's debut, The Flames, to
@DoubledayUK
in a "major" six-figure pre-empt! Based on the four "muses" who inspired artist Egon Schiele, it's described as "dramatic, scandalous, and gripping, this is a novel to savour". See more here:
Yay! It's paperback publication day for The Flames
Being a debut author is a weird and wonderful experience. You write alone, without any knowledge that anyone will ever read your words. But I'm so happy that this book has connected with readers. Thank you for all the support๐ฅ
โI donโt normally like Sundays - I find they are a dress rehearsal for death. A very depressing way to spend one-seventh of your life...โ This postcard just fell out of my charity shop book purchase... sent by Sebastian Horsley ๐ฉ
As a debut, I'm now firmly in "wildest dreams" territory
"As a feminist reworking of Schieleโs story that also redresses historical injustice, this novel is a glorious success"

Iโm a โfirst readerโ in writing prizes, putting stories through for a judge, and I can honestly say some of my favourite stories ever have been ones that didnโt make a longlist. I worry the writer will think their work isnโt good enough. Please keep writing and entering!
Didn't make the long list, or even the even-longer 'we also liked...' list, of a writing competition today but I still love my story, tenderly and strongly. Will find a soft-feathered nest for you yet, sweet stuff.

I'm so delighted that
@ImpressPrize
have chosen my novel The Flames to be published next year. I'm thrilled to be telling the story of the four women who were integral to the life and work of the artist Egon Schiele - Edith Harms, Wally Neuzil, Gertrude Schiele and Adele Harms
The four muses to the artist Egon Schiele are seen, sometimes very explicitly, but not heard
Who were they?
Their complicated lives are explored in my debut novel, The Flames, which is available to pre-order now (out 17 March)

The French artist Francoise Gilot died yesterday, aged 101
I adored her book, The Woman Who Says No, about her turbulent decade-long relationship with Picasso. She was the only woman ever to leave him, going on to establish a life on her own terms, following her passion for art

Hilary Mantel's death is such a devastating loss to the world. She was so generous and took time to encourage writers at any stage of their careers (I interviewed her in 2014, and she'd reply to requests always so warmly). I can't bear to think of the books we won't get to read
The Flames ebook is available for ยฃ1.99 on Amazon this August, as part of their Kindle Monthly deals, so snap up a bargain if you like novels that touch on art, scandal, nudity, feminism, all set in Vienna at the turn of the 20th century
This is a drawing of Edith Harms, dying. She is 25 years old and six months pregnant with their first child. The drawing was made by her husband, Egon Schiele, precisely 102 years ago today, for she died on the 28th October, 1918, of the Spanish influenza
Dream proof post, 73 Dove Street by

I became fascinated by Adele Harms. She died penniless and alone in Vienna, aged seventy-eight. I wondered how she must have felt looking back half a century, remembering the beautiful woman sheโd once been, wondering if sheโd squandered her chances. I adored her for her failures
Tackling well-known historical figures is a challenging undertaking, but one

I spoke to Red Szรฉll for
