I design ebikes
🚲 are transportion, vibrant local communities make parenting easier, design cities for kids
Tired dad of 3 under 6
Frustrated Oiler fan
I'm a parent with 3 kids under 5. I want them to grow up in a neighborhood designed with them in mind.
I recently learned of a concept called "the 15-minute city".
A city where everyone should have access to essential urban services within a 15-minute walk or bike. /1
This weekend I got a letter from the condo board in my neighborhood of townhouses.
It says we broke the bylaws by letting our kids play in front of our house
Apparently our kids are an "obstruction" to vehicles which breaks bylaws
But then they say it's a safety issue.
A common, poor excuse to discredit biking as a form of transportation is: you can only do it 6 months a year (this is BS, but humor me)
Why is it we never hear this same criticism about giving huge swaths of land to golf courses? 🤔
People can't golf in the snow
If an ebike is cheating let's make a list of other forms of cheating:
- Strollers. Carry that kid slacker
- Rollerskates. If God wanted you to move that fast, Jesus would've rocked 'em
- Power drills, hand only or train a woodpecker
- Plumbing, go get the💧 yourself
What else?
Today I discovered I have a neighbor, in their 40s and active, that drives 150m to a dog park to walk their dogs.
They think it's normal.
This is what makes the idea of walkable and bike-able spaces so unbelievably difficult for many to understand.
Saturday, I took a man in his mid-60's on an ebike test ride.
At the end of the ride he says, "I've been complaining about bike lanes for years. I guess I'll have to go home and eat my words to my wife, because this thing is incredible."
#ebike
rides are persuasive advocacy
People wonder, "why don't kids play outside anymore"
Streets and neighborhoods are for people. For community. For collection.
The pandemic was hard for many reasons. Isolation was a big one. Yet we design our world to promote it
What are your Underrated benefits of riding a bike?
For me:
1. The smells of flowers and fragrances of nature that waft into your nostrils as you ride
2. The ability to look people in the face, smile and say hi as you ride by on a quiet morning
The best bit of climate action you can take tomorrow is to let someone ride an electric bike.
I had ebike test rides with 4 people today. All of them said unprompted, "wow this really is the future of transportation"
They never considered that until they rode one. Now they see
Riding an e-bike isn't cheating, it's smart!
With an e-bike, you still get the benefits of biking (exercise, fresh air, saving money on gas) without having to struggle unnecessarily. It's a sustainable and environmentally-friendly alternative to driving a car.
#eBikeLove
Our 20km/h street is mostly local traffic. Much safer than most city streets.
We offered to do a traffic calming project with a grant from the city to make it safer. They said no chance.
🤷♂️ Guess they're just really anti-hopscotch. Or forget streets aren't just for cars
It's concept to focus streets and communities around people instead of cars. In a 15-minute city the easiest, most convenient way to grocery shop, take my kids to school, go to dinner with friends or play volleyball would be to walk or ride a bike. /2
Ignorance like this is sad.
I advocated for bike lanes to protect:
- my pregnant wife while she ebiked to get groceries while pulling my 2 infant children
- My double-amputee best-man who eBikes with his daughter
- My 92 yo neighbor on a mobility scooter
My kids playing out front has been incredible. We've met so many neighbors.
People walk through all the time and we get to meet them and connect.
The random run-ins are incredible for relationship building. And our condo board or really just that president wants to ban it
Today, I spotted some radical elites on their bicycles
These selfish youth want safe routes to schools & friends' 🏠s, can you believe the entitlement?
Not to mention they're having fun instead of being miserable in a car like their elders
Kids today need to learn some respect
Ebikers, if you could go back in time to give yourself advice before buying your first ebike.
What advice would you give yourself?
Mine would be to spend more money on an even better bike.
2. I want my kids to be free. I don't want to drive my kids all over the city to go to a friend's house or join a sports team or do any sort of extra-curricular activity. I want them to do everything! To be independent. I'm a dad not a chauffer. Does this make me a bad parent? /4
Here are 5 reasons why I want to move out of Calgary to somewhere designed as a 15-minute city:
1. I hate paying for gas, car insurance and maintenance. Doing daily tasks without a car would let me spend that cash on things I'd enjoy instead. Like a dance class w my wife /3
The magic of an ebike is its ability to change your habits and make you more active.
