Bottled water is this century’s biggest global scam.
South Korea has probably the safest tap water in the world - but everyone there drinks bottled water - the govt had to run campaigns to encourage people to drink tap water - with little success.
I have friends who wear hijab & are professors in the United States. In todays India they would not even be able to finish their education.
There is no justification for such harassment of Muslim women students.

We need to talk of unnecessary use of full body PPE for COVID. We now know that spread is primarily through air & contact spread is negligible. Can now switch to reusable cloth gowns & focus on good masks. & stop plastic gowns on flights. Biomedical waste needs urgent reduction.
I did my medical training in Bulgaria (cheaper than private in India + travel held an appeal)
Better teacher-student ratio. Early intro to public health, student orgs, ethics, exchange programs to other countries & more. Saw a variety of health systems early on - global outlook.
In case u r wondering why so many Indian students travel all the way to Ukraine (or Russia/ China) for med degrees? 1 Fees r lower than Indian pvt med colleges 2 teaching/training seems better. Several hav worked with us as interns & their edu is more well rounded
No money for ASHA workers

Tired of tweets calling India “progressive” because our abortion laws are better than US.
At a time when rights of women in another country are being trampled we are using their misery to sing our song
How very mature.
Nothing “progressive” about maternal health in India.
India’s government is faster at reaching the empty offices of a social media company than it is at getting suffering patients anti-fungals for mucomycosis or ensuring timely vaccines for a population ravaged by covid.

What about poverty, disability, mental health, vulnerable populations?
How is a healthy, rich 45+ person more at-risk than a 30 yr diabetic domestic worker who wont be able to afford care if she got sick?

Mumbai handled second wave better than other cities despite being first major city to get slammed
I spoke to families who took patients to jumbo center-they got a bed, oxygen & medical care

If you are concerned about coronavirus in India, note that it is only the public health system that is of any use at times like this. The central government is aggressively privatizing govt healthcare. If this continues,at the next pandemic you wont have any system to depend upon.

Don't run around for medicines.
And if you have diabetes - check your blood glucose at the earliest.
Everything else is secondary.
Monitoring is more important than medicines in mild COVID

Isolate & have one fixed person as caregiver
1. Start monitoring oxygen as soon as any symptoms arise (even if test result awaited)

We need to stop comparing need for beds, oxygen & ventilators with delta wave & assuming all is well

We are not ok

But HR & bosses & workplaces are being unnecessarily harsh 😞Not everyone recovers in 5 days. Please allow employees enough time-which for some may be weeks
Rest is important to avoid long term issues
Here is one reason why we are seeing alertness & action in India on covid…
Our leaders actually know India is not at risk (all experts have reassured & covid cases are holding steady)
What we are forgetting is -we are not at risk now -because millions have already died

I am so irritated by unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions. 😑
22 yr old - generally good health - just had some episodes of vomiting. And doc immediately prescribes azithromycin 🤐. Told him not to take - gave ORS & pantoprazole instead for relief. Vomiting resolved on its own.
Our state governments are fuelling antibiotic resistance on a scale that is unimaginable.
An entire class of antibiotics are being rendered useless as this massive government sanctioned, funded & propagated misuse goes unchecked.

It’s unfortunate that when an outsider holds up a mirror to the dismal state of public healthcare in India - they get trolled.
Is it fair that majority of Indians have to go to hospitals held together by duct tape & stretched, overworked staff?
What are we defending really?
Fuck. Have you been to any of the public hospitals ever? Do you have any kind of sympathy for people living poor in your country? Yes. I'm a foreigner, so not your people but am shocked at the lack of sympathy toward people living under poverty line in your country.

One thing I have learnt after a decade in global health is that we cannot copy paste from one place to another. Developed countries can stay at home. Developing countries need to devise our own flexible ways of working through this. We have created a heavy humanitarian crisis :(

I have much to say on the way foreign grads in India are looked down upon. It feels like a stigma.
We may or may not need more MBBS seats in India but we definitely need to make MBBS education richer, diverse & better. Esp. with regards to ethics & caring & general awareness.
All we do is blame the poorest of the poor.

Many people in India - despite having govt tap water supply - either use RO filters or use bottled water.
Please don’t do this. This is nothing but privilege.
Use other types of filters (UV/filtration etc.) which dont waste that much water.
A rough estimate -80% of women domestic workers in my area are working becoz their husbands either don’t have work, are sick, are alcoholic, or beat them - or a combination of all these

Friendly reminder :
There is still a digital & documentation barrier to vaccination
The distribution strategy for vaccination in India is inherently inequitable
And the PM did not talk about fixing this at all.
Tear gas is banned in warfare as a chemical weapon yet governments continue to use it in civilian areas without due precaution.
It is NEVER ever to be used in closed spaces unless the intention is to cause deliberate harm and fatality.
I cannot say that the education I received was definitely superior to any I could have had in India.
I’m sure there are colleges in India that are better or worse than the training I received.
But there is zero justification for the discrimination that foreign grads face in India
If only countries were as quick to enforce patent waivers as they are to enforce (highly irrational) travel bans - we would not be in the current mess.
Ok so I recently learned that those who give their aadhar for vaccination- automatically get enrolled into the Digital Health ID system - NO CONSENT??!

About 10 to 12 women die EVERY DAY day in India due to unsafe abortions
Third leading cause of maternal mortality in India.
US is no benchmark for reproductive rights or for healthcare
We always compare India with the worst in the world to give ourselves a pat on the back 🤷🏻♀️
In many countries/places we will still need some filtration at the point of use - due to poor pipes & various reasons. But simple & cheap filters can serve the purpose. Tap water mostly does not need RO filters.
Only if there is groundwater, it requires wasteful RO filtration.
It is not an easy choice or decision to make. It was not a smooth ride with several challenges through the years. You are young and you land in a country where you dont speak the language.
I assume things are easier now as English penetration/fluency has increased globally.
The quiet deaths.
We cannot imagine the quantum of underreporting of covid cases in India.
No testing in rural areas; 20 - 60 deaths in villages.
No chase for oxygen or hospital beds - since they know there is none.
All graphs are a very poor approximation of reality.
Trivia Question
Which five states have started privatising district hospitals (PPP plan) by inviting private bidders?
No doctors are protesting or commenting on the dismantling of the public health care delivery system in those states 🤷🏻♀️
Nor is IMA whipping up a frenzy there.
Most NRIs refuse to drink RO water when visiting India. Please dont be like this.
RO filters dont leave anything in the water - not even water 🤪. RO water at your India home is probably safer than your mineral bottle of doubtful origin.
