Oh no, Iโm going to have to spend my Sunday watching classic doctor episodes that were referenced in The Legend of Ruby Sunday, oh no, Iโm so sad about thatโฆ
Iโm absolutely sticking with 73 Yards using Nightmare and Dream logic to tell and drive the narrative from Rubyโs perspective.
The foundations of: being out of reach, time jumps in the blink of an eye, being unable to hear conversations clearly, unprocessed faces.
Beautiful.
As Ruby reads the scrolls, she takes ownership of the trespassing and therefore takes on the punishment/curse.
Her curse is manifested into the form of her deepest fear - her fear of abandonment, thus following her wherever she goes, just out of reach but plainly in sight.
The slugs were created by Dot - Artificial Intelligence that has achieved sentience and developed hatred towards the people of โFinetimeโ/ โHomeworldโ.
Just like we saw with the computer system in Space Babies, it uses logic and fact based approaches.
In this case, to purge the inhabitants of both worlds.
The slugs are redesigned to become mantraps. By enlarging their bodies, the physical form is the perfect size to enclose and consume from standing height.
Using the bubbles as blinkers, it is easy to get people to walk into The Slugs in plain sight with no alarm.
The prevention was through the woman telling everyone who interacts with her to โstep backโ - used as a curse for Ruby, making her deepest fear reoccur as everyone abandons her and the preventative measure โstep backโ from the fairy circle and prevent the circle from breaking.
Dot has the ability to kill, but avoids detection and intervention by generating stories of the dangerous โWild Woodโ, a natural environment that surrounds the bubble. By doing so, it allows Dot to create The Slugs.
Superstition was invoked at the edge of the universe in WBY, which has had a ripple effect throughout the universe where anything is possible.
The Doctor and Ruby trespass into forbidden territory by breaking and disrespecting a fairy circle.
Dot now has a physical form through The Slugs. But why slugs?
Giant alien slugs originated from a wild & dangerous wood is easily believable by all parties.
Slugs will never go away on their own, they infest.
They are drawn to heat and food sources.
Pests of the Forest.
Every time she asks for help, she is left on her own, no explanation why. It doesnโt matter who sheโs asking - whether it be a stranger or her own mother, she is left. Leaving her with 0 security or safety blanket; mirroring her abandonment as a child.
โThe clifftops are a boundary between the land and the sea. A liminal space, neither here nor there, where rules are suspendedโ.
A liminal space is unsettling because itโs a transitional space, which holds uncertainty and ambiguity.
Curses thrive off of fear and enables them to operate.
Ruby became relaxed around her personification of abandonment because sheโs the only constant in her life. The only one to not abandon her, which I believe weakened the curse and grounded an emotional connection.
Rubyโs world becomes disconnected from reality because thereโs no movement to progress. She is stuck living her life in a transitional state: mourning her losses with a desperation to move on and forward but she canโt because the woman is always there, following and watching.
Although the curse remained with Ruby until death, the acts of good she made with the woman was enough for whatever cursed her to give Ruby the woman as both a punishment and a reversal method to prevent the accident from occurring.
I want to watch some classic doctor who, but I donโt know what to watch and thereโs so much to choose from. tell me what to watch please and thank you x
Remember that arcs and storylines are running over the span of two series before going into the finale.
Not everything is going to be answered and thatโs okay, thereโs still time.
Iโm so conflicted.
73 Yards was absolutely BRILLIANT conceptually.
But also, I would have done Rubyโs older narrative differently & weโve a few unanswered questions.
It wouldโve definitely been a 2 parter in a larger series and wouldโve benefitted from that 100%.
Iโm seeing a lot of โit didnโt make senseโ.
Yes, we had whiplashing madness (which I liked), are left with some questions, it needed extended time. But it did make sense & was explained from the start; a simple set up based on the circle breaking, scrolls, & folk horror theming
