The episode I saw last night had something about “am I being peer reviewed” and I was sure there was some snarky ex academic in the writers room giggling to herself “get it? Peer as in colleague peer as in titled member of the ton”
🎉Friends! I am SO excited to share the news of my YA debut DEBATING DARCY! A Desi/POC, Speech&Debate Feminist/MeToo Austen Remix with plenty of banter, wit and sparks!🎉

wow - I remember when politicians didn't just yell and bombast at people. It was such a breath of fresh air to hear Biden and Cuomo speaking respectfully and sweetly to this lady...

I stand in solidarity with Maggie, against censorship, book banning & the silencing of conversations about racism, BIPOC lives & the struggle toward liberation. To that end, I resigned today as a mentor for the Scholastic Rising Voices AANHPI Narratives collection today 1/
OK. No more subtweeting. This is what happened. Full story at the link.
I'm so disappointed and furious and unsurprised. But I also have receipts.
Scholastic wanted to feature my book, but ONLY if I censored the word RACISM from the author's note.
Integrity is exhausting. Stepping away from a project I believed because they engaged in anticipatory censorship has been scary. But engaging in palatability politics to appease book banners is scary too:our readers deserve all our stories! Trying to be brave and make Baba proud

My mom brought me to all her undergraduate classes — if the professor said no kids she wouldn’t take the class because there was no where to put me - by her grad school I was old enough to hang out in the TA office and have the grad students be my v cool babysitters!

For no apparent reason, I'm just putting it out there that my forthcoming fantasy novel FORCE OF FIRE is inspired Indian resistance against the British Empire and the ways that colonialism/imperialism throughout history has tried to silence our voices. But we speak louder! 👑✊🏾
I have a lot of FEELINGS about this Vulture article "Who Gave You the Right To Tell That Story?" about the "most divisive" question in fiction and here they are in no apparent order because it's too dark outside and I'm feeling unusually ornery 1/

This - whether you are a publisher, author, teacher, librarian, book sellers - DO NOT DO THE BOOK BANNERS’ WORK FOR THEM. This is how fascism gains traction - when good people start carrying water for evil agendas. Who me? I’m not looking at anyone here 👀👀👀
I washed out this empty container and am having a lot of trouble recycling it because, well, *immigrant daughter* what if I need it to store buttons? Or safety pins? What if there is a button storing emergency?
My spouse put up a wall o’my book covers in our shared study and I kind of love them (bottom row - catalàn, Spanish, Bengali, Norwegian And German translations of

After yesterday's happenings on writer twitter, reminded of Toni Morrison's wise words: "The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being."

Pressing political question: Are Champ and Major in DC already? Their whole family is in DC - are they with a sitter in Delaware? DO WE GET TO WATCH THEM MOVE IN???
@Nishawrites
@ItsMissJulia
Love it! here's me and husband - I'm wearing a red sari which is traditional in Bengal with the same necklace my mom wore at her wedding visible!
Despite not giving a crap about honorifics usually, added the “Dr” to my name because you know what? I’m an MD and I’m still disrespected by those same people who say that women with PhDs women don’t deserve to be called “Dr”. (Psst - It’s not actually about that)
I don’t have the words to say how painful the COVID situation India is right now. All of us in india or the diaspora are affected in some way and scrambling around or mourning 💔
The culture of book banning hurts authors readers bookstores and communities. Just the fear someone would get mad about a brown woman writing children’s fantasy with environmental themes resulted in last minute tour cancellations. Our kids deserve the freedom to read 💔
@djolder
campus has been locked to only cuid holders for 2 wks, today faculty were deactivated from campus access and only students in certain dorms allowed in. Wkcr reporters confirmed that students they saw arrested were that — students. >15 years in higher ed and I will never recover
Doing a school visit the other day, happened to mention how I had writer's block since my dad passed in January (making the point that published authors get writer's block too) and this 9th grade girl looks at me dead on, says softly, "You know it's ok to take a break, right?"💙
I know no one is on this site any more but I’m really sick the week of my book launch and will probably have to cancel or make hybrid some events - I’m just devastated, feeling like my eco fantasy The Poison Waves won’t get to kids. Pre-orders boosts etc all deeply appreciated 🙏🏾
My forthcoming MG anticolonial fantasy adventure FORCE OF FIRE has a lot of influence from both the Indian War for Independence from the British and the Chittagong Armory Raid of 1930 - so I thought I'd do a little thread
"There’s this expectation that Asian American stories based on folktales will be exotic, mystical, magical & spiritual but not modern, funny, political, or scientific. I wanted to push back on this by having both folktales and string theory side by side"
New author photo who dis? (Nah 😂just showing off the fact I finally found a bright pink suit on sale- inner “I’m a boss lady but also a creative” achievement unlocked)💓
Hear me out: I know "tell your truth" but what if a grown up POC writer doesn't rehash the self hatred, internalized racism and bullying from growing up DECADES ago, instead celebrates awesome POC youth, imagines forward through fiction a loving world for them?

