NC towns are raising their own funds - which then forces the Republican candidate to spend much more money than they would have, had they been unopposed. You can check out
@Staley4NCSenate
for a pretty good example of this in action.
I am an American. A patriot. I see democracy under attack. The Constitution being used and slanted in ways that make no sense. Many times with mockery and disrespect.
Howard Stern lists off some of President Biden’s accomplishments as they conclude their interview: I want to thank you for your compassion. We're lucky to have you in the Oval Office. I want to thank you for providing a calming influence and an organized administration post-COVID
So earlier this week I made a post about my dislike of NC Senate Bill 49, aka the Parent's Bill of Rights. Someone asked me to explain further and I offered to do a line by line take of my objections. So let's get this thread 🧵started.
It certainly doesn't merit mockery. For centuries people with I/DD and other disabilities have been sent to institutions, with poor conditions, to keep them out of sight and out of mind.
I'm working on thanking people and following people so if I get behind I apologize in advance. I was expecting about 100 people to see that speech (which was actually a bunch of scribbled notes on a legal pad I jotted down in the Holiday Inn parking lot).
Just a PSA. If you are voting absentee, as excited as you may be, please do not post pictures of your ballot, especially with the bar code on it. It is illegal in many areas and if that code gets scanned twice your vote could be tossed.
The last couple weeks have been such a blur. The last year, really, but in a very different way. Imagine running a hundred miles an hour and right at the finish line a giant oak tree pops up in your path and you run into it head on. What do you do next? Thread 🧵
I/DD stands for Intellectual and Development Disabilities. This doesn't make me any kind of hero. Not like the people who struggle with I/DD and still keep the strength to do more, their family members, and in some situations, the direct care staff who assist them.
I've spent the last couple of days in a fog of frustration. How to address the protests on college campuses. Whether I should address it at all. How do you talk about an issue like this, when the larger issue is so very complex and has been for decades. Centuries even. 🧵
Don't get me wrong. I know almost all of the people we serve, all the direct care staff, and their families. But I am not on the ground like they are. And it's hard. It is a struggle. It is hard. I advocate for these folks every day of my life.
Sometimes I wonder if the so-called Freedom Caucus even knows their own voters. I live in a very, very deep red district, and while Republicans here would like immigration reform attached, they OVERWHELMINGLY support aid to Ukraine.
I'll do a brief thread 🧵here. Caveat that this is meant to be just that, brief, and intended to make a point, and not a thorough historical account. Back in 2020, I started to write a book about the history of race in America...
I have discussed a lot of things here I never planned to discuss. I have put my whole life right here on the table. Because my story isn't unique. The only difference is most people don't have a platform to tell theirs. End of thred.
If asked on the campaign trail why the Civil War was fought, I will not tell the same lies that Nikki Haley did. I will tell the truth. The Civil War was fought because the rich men north of Richmond wanted to make Chick-Fil-A open on Sunday.
Now I could be a total asshole, and go out and ask all of these folks to do a campaign picture, or campaign video, with me. But I don't do that. I won't do that. And that is NOT what happened with Gus Walz.
I know this is gonna sound old fashioned, but I am so thrilled that my hometown paper committed a full page spread to my race. I love democracy so much.
Just got off the phone with two solid GOP voters. They have committed to vote for me, for Josh Stein, and for Mo Green, and will watch tonight's convention. No promises on other campaigns..but I'll keep at it.
On Friday I will be filing my official Statement of Organization to run as a Democrat for NC Senate in the 36th District in 2024. Most people will tell you that this seat is unwinnable for a Democrat, and they may be right. But people deserve options, and I'm gonna give em one.
I will say this. If any of the people on the Dem side who called for Biden to step down do not now immediately fall in and support
@KamalaHarris
I will light your ass up with the fury of god's own thunder.
The long and short of it is, yes, going to college is a risk, especially with student loans. When it doesn't pay off, why is that looked down upon, when a billionaire gets a huge tax incentive to invest and fails gets forgiveness, and that is somehow honorable?
One year ago today my Master's Degree came in the mail. It was such a proud moment for me. It gave me an even deeper appreciation of our democracy, and made me strive even harder to protect it.
It is terrible that women have to bring these very private, personal things into the public sphere just because we can't find compassion otherwise. They are all heroes for doing so.
A short thread 🧵on why I am running for office. When I was 17 I dropped out of high school to work at the local glove factory. In 2001, due to wrong-headed Republican policies, that factory closed and went overseas.
This does not seem to me like someone who will be imminently dropping out of the campaign. I'm not going round and round on this again. Biden is in it for the long haul. I have his back. We can Tuesday Morning Quarterback later.
A wealthy person sometimes risks a lot of money on a business venture that goes belly up. They were investing in themselves. But they get to file bankruptcy at the end. This option does not exist for student loan borrowers. If they gamble on themselves and lose, well, too bad.
I'll prolly hang around a while and play some music as it's my birthday. But my last official statement on this issue: replacing Biden as the nominee is a monumentally bad idea that will fracture the Democratic Party. Just want to go on the record here.
Thanks for sharing this
@abreezeclayton
and for everything you to for candidates in rural NC and across the state. There were some really, really good candidates on that stage and passionate advocates in attendance and you had us all fired up! Let's keep the momentum going!
📍Wilkes County tonight y’all!
@Staley4NCSenate
had me so excited to see him represent Senate District 36. Darren’s someone who’s benefited his entire life from the work of Democrats. We’re going to remind folks next year which party really fights FOR the people. ✊

