This is the sort of place your helium birthday balloons end up when you let them go, or worse still, in the oceans where there's a good chance they'll end up in the belly of a whale, a turtle or a seabird. Dispose of them responsibly, please! 🙏 @N_T_S @mcsuk

Top tip for assessing the weather on St Kilda: is there a snowy owl sheltering from a hail storm outside your front door? If yes then it must be a cold day! ❄️🌨️

Look who made an appearance yesterday! Our beautiful snowy owl, Snedge, seemingly awoken by a noisy oystercatcher. She wasn't worried about me - taking time to regurgitate a pellet and have a preen - so I left her to it! 🦉

We spent an unforgettable hour with Snedge on Thursday as she was down in Village Glen for a bath. She came to rest on the other side of the glen from us where she preened and dried off in the sunshine. A fantastic encounter shared by the @N_T_S team! #snowyowl

Snedge was found perching on Lady Grange's Cleit in the village yesterday, with the Factor's House beyond. She doesn't usually shelter inside the head dyke, so this was a privileged sight, and demonstrates the severity of the force 10 storm! Thanks to Will Miles for the photo.

817 years ago this month a stormy series of events lead to the earliest mention of St Kilda in history. An Icelandic Bishop was blown very much off course on his way to Norway, and took shelter in ‘the islands that are called Hirtir’. Later recounted in an Icelandic saga.

Flying over #Skye with an excellent view of the Cuillins. Can’t wait to inspect the archaeology and historic buildings on St Kilda over the next few days to see how this wild winter has treated them. @N_T_S work parties might have a busy summer with repairs!

The National Trust for Scotland not only have archive photos but also letters and diaries. We think this image was taken on 6th August 1907 as the minister's wife notes - 'Mr. Milne (photographer) went over to the Glen' and this image is of a group of women in Gleann Mor.

#Puffins are a long-lived species that raise just one chick a year. In 2019, we found a dead puffin inside a burrow on Dun, part of the #StKilda #archipelago . It had been ringed on the same #island in 1981, making it 38 years old! #VisitScotland 📷 @mc2photography_