Many events to promote

are already or will be cancelled. If you want to support me or other March releases would you consider a. buying the book! b. sharing a review c. saying something on social media d. tellling a friend? Plus wash your hands, read a lot! ❤️🙏
Confession: I’ve not written anything creative since my father unexpectedly died in January. He was the most excited about my book career and now I’m scared I won’t ever be able to write (well)?
Actually - there goes my internal colonization again, it's not a little thing actually, it's a big thing. Deeply culturally ingrained. Like I can't watch a movie and not get grossed out if the characters have their shoes on. AND SHOES ON BEDS IN MOVIES! YUCK! 4/
I’m so excited to finally share the news of the next (previous?) story in the Kiranmala universe! Force of Fire is the story of Pinki, who eventually becomes Demon Queen, when she was a young demoness desperate to control her powerful magic! 😈 👑 🔥 🐍

Friends!! immediately drop Everything and See POLITE SOCIETY on Amazon! The Desi Jane Austen meets King Fu movie I never knew I needed! Amazing!!!!!! Please please now someone make Debating Darcy or Rosewood with this amazing aesthetic and sense of humor!
Don't judge. Some of my favorite childhood memories were reading Agatha Christie and watching Remington Steele detective shows with my best friends. We were so into becoming PIs (wasn't everyone?) her mom made us business cards! She just found them! I'm so 😂😂😍
in my Pride&Prejudice reimagining Lizzie and Darcy are brown, Desi, interfaith 🇮🇳🇵🇰, several side characters are POC/LGBTQ+ ... be mad if you must strange folks who thinks that we shouldn’t retell classics from the global majority but I’d rather you enjoy the humor wit, romance

Oh my goodness. I just realized I wrote almost 10,000 words in the last two days. Enforced butt in chair due to daughter being at hours and hours long dance practice far from home - was getting cranky near the end, but wow I did that! 😊🤓
Apropos of the NYT kidney story, the theme of my class tomorrow happens to be “whose story is it” and I’m having my students read Lucy Greeley‘s autobiography of a face against Anne Patchet’s essay about Lucy and Lucy‘s sisters’ essay about Anne. Messy writerly stuff for days
Fairness creams and colorism are a major, grotesque thing in South Asia. So of course I had to poke fun at them in Game of Stars (kiranmala book 2) “Dead and lovely: you’ll be so fair, even vultures will think you are dead”
Just to say that
#ownvoices
is a process it's not one thing, but it's also a political journey for those of us writing it - shoes in the house, who am I centering in my writing, what do I chose to say/not say, all this may change as we continue to decolonize our imaginations 10/
I nor anyone else can give you that permission, nor can we promise not to critique if you don't do it well. THAT'S NOT CENSORSHIP THO. So just stop with the permission asking - or, alternately, wonder why you feel so uncomfortable. Maybe there's something there to think on 4/
It's a ✨starred review✨ from Kirkus for THE CHAOS CURSE! This book is most ambitious of the trilogy... [it]reinforces...the series’ central themes: that stories are powerful, and that many stories are necessary to imagine a just future." 😭❤️

