This is my 15th year as a college professor. I’m not naive to or surprised by any of its agendas or devices yet, thanks to the “leadership” of my university, this has been the most repulsive and devastating two weeks of my entire career. I won’t recover. Neither will they.
This has to be the darkest day I’ve ever experienced as an academic. Universities ordering physical violence against the students to whom we’ve been entrusted to educate. Again and again. It goes against everything I believe in. I feel disgusted by my vocation.
I’m Black member of the faculty at
@Columbia

Just had explosive interaction w/
@Columbia
’s heightened security coming onto campus. They followed me to my office & then lied, saying I didn’t scan my ID for entry (I did) & I pushed an officer (I didn’t). An ugly scene followed. They did this to me, a tenured, full professor.
We out here—university teachers—refusing the authoritarian police state created at Columbia & someone in faculty housing is attempting to drown out our demonstration by playing music, inc. the national anthem. The colonial poetry of it all.

I’ve studied the subjects of McCarthyism my entire career. I made the mistake of treating it as history, of unconsciously becoming complicit in progress narratives. Today, after the president of my university dragged her faculty before a firing squad, I know better. 🍉🍉🍉❤️🖤💚
Calls to hire more Black deans and provosts is not dissimilar to calls for more Black police officers. We ask representation to do all of the work while the structure remains intact.

Columbia U is playing w/ lives. Evacuations set & reset w/ fear of arrest+ w/each; contd surveillance & informing; misrepresentation (if not lies) in the media. Yet, students dance & hold one another; make words mean what they mean & hold a mirror to the U’s gilded & empty shell.
I never imagined that I’d start an article w/ “I cry a lot for what I'm learning and those things that I'm being forced to acknowledge that I already knew,” but here we (urgently) are: vulnerability as tribute and method.

The mayor has moved on from saying "outside agitators" infiltrated Columbia's protests to saying there could be a bad professor out there "radicalizing" students.
Another low point in the University’s assault on grad workers. There is no softer side of labor exploitation or worker suppression but I participated in multiple strikes “in my [TA] day” and never do I recall threats to my future job assignment. Unacceptable.
