Smithtown’s new Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Secaur was officially sworn in and took his oath on Sept. 14 by District Clerk Maureen O’Connor. Congratulations!

The district has appointed Timothy Hellmuth as principal of Accompsett Elementary School, effective July 1. Mr. Hellmuth has served as assistant principal of Accompsett Middle School since 2016. Congratulations!
High School West has been named a New York State Reward School by the State Education Department for high academic achievement or the most progress with minimal gaps in student achievement based on its performance in the 2016-2017 school year.

We are so proud of our Smithtown alums who helped Yale win a men's lacrosse championship this past weekend! John Daniggelis,a junior out of HSE, and Luke Eschbach, a freshman out of HSE, were part of Yale history as this is the first national championship in school history.

For the first time in Smithtown history, a little league team won the state title!
This past weekend the 11 and under
St. James-Smithtown Little League Softball team won the Little League NY State Championship in Rochester.

Congratulations to HSW runner Michael Danzi, who was named to Newsday’s All-Long Island team. He won the 1,000-meter indoor state championship as well as the Suffolk Large School title in the 1,000 and 1,600 meter. He ran 2:33.36 to win the 1,000 at the Suffolk State Qualifier.

The students collected well over 2,500 “Mr. Furey” bucks during PARP week’s reading activities which meant Mr. Furey had to do three TikTok dances!

The district has appointed Paul Strader as assistant superintendent of curriculum and assessment, effective Sept. 9. Mr. Strader previously served as the district’s executive director of curriculum since September 2013.

West senior Julia Savino has been named a 2020 Rising Scientist by the Child Mind Institute, one of only five students in the NY metropolitan area to receive the award. The award recognizes her promise as a future scientist in neuroscience & adolescent & child mental health.

The Sill Pantry at H.S. West will be open each Monday to provide families with non-perishable food and toiletries.
Students from the F.A.S.T program help stock the shelves. The pantry is named after Greg Sill, former history teacher at West who passed away last March.

Congrats to HSE for being named a School of Distinction by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and HSW for being honored as a School of Excellence.
Hayley Beutel (West) and Marisa Lee (East) competed at the Lindy 11 Dive Invitational today. Marisa took third and Hayley took first. Hayley also qualified for the NYSPHAA State competition in November.

Congratulations to Ann Naughton, High School East girls field hockey coach, who was named the National Field Hockey Coach of the Year. In October, Ms. Naughton received the New York State Field Hockey Coach of the Year Award.

Annette Pavlakis was diagnosed with cancer 11 years ago, while a sixth-grade student at Great Hollow Middle School. Her teachers, Michelle Manning and June Scully, went above and beyond, choosing to home school Annette. A lasting friendship resulted.

Smithtown's secondary technology integration specialist Tim Needles and HSW librarian Cathy Masrour recently helped secure a $2,000 grant for their Smithtown interdisciplinary STEAM Collaboration Project. The grant was based on the work done this year.
In an effort to keep its students engaged in sporting activities despite the current restrictions, the district has launched an intramural sports program for grades 6-12. The six-week program will begin Oct. 5 and run through Nov. 13 and is open to any students.

HSW's track team, the Hammer Squad, won their second consecutive county track championship in early June. This is their fifth county championship in the past six seasons.

The Field of Honor flags are flying high at HSE! Mr. Coderre's Leadership Class assembled the Field of Honor on Woodlawn Ave. in time for Veterans Day. Flags were purchased and dedicated as a fundraiser for the future Wall of Heroes project.