Riding becomes easier & 10x more fun
You ride longer, further & more often
You discover that you love being active because the bike amplifies your current ability
eBikes change transportation
It's -26 C in Calgary today, -36 with the wind chill.
Still dropped off kid at school and picked up groceries by bike because it's easier than driving for me.
Click and collect is the bomb.
Since buying an $80 bike 2 years ago in Calgary, my perception of how I move through my City has shifted dramatically. I used to think Calgary was pretty ugly. Now I know it has many beautiful spaces waiting to be discovered.
3. I don't want my older friends losing their freedom when they can't drive anymore.
I don't want them stuck in their house. I want to see them strollin' the hood.
I'm incredibly thankful to have kind, wise, and experienced grey-haired friends that enrich my life greatly. /5
This week we got to fulfill a dream.
We saved up for over a year to buy this cargo bike. It's our new family vehicle. It was an honor to buy it from one of our heroes
@BikeBikeYYC
who has been working to make Calgary more bike friendly for a long time.
What are the dumbest rules of the road for bicycles?
My pick is - dismount bike before crossing the road
It's slower & more inconvenient for the biker and driver
It increases time on road which ups the danger
It makes drivers think it's ok to harass you if you don't dismount
Our kids love to sing while riding on our eBikes with us.
Today my wife was able to capture my 3 yo's song.
We've traded tantrums in the car for this ⬇️ big upgrade 🥹😍
Sound on!
I have so many thoughts passing over traffic like this everyday.
- what an inefficient use of our space
- wow that's ugly
- glad I get to skip that herd
The most prominent thought is how our infrastructure isn't enough for peak hours & is too much for the rest of the day.
4. Since my taxes wouldn't be paying to maintain massive sprawl, I could enjoy great city services like great recreation centers and community programs. I could finally join a community improv class like my hero Michael Gary Scott. /6
@AmericanFietser
Buy a house in the suburbs they said.
The backyard is the safest place for your kids to play they said.
Oh wait it was because the pool wasn't wearing a reflective vest 🦺
TL:DR My life as a busy parent would get better if I moved to a city with 15-minute neighborhoods. I wish Calgary could change into that because I love the city and the people here. Oh yeah, and it might help save the world from disaster from the Climate Crisis/ fin
Today, while driving our 6 year-old home from the dentist, one of the only trips we still use the car for, the 6 yo projectile vomited all over
Now I'm cleaning puke from the upholstery
Had we been on the bike 6yo'd have thrown up on the road
Yet another reason bikes are best
@DaveThompsonVIC
@BrentToderian
Yeah the response I see often is, "That's just not the way we do it here."
Yes, I know we don't, that's why I'm suggesting we change!
If you've never ridden an ebike, your opinions about them are wrong and ill-informed.
Don't be so confident about what you think until you take one for a real ride
5. I would never have to deal with trying to park too big of a car in too small of a spot surrounded by too big of SUVs that are also in too small a spot. It's like trying to fit inside my old emo skinny jeans. Possible, but nobody likes it. /7
There are more important reasons that walkable 15-minute neighborhoods are amazing, like fighting the climate crisis and inequality. If facts are your jam, check out this article about why everyone should want walkable streets. Warning no memes. /9
“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.”
#CityMakingMath
@KaufmanBooks
This is definitely how it feels.
Had a 91 year old neighbor telling us how much she loves having our family in the neighborhood.
She said she's always sad when the families move out
I am thankful to see many people in Calgary that want similar things to me. I think the rate at which the change is happening here is just too slow for many. Hence this: /8
I cannot overstate the importance of attracting and retaining youth to Alberta. If we want to keep our youth we must diversify. The world is changing and so must we.
3 years ago, the kids' bikes were put away for the winter, exiled until spring
I didn't understand the powerful tool a bicycle is
Thankfully, my mind has been opened to a better way
Now I'm enjoying a perfect moment as my 6yo regales my 4 yo with an epic custom Pokemon tale
December 1, 2023 - Canada
4 year-old is still biking. Without a coat or gloves today 😂
Transitioning to a lower carbon future is simple in some ways. It just takes an open mind and a little imagination.
