While Japan keeps its borders essentially closed and significantly limits inbound tickets per day, 100,000 Japanese fly to Hawaii as tourists for Golden Week. The irony of this seems to be lost on many.
Today, my father who’d a “mild” case of COVID in September is having a heart procedure due to long term damage that was likely caused by the infection. Letting the virus rip through society is already causing longer health problems. He was vaccinated (hence it was mild).
I’ve decided that I can no longer make offers to students only to have Japan’s border policy destroy dreams. We are tired of completing paperwork again and again, but never getting entry. Japan is not a country for foreigners and I don’t know when/if that will change.
Japan's border closures since March 2020 are making research less and less competitive. I have 4 open postdoc positions and candidates unable to enter to take up the offered posts. I have about 6 project students waiting to enter, some since Summer 2020. My collaborative...
Since moving to Japan I’m appalled how many reviewers tell me to have a “native” speaker fix my English in papers. They are never native speakers themselves and their reviews are riddled with mistakes. They make assumptions based on location and assume I am not “native”. Lazy!
If anyone knows a young female Afghan physicist looking for an internship please send them my way. Should probably be pre-PhD level. Ideally undergraduate.

This thread is not easy to write but was triggered by something I read today. As a young female physics student and postdoc, I was frequently sexually harassed by senior colleagues. Conferences were particularly bad...1/10

Hotel near Narita refused my zairyu card when they asked for ID (they should not look for any) and insisted to see my passport « to check you can fly to Europe ». I refused. Since when is a hotel doing immigration control for Europe? Bet they wanted to see if I’d landed 😡
For anyone who thinks this makes sense, it does if you want to destroy a country's reputation for international level scientific research. Why are the universities not campaigning more vocally about this outdated border policy? My projects are stalling due to lack of people.
When you hear that another group has received 100 times more research funding to start investigating a topic that you've been the sole group working on for a few years, you have to question if it is worth even bothering. 🤷♀️💰💰🤯
I'm looking for a postdoc or staff scientist to work on (single) atom trapping in a slotted waveguide. Cold atom experiments. Please share widely. 2+ year contract at

I can offer one research internship to a student displaced from Gaza (if this is in anyway possible). If you know of a physics undergrad or MSc student with interest in optics and who has been displaced please get them to contact me.
Sitting indoors on Okinawa - not a single American wearing a mask despite all staff serving them clearly masked. It is not a restaurant or bar. Clear selfishness?
The Japanese government’s approach to international students trying to enter Japan is unforgivable. Since March 2020 there have only been a few months when we were able to get students into the country. Once more we are in a new academic year and students are blocked outside.
Our September start PhD students haven't been able to enter and we are a university that has to have a minimum of 50% international students so don't say that we can choose from within Japan - the usual response I get. I am sick & tired of this.

Maybe India should have voted against Russia in the UN Security Council to avoid this pointless loss of life. Important to note they did not take a stand against the invasion.
After too long, paper on evanescent field manipulation of Au-SiO2 Janus particles is published. Many lessons about review processes were learnt during the intervening 18 months since submission. The effect on authors’ mental health was devastating. 🤬
... projects with colleagues are suffering. Two visiting PhD students have been waiting more than a year; a visiting postdoc has been waiting more than a year; a JSPS-funded visiting fellow has been waiting more than a year and I now have another waiting for this year.
Japan to reimpose an entry ban on overseas students & business travelers due to concerns over the Omicron variant just after the government started relaxing the restrictions. The ban will apply to all countries.

Those who want to stop online parts of conferences ignore that a large % of the world’s population still has restricted or no travel. Aside from access to international meetings for those from poorer countries or without research funds. It’s a privileged viewpoint.
I didn't come from a top tier university as an undergrad or PhD (if we look at biased world rankings). My parents are not university educated. I come from a country on the wild edge of Europe and I'm female. If amazing people hadn't given me a chance I would not be here now.
Jennifer Sanchez, from Yachay Tech University Ecuador, has joined us for an internship with the hope that Japan will let her enter Okinawa in the near future. Jennifer has completed a Bachelor's degree in Physics. We hope we can welcome her to

I never thought this would get such attention! I eagerly await welcoming new students to my lab after two years of no entries. I just won’t make offers or promises to new students that I cannot keep because of this irrational border policy.

Because I criticized the Taliban for their treatment of women, Facebook has restricted my account! Claiming I promote terrorism. So is it because I’ve feminist views or is it because I don’t like the Taliban????
In Germany with 2 of my PhD students to attend the German Conference for Women in Physics. The two students haven’t had the chance to get to Europe before as they both started during COVID times. Hope they also enjoy Christmas markets!

Interesting way of ensuring that infection rates in Ireland look very low. Stop PCR testing for under 55s and anyone over 55 who has a booster shot. Very odd approach for votes (my guess).
Varadkar also confirms that PCR tests will no longer be offered for under-55s in good health, or boosted over 55s, from next Monday. Some exceptions for those who are pregnant, or live with/care for an immunocompromised person
Two new students have started their PhDs in my research unit this month. Hania will work on plasmonic trapping and optical beam shaping, while Sergei will work on holographic atom tweezers. Best of luck to both of them!
Early in my career here a senior Japanese physicist told me they’d successfully done research for years without needing foreign/female interference and that they didn’t need it now! Gate keeping at its finest and fully legal right now. All those dinosaurs must love the ban.
The blatent misogeny that happens in academia will never cease to amaze me. It is 2024 and I often feel we have made zero progress. One day I will write a thread about things I have witnessed in my career. For now I'm focussed on not quitting and always fighting it.
When the society behind a conference I co-chair says all papers must be reviewed from 24 Dec. to 02 Jan. by the volunteer committee I have to speak up. I refuse to do this work during this time and to ask our committee members to do it.

Absolutely not. He’d have helped by reporting this as it was happening. He brought the poor girl to her death, provided the tools for it and witnessed it. We simply don’t know what else he may have done. Guilty!!
Brief update from on board. On sea all day heading to Islas Malvinas (Falkland’s). Lots sick so far, I’m not! Islander toughness in me. Too much food, very busy day with lots of information (overload). Should reach land tomorrow afternoon and maybe touch it the next day.

Hearing of so many people from all around the world who’ve been refused entry to Japan in last 24 hours as their visas to move were suddenly cancelled. So cruel to those about to board planes.

I fell in March this year in the centre of Paris and shopping went flying. Several people helped me get up, gathered my shopping for me. I was impressed!
Exciting times ahead - finally I hope that the 5 postdocs, 2 exchange PhD students, OIST PhD students, and 8 research intern students may be able to enter Japan in the coming months! After 2 years of essentially no arrivals, projects stopped, collaborations not fulfilled.
Hanging out with old friends from my Innsbruck days while having a great time in Vienna - 28 years ago in Ibk we were all starting our careers!! The photons don’t age even if we do!
I’m on my way to Paris to finally take up a LabEx PALM visiting position for a few months that I’ve postponed since March 2020. This is the food in the lounge for breakfast. It’s safer to stay in Japan but I need a change. I’m expecting lockdown or WFH on arrival 😂