@CoreyRForrester
My 97 year old grandpa. Suffered radiation poisoning at Able/Baker. The family had to fight LIKE HELL to get him full VA disability, after his records were "lost," and the suddenly "found." A certain someone called him a loser and he didn't like that.
So no. I'm not suspending my campaign. I won't be pushing any fundraising drives, but I will still accept donations. Partially because much of the reaction to the Helene response from the right is part and parcel of why I am running in the first place, and also..
Just spoke at a fundraiser for
@ChuckHubbardNC
. I've been closely following the NC-5th since 2004 and have been disappointed so many times. I truly believe though that this is the year, and that Chuck is the candidate to finally get it done.
First, Virginia Foxx told the media to shut up when asked about Mike Johnson’s efforts to overturn the election.
Then, she voted to make Johnson Speaker. I need your help to defeat Foxx and flip the House blue.
Can you rush a small contribution today?
It's really insane. So far this election cycle, my Republican opponent, in an R+26 district, has spent almost $75,000 to beat a guy who lives in a trailer. So much winning!

@JeremiahDJohns
@bendreyfuss
Is it not possible that he was, in fact, at a 7/11, in Manhattan, getting a hot dog and a Big Gulp, when some first responders came in, and he threw paper towels at/to them?
Please, ya'll, please.
@MoreeForNCHouse
is the best advocate for public education in North Carolina that I have ever seen. DO NOT sleep on his campaign.

Fundraising is wild. During the second half of 2023, my opponent raised $69,000, almost all big money donors. And managed to spend over $60,000 of it in that same period of time. In a district where he has an R+26 advantage.
Today I filled out one of those candidate surveys they send out. The Q was: what is one of the biggest challenges in your state next decade. My answer: We can't have thriving metro areas surrounded by rural ghost towns.
When I became president, 24 million Americans didn’t have access to affordable high speed internet.
Now, we're well on our way to connecting every last American to affordable, reliable high-speed internet by 2030.

