I never mer Mark Hollis but always had the feeling that he was a co-tunneller under the surface of what that pop music might mean.
Here we are, there we went.
RIP
I guess it's about time that I said I'm doing ok. No long term repercussions from my surgery in Fürth (where my treatment was outstanding). It also has to be said that it was a close-run thing.
For now it's still time for me to have a bit of a pause, a bit of a think.
If the government doesn't formally close theatres, clubs, bars, restaurants they'll be consigning the entire UK arts/entertainment/catering/hospitality industries to the bin. Not for 12 weeks, but forever.
And they'd been taking such good care of us all vis a vis Brexit...
Time to announce that
@CherryRedGroup
have now taken over the Fie! PH catalogue and will be (re-)releasing stuff later in the year.
This is undoubtedly a positive step and I’m sure they’re going to do a much better job with The Work than I’m now capable of doing.
Onward!
I guess I should formally announce that my next release will be "In Translation", a collection of cover versions, most of which I've translated myself. It's a mixed bunch - Mahler to Leiber and Stoller, Piazzolla to Rodgers and Hammerstein. More news will follow.
I'm very happy to announce that VdGG will be playing shows in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Bath and London in May 2020. Info at and more news later.
In another time, another space, HB, Brain and I would right now be backstage In Helsinki raising a glass to ourselves, our crew, the audience and everyone who’d made the VdGG 2020 tour happen.
Well, here we are, apart.
We all know that the BBC is the Voice of the Establishment, has always been so. But this slavish devotion and obeisance to the voices of Brexit-at-all-costs is neither responsible journalism nor public service broadcasting. It’s shameful.
As VdGG are about to head out on the next leg of our tour, I'll take the liberty of posting this relevant thread by Steve Albini.
No, we won't be signing any autographs, we won't be posing for any photographs.
We're doing our level best just to get through the tour in one piece.
Music fans pull up. Bands are trying to tour again. Decisions about when to tour are always made far in advance, and given the relentlessness of the pandemic, when the time comes to do it, the band has to decide by a deadline whether to go or not, with imperfect information.
Day upon day the uk government has revealed itself to be both incompetent and untrustworthy. With the refusal to countenance an extension of the withdrawal period I now believe they are genuinely mad. Idealogues with a death wish are in charge of us.

Haven't read it yet, but I probably make as much of a fool of myself as I ever did in whites.
An unusual and entertaining set of questions mind.

As of yesterday I’ve become the custodian of this fine beast.
So many thanks to all those who contributed. I’m sure we’ll find a few tunes together. This one, though, is not going to be going in an aircraft hold!
Sorry, but it's inevitable. All the VdGG shows in April have been cancelled. We're working hard on rearranging them for September/October and tickets will remain valid for those dates.
At the moment the May shows are still on. But these are parlous times.
At times I’ve thought I was a young hothead when I wrote “the old school tie”. But here they all are -some noble exceptions-playing around in their safe home in politics about procedure, process, statute.
F***ing with this country’s future for their own sense of power.
There we go then, lovely show, great audience, many car crashes and some great extrications from them.
Such a relief to be back to the trio again.
Onward.
I've just put up a post over at about a new/old release.
I've completely remade "In a Foreign Town" and "Out of Water" and these new 2023 versions of the albums are going to be released as a double CD set by Cherry Red this Friday 24th November.
Hi
@MaddyPriorFolk
just thought I’d say 1. Glad to see you describe yourself as singist as I do myself and 2. Thanks for tapestry of carols which has accompanied present unwrapping in my family for more than 30 years. Now a tradition with grandkids as well as daughters.
Ok here we go. I’m in Helsinki having just done a vdgg show unlike any other. Yes, it’s Brexit related. Now that we’re on the outside the expiry date of our passports has become 10 years from the date of issue rather than the expiry on the document. If the date of issue is more
I may be being a complete idiot, but couldn’t we (uk) allow fleets of french busses to pick up anyone in the Calais region who wants to apply for asylum in the uk, transport them here and then have their applications processed? Look, no-one dies! No-one’s humanity is degraded!
Secondly Tim Bowness has a new release out on Friday, "Butterfly Mind". I put in a bit of vox and unspeakable guitar. All good clean fun.

The relationship between an artist and a long-standing fan can be a complicated one. But over time one realises that, perhaps with different footfalls, a common path has been trod. Fellow travellers. RIP Willi Rupp.
Well, as will have been obvious for quite some time, the VdGG shows in May have had to be postponed.
They've almost all been rescheduled for later in the year though and details are now up at
Best wishes to all, stay safe and see you there....
Meanwhile a couple of contributions of mine from some time ago are now out. First the 40th Anniversary celebration release of Womad, where I played a couple of shows with
@itspetergabriel
It's available at
A word about our own precautions on this tour.
In so far as we can we’re staying in a bubble with our crew, with no-one allowed backstage
We’re also NOT signing any autographs or posing for any pictures, to avoid any crowding - and risk - around us. Hope you understand.
I've been to hospitals too often over the course of the pandemic, and I can't remember seeing anyone who's not been wearing a mask; people with arduous, long, poorly paid shifts for whom it is a real ordeal to spend all day in a mask. I know I shouldn't be surprised, but I am.
Yes indeed!
I’m sure they’re going to do a very good job with the catalogue.
Much better, in fact, than I’d be capable of at this stage of life and career.
Different, but exciting.
Onward we go.
Here we are, there we went...another IBExpo done, another performance of “In Amazonia” done.
Another life-enhancing experience. Hooray and bravo everyone! Yes! Music!
@IBExpo
Everyone should be aware - and beware - that the account

is not me but an impersonator who is using my profile pic and has started following people from my follower list.
They lie and lie and lie, the likes of

and
@DavidGHFrost
. Then the likes of
@bbclaurak
and the papers repeat the lies without question. I am SO ASHAMED of and for this country.
It's with great regret that I have to announce that the Italian VdGG shows which were rescheduled for September and October have had to be moved again, to some time later in 2021 - hang on to your tickets! So sorry not to manage La Bella Italia this year....
In a song about domestic abuse I once wrote “if this is all that there is isn’t there somewhere to run to?”. I now think this government is subjecting us to domestic abuse. And we have nowhere to run.
Well, the VdGG shows in Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Italy, Germany and Poland have now been recheduled (again) to 2022. Info at and let's hope this will be the last tiime they have to move.