Something that seems to be in short supply these days 😂
Had you told me 4 years ago I'd drive to Edmonton for an event, I'd have thought it was an Oilers game
Never would I have believed you it would be to hear a conversation on bike infrastructure 😂
eBikes are creating massive change.
@modacitylife
It was my 5 year old's first day of school today.
Our mode of transportation to the school was a bit different than the rest of the class 😂
But we didn't have to deal with the traffic in any way ☺️
A year ago today, I was up until 3 am researching, messaging suppliers & talking with a manufacturer.
The goal was simple. Build an electric bike for Calgary. Capable of handling huge hills, volatile weather, and wonderful path system
Now they exist. Happy World Bjke Day ☺️
This weekend, as a TuffHill eBikes tradition, we'll be riding our bikes around Calgary 150km
We're taking the train to where our adventure starts in Fish Creek.
Beautiful day to ride.
As my friends & I (ex-university athletes) age into our 30s, we're trying to be active amongst kids & busy lives.
Todays discussion: getting stationary 🚲 for watching TV. 🤦♂️
Told them they could replace driving with a bike instead
Looked at me like I was an alien 👽😂
- My city's financial future
- to encourage all the people who wish they could be more active and bike, but don't feel safe
I think this person is projecting his small-mindedness. Too bad
Hey
#yycbike
, my wonderful wife
@TuffStephanie
, & I were thinking of doing casual bike rides, Monday evenings starting the spring.
Our hope would be to spend time with people who care about biking in Calgary & build momentum towards critical mass type events.
Would you join?
Society needs to laugh and smile more.
Today, I wore a Chewbacca suit to get groceries and my 5 yo.
It worked!
Ppl: how do you get groceries without a car?
Me: well, when it's Halloween I wear a Chewbacca costume on my bike 🤷♂️
@AmericanFietser
grocery ride for Halloween.
Today, I took a spirited 64 year-old woman for a test ride on our eBikes.
She was a bundle of nerves.
Halfway through the ride, after some practice, she rode with a broad grin on her face and exclaimed,
"This is the cat's meow"
Best description I've ever heard 😂
@AmericanFietser
Another quote by them:
"You just want us to change everything to suit your mode of transportation, how entitled of you"
Me: so you're accusing me of what car companies did to our cities at extreme cost to their citizens?
At least biking is cheap for everyone
Tip for making meet the teacher day better.
Ride and have a date on the way
First question the teacher answers asks, "did you guys really ride on just one bike together?!"
And these aren't radical people at all.
They just see how fun, practical and easy it is.
It's more convincing than any essay.
We can change the world a ride at a time
People of all shapes and sizes on bikes as far as my eye could see.
So beautiful to see & be a part of.
#Bikefest
was a great event. I had fun, my kids had fun. It was our first event as a company on the bikes we designed.
The future of movement is on 2 wheels
November 2018, I sit in a hospital room
It's Mom's 3rd time with cancer. I hoped she'd get thru again. She won't
We know her time is up. We wait. We listen to Fast Car
We float to sweet moments shared. My dear mom departs
Today, I close my eyes, I hear Mom singing along 🥹
Why do l want people to ride an ebike instead of a drive a car?
I'm selfish
I selfishly want to:
- breathe cleaner air
- avoid a climate catastrophe
- connect with more neighbors
- spend less on a car, so I can one day afford a house
- have more fun
What are your reasons?
Taxes rise because we build unaffordable communities.
We shouldn't be entitled to live an unsustainable life.
Tough part is most of us didn't choose this. It's been forced on us.
Thankfully we can change it!

How do we create bike advocacy momentum?
I've met so many passionate, caring & intelligent Calgarians who ride their bikes, but I don't feel any organizational mass.
I know many are just so busy, but so many people want the same thing. How do we build toward changing our city?
This person I was riding behind was watching game of thrones while driving.