in speech and debate competitions. But when she meets Firoze Darcy, more than just her winning streak is at stake...her heart is, too.
@HornBook
Let's stop conflating writing from margin to center with writing from center to margin. Why r they different? BECAUSE POWER. Both require research, empathy, yes, but when you are writing for kids who haven't seen themselves positively repped, that is sacred responsibility 12/
Guess whose Debating Darcy ARCs just arrived????!!!!! This Feminist multicultural speech and debate Pride and Prejudice reimagining coming your way Feb 1 from
@Scholastic
Every time I speak out about censorship in book publishing, not compromising with book banners, I feel scared my tiny author career will vanish. But then I feel Babas hand on my shoulder and his voice in my ear “what’s wrong is wrong” and I try to walk a path he’d be proud of 💗
Also, it's one thing to populate your novel's world diversely, another to write a marginalized char as the voice of the novel/your protagonist. It's another thing to think about how your work might be taking room/space away from a marginalized author writing from that identity 7/
@Sayantani16
thank you for creating such an incredible Indian Princess Role Model for my Indian Princess. She went as KiranMala for favorite book character day.
😭😭😭😭😭😭Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. I just wish my Thakurma and Dida and Dadu were still here. I hope they know that I'm trying my best to honor them and all they taught me.
A book with a Bengali protagonist in a Bengali-inspired world full of Bengali folklore from my childhood is on the NYT bestsellers list!! This is honestly so much 😭 congratulations
@Sayantani16

A thread on Oppressive Asian Parents(TM): When I was trying to sell my demon-slaying Indian immigrant daughter fantasy THE SERPENTS SECRET, a lot of the rejection feedback I got was along the lines of:
[Turning Red spoilers down this thread, so beware] 1/
@HornBook
In the end, I think it's cringe worthy to call "writing outside your identity" somehow more brave than, asking yourself "Is this my story to tell? Am I the right person to tell it?" 11/
If you need a primer on how people from marginalized identities have to understand the majority culture to survive please read Dubois Double Consciousness or many other wonderful writers. Being from a centered identity and writing a marginalized character - ENTIRELY DIFFERENT 6/
Just your friendly periodic reminder that

B&N news today horrific for BIPOC middle grade authors. I just found out B&N won't carry hardback

So I just saw a tweet that was kind of mean and kind of directed at my forthcoming book (maybe?). But it kind of made me chuckle instead of hurting me because I guess this is the power of mid life? In this essay I will
Thanks for all the book birthday love Twitter family! I can’t believe Pinki is out in the world today and with ⭐️⭐️⭐️TY dear team

Someone asked my spouse if I just “hire people” to write my books. I haven’t stopped seething. Like oh yea I have a secret cavern full of book writing minions? Who also run on treadmills flinstones-style and power my house? In my spouse’s defense he’s pretty sorry he told me.
I just dropped this smol boy at college and am having feelings (nb - he's not actually this small. also - he is delighted. also - I'm alternately delighted for him and a blubbering mess)
But to get back to the Vulture article, "writing outside identity" is too often code for a more privileged person writing a less privileged person -- this article above conflates that with, say, a person of color writing from a racist person's POV - which is not the same 5/
It's in these details that representation happens, that humanity blossoms on the page. I'm just trying to be as true as possible, but it's not always clear cut and an ongoing process of unearthing/becoming/decolonizing
Cw: self pity. I waited so long to get published. Im grieving a huge personal loss. Im working as hard as I can to get my books out there. Yet just got the news my Jane Austen adaptations have done so stinky so far in sales (thanks, covid) that there might not be more 😭 1/2
I think about this stuff all day long as an ethnic studies faculty member - literally all day long, and yet here I was letting whiteness/Americanness/mainstreamness what have you be centered in my OWN DARN BOOK ABOUT A BROWN GIRL HEROINE 8/
"If there is no light, If the path before you rages with dark, then light your own heart on fire. Be the beacon. Be the spark.” My anticolonial/Bengali folk tale inspired MG fantasy from Scholastic FORCE OF FIRE is about voice, power and revolution!

stop giving these minority extremists airtime (also, they are not “activists”) My 18 yo kid reporter knows better she’s making a student doc about book banning focusing on resistance to banners and not giving the extremists oxygen. Do better!

Thinking about the dangers of gratitude in the publishing industry - and how it stops us from speaking out. How do we go from a mindset of scarcity to one of abundance? (Also - it’s “part and parcel” not whatever I’m saying here 😅)
