I was just told apparently it’s weird to have a “dump document” open where you copy and paste the things you’ve decided to cut from your written draft (right now, a motion) *just in case you need it later.* I save it in the file b/c I can’t let go.
Anyone else do this?
My personal opinion is that if you're in the Ohio legislature in a safe D seat and you're not out raising hell about what the Republicans are doing to our state, you're an ineffective lawmaker. Call it out. Name names. Advocate. We're too far behind to give a shit about decorum.
I forget where I saw it but someone suggested replacing COPS with a show that follows OSHA investigators around and calling it NSFW and 10/10 would love to watch.
I love Ohio with all my heart. I was born here. My family is here. My friends are here. My work is here. My people are here.
But some days it is hard to see what is going on politically and just... not hurt for Ohio.
You ever notice how so many interesting people have strong ties to Ohio (which has the 14th largest city in the country, Columbus, the 54th in Cleveland, the 65th in Cincinnati & 79th in Toledo) and yet everyone likes to act like it’s this random, sparsely populated place?
Wage theft doesn’t just happen when you don’t receive a paycheck.
Sometimes your paycheck isn’t in the right amount.
Sometimes you’re called an independent contractor when you’re really an employee.
Sometimes they tell you you’re salary, but the law says you should be hourly.
It still has not fully sunk in how wild yesterday’s Ohio House speaker election was. I know most people have their eye on the U.S. House speaker election, but truly, Ohio blew that out of the water and it was so quick.
Ohioans are tired. Trans children want to belong like any other child. To weaponize children for political gain is wrong.
I am proud to serve on a school board for a district that exhibits these values. All children deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
#YOUbelong
I think all high school students should take a one-day training where they learn their rights in the workplace.
Include: wage theft, appropriate deductions, injuries on the job, safe working conditions, community resources, section 7, and, generally, what a union is and does.
Always ironic to watch companies like these, many of whom sit on the board of the Ohio Restaurant Association which has been a hard YES for issue 1 (aka against ballot initiatives like abortion and minimum wage) march in a PRIDE parade while simultaneously hurting LGBTQ+ people.
People talk about "missing the East Coast" and "the culture" and "life on the water" and look, I too like Shadyside, and Steubenville, and Martins Ferry, but can we please remember that there is more to Ohio than just our coasts!!!!!!!!
I am skeptical of people who say their goal is to start their own non-profit, and I think it's merited. Because in my experience, many of those individuals have not attempted to get involved with the organizations already doing work in that space. It's like, an ego thing.
Last weekend I coached someone through a panic attack. We were at a local gay bar and they couldn’t stop thinking about the risk of a deadly hate shooting.
Yesterday, neo-nazi fascists marched through my city to intimidate and harass a cancelled drag story time.
Ohio Senator Schaffer, a Republican, introduced a child labor law bill that allows employers to use 14 & 15 year olds (aka 8TH GRADERS AND FRESHMAN) for longer and later hours during the school year. 🫠
Y’all know that child labor laws were put into place for a reason, right?
I’m upset to see, outlined on the school board’s website, that my taxpayer money may soon be going to pay a scab substitute teacher workforce to come in and provide virtual learning. That’s not who we are as a Columbus community. Our kids deserve better. We need a fair contract.
We know families have questions about the Columbus Board of Education's ongoing negotiations with the Columbus Education Association. Visit our Alternative Opening Information page to find everything you need to know.

