Another party which barely missed the threshold is Hungarian minority Aliancia. György Gyimesi claims ethnic Hungarian politics in Slovakia is dead because of decreasing ethnic polarisation and that it is impossible for a Hungarian party to enter parliament on its own anymore.

According to (incomplete) data by Denník N from the Focus exit poll, PS dominated among first time voters, receiving 32% of the vote. They were followed by Smer, which did much better than expected and got 18%. Hlas came third with 10%, then OĽaNO with 8% and Republika with 6%.

Leader of left-conservative Smer Robert Fico stated that even though Smer voters may have differing opinions about Peter Pellegrini, he is at least not a warmonger like Ivan Korčok. He criticised Korčok for his support of the invasion of Iraq and the bombing of Yugoslavia.

Ivan Korčok stated that the results of the first round give him hope. "I want to talk to the tens of thousand of government voters who disagree with where the government is dragging Slovakia, disagree with changing RTVS into a state TV, disagree with amnesties for criminals."

Former PM Ľudovít Ódor will lead liberal PS’ list for the upcoming European parliament election. Ódor was a technocratic PM and didn’t plan on entering party politics, and he won’t be joining the party itself. He will also chair a planned PS think-tank.

Richard Sulík announced that classical liberal SaS will leave the 🇪🇺 ECR faction if 🇭🇺 Fidesz is allowed to join it. SaS previously left the 🇪🇺 ALDE faction which they criticised for being eurofederalist and closer to socialism than to actual liberalism in 2014.

Peter Pellegrini announced his run for the presidency. He will be the official candidate of social-democratic Hlas while the launch of his campaign will take place on 19th January in Banská Bystrica. The first round of the Presidential election will take place on 23rd March.

After the meeting of the national council of christian-democratic KDH, party chairman Milan Majerský declared that they will be a constructive and decent opposition. One of its main priorities is to change the electoral system of Slovakia to introduce 8 electoral districts.

The European Parliament overwhelmingly approved a resolution condemning the Fico IV government for its planned reforms threatening the rule of law such as criminal code revision, whistleblower protection reform and dissolution of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.

The ongoing opposition protests keep growing with around 30 000 people gathered in Bratislava and another 30 000 in other cities. PS, SaS and KDH plan to organise the protests every week until the Presidential election regardless of when the governments reforms get approved.

🇸🇰🇻🇳 Vietnamese community became an officially recognised national minority in Slovakia after the government approved the proposal today. Promotion of Vietnamese culture will thus receive funding from the state. There are now 14 official national minorities in Slovakia.

SNS backed away from nominating Rudolf Huliak as Minister of Environment. Instead it proposed leader of christian-fundamentalist Život Tomáš Taraba for the same post. Despite the fact that he also expressed climate-sceptical views, President Čaputová is willing to appoint him.

Liberal PS announced it will initiate a motion of no confidence in Minister of Interior Matúš Šutaj Eštok (social-democratic Hlas) for purges in the police force. This is despite the fact that its legally impossible to do so while the government is without confidence.

President Čaputová organised a meeting with all living Slovak Presidents - Rudolf Schuster, Ivan Gašparovič and Andrej Kiska. They all agreed on the need to reform the electoral system and suggested abolishing the single electoral district in favour of more local representation.

Interim PM Eduard Heger leaves conservative populist OĽaNO following his disputes with party leader Igor Matovič and becomes the leader of centre-right Modrá Koalícia, which will be renamed to Demokrati. It is unprecedented in Slovak history for a sitting PM to leave their party.