Ok I did it. After hearing it suggested multiple times, I finally broke down and bought a sport coat to wear to certain events. I still have mixed feelings about it. What say you?
It is unfathomable to me that Mark Robinson is holding office right now much less running for chief executive of our state. This is not about some random online comments. This is who he is and anyone even halfway paying attention has known this for years.
#ncpol
All of the efforts by individuals and religious groups and charitable organizations are so laudable. They have saved many lives during this disaster. And these will always be important. But this castigation of the National Guard and FEMA, that's the tell. The underlying agenda.
I'll have a website and a fundraising widget and all that soon. But I'm running this campaign literally from my kitchen table, so I'm hoping to put myself on your radar soon as I can. I don't deal in sound bites and empty rhetoric. I wanna talk about the issues.
There is a reason I always err on the side of helping people instead of always looking at "fairness" or what we think others should do, or be able to do. I have never shared this part of my story before, but I will now.
Hey ya'll. As you may recall I just lost my WWII VFW grandpa. Dad and grandma are trying to do all the paperwork to get her survivor benefits. If you know somebody in NC Region I that could help it would be greatly appreciated. They have a meeting on Thursday in Wilkes. DMs open

I’m getting reports that mobile homes especially are being flooded. But this is just what I’m hearing. Gonna be a while until all this gets fixed. Stay safe out there. I’m bout to take my cell back to the car to charge for a bit. DS
This is my last comment on the debate issue. And I will die on this hill.
If Joe Biden drops out of this race, Trump wins.
If Joe Biden stays in this race, it will be close, but either Trump or Biden will win.
Choose wisely.
Thanks for attending my TED talk.
This is Ken Allen.
He works as a custodian at Southside Baptist Church in Jackson.
Like so many other working Mississippians, Ken and his family fall in the coverage gap and are left without health insurance.
Ken was kind enough to share his story with me today.
I'm glad that my friend
@ChuckHubbardNC
was able to make this video despite Virginia Foxx demanding that he shut up. From my experience, Chuck isn't a shut up kinda guy. Throw him some love!
While Virginia Foxx causes chaos in Washington, D.C., I’m here in North Carolina working hard to earn the vote of our residents.
We are coming up on a critical end of month deadline. Can you chip in to help me defeat Foxx in November:
So cool hanging out in a packed house in Surry County this afternoon. The hot dogs were off the chain! Missed the Wilkes Century Club but I'll catch them next month!
For all ya'll on the fence donors. Every nickel my opponent has to spend in this R+26 district is a nickel he can't spend on an R+5 or a D+5. Also, I'm gonna shock the system and win this damn thing!!
Let me say it about as plain as I can. Anyone who shames people for receiving the assistance they need to survive, people whose backs have been broken to enrich billionaires for centuries, is either ignorant, or full of shit. I'll die on that hill JD Vance.
Ok I'll stop blowing ya'll up with pics after this one. In 2001, at the age of 27, I finally got my High School diploma. I've told ya'll my story in words, tryin to also show it in a more tangible way.
Was so great hanging with
@abreezeclayton
this evening. Had a really good turnout, great conversation. AND, Anderson told me that I should not be hesitant to ask for donations so, yeah, DONATE PLEASE!
One person at the event said a relative from VA had seen one of my speeches on social media and shared it with them. Another said their daughter in NJ had done the same. Thanks
@abreezeclayton
!
It was so great meeting
@JoshStein_
at a local event today. Also got to spend some time speaking with
@MoGreenforNC
. Really great, super-supportive, and fired up crowd as well.
I started this campaign as the longest of longshots, in the reddest district in the state. But people like you liked my message and wanted it heard. You liked my platform and wanted it implements, and you helped me raise almost $31,000..
Just chatted with
@ChuckHubbardNC
for a half hour or so about his US House race against
@virginiafoxx
. I've seen people run against her before. Not sure I have ever talked with anyone as fired up as Chuck. Look out ya'll.
This man is running for congress in Georgia. I’ve hated him for a while, but now that he’s going after Taylor Swift maybe they’ll finally take him down
📣 DEADLINE: Help me raise $10,000 by midnight for
@NCDemParty
to stop MAGA in their tracks. Trump can’t win back the White House without North Carolina… and this year we have a historic opportunity to flip NC blue!
