“Solar oversupply is to almost nobody’s benefit”
Bull fucking shit. Cheap panels save the species from climate denying criminals. Scott has a PR job that misaligns with his human being job.
Solar oversupply is to almost nobody’s benefit. Behind the meter installs are down this year even with unlimited access to the cheapest panels in history. Interest rates, permitting, transmission, land availability, local opposition, etc. are the main barriers to deployment.(4/x)
That’s a solar panel.

So what’s missing? How do we fix this? What went wrong?
I am down with this idea!
Six inch tall vertical solar modules on rooftops covered with lichens (or moss). Probably optimal for northern sites, but probably not terrible for sites further south (though probably bad at the equator).
Ethanol fields consume 40% of US corn. These ethanol fields could hypothetically power the whole of the nation - electricity, heat, transportation- if converted to solar.
SCOOP: The White House is expected to back a climate model in the upcoming weeks that will make it more difficult for ethanol producers to qualify for sustainable aviation tax credits, sources tell me.
Gonna have a 35% cell soon - and the a 30% module. And it’s going to come from one of the largest solar panel manufacturers on earth.
Then the USA will stamp a tariff on it because we’re afraid.

So Tesla, CATL, and now Samsung have million mile batteries. Guess it’s a thing?
Samsung says solid state battery pilot line is running, with mass scale in 2027. The battery has 500 wh/kg density - allowing for a 600 mile range. Suggested it’ll take 9 minutes from 10/20% to 80%.
Lots of people know that batteries make solar more valuable, but most people don't know that batteries make solar cheaper.
How is that possible? Don't batteries add costs?
Batteries cost money, but so do transformers, inverters, power lines, etc. Batteries lower the costs of

As of the end of 2023, there was ~1.67 TW of solar deployed.
The first TW, roughly, took 45 years to install.
The additional 0.67 TW took ~22 months. We’ll complete the second TW mid-2024 - 28 months total.
The third TW will be installed by the end of 2025 - ~18 months.

In South Australia last week, renewables were a little as 4% of electricity generation - and as much as 130%. That stresses me and I’m on the other side of the planet.
If perovskite solar module lasts 10 years, but is more than twice as efficient - it'll be financially viable to repower & recycle the modules every 10 years.
We could print perovskites roll to roll & then roll modules onto solar racking.
Probably cuts re-install time immensely.

1. No nuclear plant has ever lasted sixty years, let alone 80.
2. To get past 20,& then to 40, 60 or maybe 80 years costs billions in repowering costs at each cross over.
3. Spending billions on a solar facility every 20 years would enable facilities to last the same lifetimes.

last 124 weeks: 99.0% RE (1/4)

Seen lots of headlines suggesting we will see "massive" electricity load growth from utilities.
In 2023, electricity demand dropped. It has been roughly flat since 2007 in the USA.
Historically, utilities have predicted load growth forever - and they've been wrong a lot.

We could cover 100% of US electricity demand, including full transportation electrification, by using solar on ethanol fields which only cover 10% of transportation.
In terms of energy/land, solar is ridiculously more efficient than ethanol. You get 20-30X the energy per acre. Combine that with an EV which is 3X as efficient as an ICE vehicle, and you can go 60-90X the distance.
