Great video from Cameron! I find that if you expect Mojang to make an update that adds to progression, you will be disappointed. The biggest change to it in the past 7 years is netherite. I'm ok with this because Minecraft is best played as an infinite side quest simulator. (1/9)

If you've played on an SMP you'll know that the longer the dragon fight is delayed the longer the server lives. After getting elytra, players who go into the game expecting a linear experience run out of goals set by the game and leave of boredom. (2/9)

The video mentions Hermitcraft as a good example of this. When a new season starts, the Hermits get elytra and shulker boxes as fast as possible because they have their own set of goals to accomplish, and end-game items allow them to work as efficiently as possible. (4/9)

I hope this thread and Cameron's video can help make it clear why most of what Mojang adds is disconnected from the progression. A lot of care is put into features that fit the infinite side quest simulator. If you want a linear experience you won't get it from this game. (9/9)

With the trail ruins, you can: build a campsite around it, excavate it layer by layer, restore the chambers, expand it, build a museum out of what you find, etc. I wish they made the brushable blocks craftable so players could create their own archaeological experiences. (8/9)

@JasperBoerstra There is no consistent Minecraft style, it’s just good pixel art. Any stylistic rule one could apply to their mod’s art to appear Minecraft-y is likely broken by Minecraft itself. Equal pixel density? Look at banners. Low vertex count? Rabbits. Low color count? Stripped logs.

Fingers crossed that the faces of the pots use a block entity renderer. If the patterns are a registry then modders would easily be able to add their own! Hopefully it’s not via blockstates, as that would lead to an exponential amount of states being cached.
