6 yrs of undergrad + 4.5 yrs PhD program + 5 yrs of postdoc = finally an Assistant Professor! I’m very excited to be less poor, I mean… have greater independence 😂 cheers to 2023
🎉 I am beyond excited to share that my NIH K01 grant was funded from the NIDDK on my first try!🥂to 5 years of studying neurodevelopment of executive function, appetite regulation, and obesity in children and adolescents! Thank you to all that have helped me on my journey!
I’m hiring a postdoc! Interested in neuroimaging, adolescent neurocognition, obesity and eating behavior? Email me or catch me at

Advice on startup packages? What’s typical for a junior early career, no grants?
I’ve been hearing anything from 500k-2 mil but anything above 1 mil seems to be going to my male colleagues in neuro.
Help me understand what is typical.

I'm teaching my 1st undergraduate class❗️Imposter syndrome at its fullest🥺 Last night, I got this gift and note: "I know that you miss NYC, so I got this for you" I nearly melted. Never forget the importance of teaching. It's also incredibly rewarding
IMO maternity leave in academia seems like a joke. the other day I was in a meeting w/ mom ON LEAVE! One of the males said, I know you’re on leave but I need you to do X,Y,Z. This really upset me & I don’t have kids. Anyone else?

What I tell my students is to never give up, even if life takes some unexpected paths. I had a bike accident during my undergrad that made me have to learn EVERYTHING de novo (e.g., simple addition, grammar, do memory exercises). I’ve learned to not give up!
I feel so lucky to have had the best mentors throughout my career in academia! This is
@GeierBrainLab

Tips for helping to create more in person lab? How to deal with those refusing to come in? While I believe in flexibility and the ability to WFH occasionally, scientific growth and productivity for trainees thrive on in person

We were arguing over LASSO vs mixed models at someone’s poster (sorry), then looked down at each other’s badges, saw the name and said to each other (almost simultaneously) with extreme excitement “OMG I really wanted to meet you!” Best first interaction ever

I was just at a conference and there was a session on saying no and the speaker literally told them all to say no to reviews… as an editor my mouth was 🥺 because then submitters get angry at you when your paper sits there. Also, not every journal charges to publish
When I was a grad student, I was always amazed at how fast
@KatKellerLab
could write a manuscript. She would say, it comes with practice. The more you write, the better you get at it.
Folks, I can report that 10+ years later, I think it’s getting easier. Hang in there y’all.
SSIB is my FAVORITE meeting. Everyone is incredibly welcoming and warm.

Just because you had a bad experience with one or two people doesn’t mean everyone out there doesn’t care about mentoring. I also don’t think that’s the point of this tweet. I spend countless hours mentoring to the point that it hurts my work/life balance.

Some great advice that I got today.
They asked, “do you enjoy the science?”
And I said, “yes”
They said, “then focus on that.”

So, tell me how do you decide to take a student at the masters and above levels?

What she said 👇. Listen to experts who study nutrition rather than pretend “influencer” MDs and PhDs who do not. Ask the expert not the one who has the most followers.

I went into my office yesterday (Sunday) and the most depressing part of it was that my entire floor was nearly business as usual (minus undergrads). Saturday was less busy but still active…
I think we spent an hour and a half together. And just this experience of teaching and mentoring, lifted me up, reminded me that I love my job and to keep going.
Thank you to all my mentees that brighten my day!
Mentoring is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
I’m excited to announce that Dr. Miguel Angel Rivas Fernandez has joined the Adise Lab as a postdoctoral fellow!
Miguel has expertise in neuroimaging, neuropsych and aging! Can’t wait to see what this collaboration will bring.
Please help me give him a warm welcome!
I recently gave my first IN PERSON talk in a long time. My biggest fear was that I was going to trip over my feet walking up to the podium because for the last 3 years, I just sat behind a screen. Anyone else with me?
Reminder that our jobs as scientists are super rewarding: I’ve had a difficult time lately and have had a hard time getting stuff done. You know, a real negative space.
But then, one of mentees walked into my office. We went over data and regular mentor-mentee stuff (1/2)