I don't really blame her. Driving in a city is boring & we carry incredible entertainment in our pocketd
Though, I'd rather not share the roads with 1 ton metal machines who's pilots are watching tv
Pipe dream business idea:
Become a developer, take a small piece of land in Calgary
Build an affordable walkable and bike-able neighborhood with lots of green space, raise money from people who want to live there ahead of time.
Call it 🚲 Bicycle District 🚲
Saw this incredible bobcat on the ride home from school with my 5 yo.
We stopped and observed it for 5 minutes.
I feel a greater connection to nature and the world around me when I bike. I'm in it rather than watching it go by me.
Did the online grocery order and picked it up with our ebike.
The grocery worker was quite confused
"You're not in the parking lot? You're on a bike?"
He said it was the first time he's seen it.
I'll be back next week.
Fast, easy, fun and no temptation to buy cookies ☺️
@scottsantens
@ubi_works
The Canadian child benefit has definitely helped us launch our electric bike business!
It's allowed us to devote much more time to it so it can grow faster. It also allowed us breathing room to take the risk of jumping in
@AmericanFietser
Common things said after someone's first ebike ride:
"I haven't ridden in 20 years."
"Why didn't I do this sooner?"
"I feel like I'm 10 again"
Ok hear me out,
How about we make adults take a social studies class to learn the responsibility of the 3 levels of government in order to get a driver's license renewed.
Part of that class should be explaining where tax actually goes and the cost of our cities
@AmericanFietser
I've been in a car that hit 2 different deer in the city.
It was not an enjoyable experience.
On my bike, I've got to ride close to them and admire them, much better
Last week, we rode eBikes to the Calgary climbing center everyday for our kids' climbing camp.
The first day we didn't know it was possible.
We gave it a shot. Turns out it's a delightfully safe & fast ride.
Where've you rode to that you didn't think was possible?
Reminder that the term “jaywalking” was propagated by the auto industry to demonize pedestrians so they could push car-centric development and eventually make it illegal to walk in the streets
The most common phrase I hear from many people who buy ebikes, "I wish I had got it sooner"
It's never too early to get outside for quality time with the ones we love.
I know one day I will be sad I won't get to hear my kids singing while they share my bike 😭
@somesarah
I desperately miss cargo biking with my son. He's grown up now so I have to live vicariously through my cargo customers.
Cherish the time they are onboard with you. It goes by way too fast.
Studded tires worked incredibly well.
You can dress for cold shower weather, but the conditions of the streets are what make it possible to ride or not.
Anyone know of a plow you could use on a bike?
Maybe we should be building communities where independence is easy. 🤷♂️
Like the Dutch. Make biking safe and easy. Transit reliable & frequent
Reduce space given to cars. That space isolates our young, our elderly and parents as home with kids
New from me: Researchers are beginning to ask if a lack of childhood independence plays a role in the mental health crisis. "Today’s 18-year-olds are like 12-year-olds from a decade ago. They have very little tolerance for conflict and discomfort."
Hey Calgary!
We're booking ebike educational sessions in the city for the Fall
What it is:
- I present to your staff about the financial, physical & mental benefits
- teach you about the tech
- bring eBikes to try
- give buying tips
It's free. Would you be interested?
I parked a vehicle, that can carry 4-5 kids, easily gets me around the city & costs 25 cents to fill up, in the wasted space inside my house at the front entrance.
Imagine doing this w an SUV?
Thank you
@BikeBikeYYC
For lending it to us for the weekend Can't wait to get ours!
3 years ago, I didn't think this is my dream family vehicle.
I couldn't see what we've sacrificed for cars to dominate our city, the way my kids' lives are constrained by the metal monsters that roam the streets.
I'm choosing a bike for the hope of a better future for my kids
Ever wonder what it looks like to ride around the perimeter of Calgary?

Just another precious bonding moment brought to you by your friendly neighborhood ebike
Normalize and legalize electric assist on kids' bikes
No more tears
Keeps a better pace

Builds confidence that they can ride
So much damn fun!
Like a go-kart you can legally ride everywhere and isn't noisy
Bike nerds I need your help.
I'm trying to find more information on this bike. A woman said she brought it from the Czech Republic 50 years ago.
It's got a bunch of neat features I'll show you