INFO:
I reject praise for Kasich. He destroyed our state and local municipalities financially, among other egregious things, and isn’t liked by his own party. He’s not a “centrist.” He’s an extremist who set the stage for Trump in Ohio, fought unions, and is now begging Dems for a job.
Ohio is one of the most aggressive U.S. states at purging voters off the voter rolls--and sometimes, mistakes can be made even if you have voted in the last couple years.
If you didn't vote in August, I'd suggest you check your voter registration here:
COLUMBUS, Ohio—Thousands of inactive Ohio voters were quietly purged from the state’s voter rolls last month at the direction of Secretary of State Frank LaRose after some voters had already begun casting ballots in the November election
by Jeremy Pelzer
Someone tried to accuse a colleague of only wanting to be on the school board because of the money. It’s a trope I’ve heard before.
Y’all do realize in Ohio, school board members make $125 per public meeting, max $5,000 per year, right?
Not sure who needs to hear this, but you should wear you mask when going through the drive-thru. You’re not in an invisible force field just because you’re in your car, and the worker who is serving you shouldn’t have to deal with you unmasked.
One of the 🥰 best parts of my weekend 🥰 was
@HopeFromOhio
marching in the 4th of July parade and yelling at the top of her lungs "VOTE NO ON AUGUST 8th" and a number of voters responding "WHAT IS HAPPENING ON AUGUST 8TH?" which prompted great conversations!
TALK TO FOLKS!
Transparency and accountability are necessary for the trust we need between the board, our staff, our students, and our community.
I can only speak for myself and am not speaking on behalf of the board.
I'm so proud of the repro organizers and community leaders who collected petitions, organized and trained volunteers, and raised money to get reproductive justice rights on the ballot. I'm excited to talk to folks about the amendment this fall!
It's my birthday! Today I've been alive for OVER ONE BILLION seconds!! (I am 32 today)
For perspective, I hit the point of being alive for ONE MILLION seconds when I was 11 *days* old.
Billionaires MUST pay their fair share. People are starving, losing homes, this is absurd!!
@erasmuse
My word program does that for me, luckily, so I guess I have both. When I’m really anxious about it, I email drafts to myself just so I know I can recover it in a meltdown.
I grew up a three-sport athlete and played with lots of trans girls and women at all levels (youth sports, HS & college) and it was NEVER a problem!
Ohio Republicans, stop sensationalizing human beings to appeal to homophobes and transphobes. It’s gross and it’s embarrassing.
I know plenty of folks that live in a town/part of the city where the nearest “grocery store” is the Family Dollar or the gas station. Even when folks are lucky to have transportation that provides a wider range of food options, folks get priced out of stuff.
OUT. OF. TOUCH.
John Mackey, the founder of Whole Foods, blames obesity on bad decisions by consumers rather than lack of access to healthy food. "It’s less about access and more about people making poor choices, mostly due to ignorance."
Has anyone heard from Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack on whether his office plans to enforce the 6-week abortion ban (and any abortion ban)? As we know, prosecutors have discretion!
Would love to be reading or hearing a statement by the time of the rally tomorrow at 11am!
So I have a dog on vacation which means everyone wants to talk to us. Whenever we get asked “where are you from?” and we say “Ohio,” we get a LOT of “I’ve met so many people from Ohio!”
When will this country recognize, you cannot escape us, everyone cool has roots from Ohio!!!
After serious consideration of what was best for the district and our students, I decided to share the document.
Our work in this district is too important for these kinds of divisive and absurd tactics.
Live in Ohio? Lost your ID? Don’t have one? Want to vote?

Election Day in 1 week!
Columbus Ohio is about to look and feel very different. We need our transit systems to be ready so that ALL workers have real opportunity to take the good jobs coming in.
A ceremonial groundbreaking for what Ohio officials have called the “Silicon Heartland” will happen in Licking County next week.
@joingles
reports the clock is already ticking for state and city leaders to get ready.
Analysis of Ohio’s universal voucher “Backpack Bill” says if all 185,400 private school, homeschooled, nonchartered nonpublic students get vouchers, it will cost Ohio $1.13 billion in the first budget year, but it suggests they might not all take those taxpayer-paid vouchers
I am begging you to set aside your savior mentality and just listen to the people who have been doing this work day in and day out.
We don’t need you to be “an Underground Railroad.” We need you to openly march with us, call your legislators & friends, donate to abortion funds.
🍎 Thank you everyone who signed my petition to get on the ballot and run for the Columbus City School Board! HUGE thank you to those friends/family that helped me circulate them.
📋 We needed 300 signatures and we collected over 1,200! 👀 Incredible energy! We are so grateful.

I have that too! Always concerned that I’m going to have to try to research again and not find the case because I found it via a 2am rabbit hole search one time.
🎉 It’s teacher appreciation week and I’m THRILLED to announce that my campaign for the Columbus City School Board has been endorsed by the union representing many of our classroom heroes, the Columbus Education Association. 🎉 What an honor!
TONIGHT
@ColumbusGov
City Council will vote on the wage theft ordinance that Columbus so desperately needs. An ordinance protects ALL workers, including those most affected and hurt by wage theft (low wage/immigrant workers).
Stand with us. Retweet your support.

BREAKING: Over 4,000 Volkswagen workers in Tennessee just joined the
@UAW
in a landslide.
They’re the first American workers to win a union at a non-union car company in decades.
This historic victory will change the auto industry, and the future of American labor.
I am really concerned that this completely out-of-reality suggestion gets taken seriously. You are going to profit off a bunch of people until 2am, load them up with liquor, and then shut down the real opportunity they have to put food/water into their body & rest before leaving?
For the love of God, please stop telling people without college degrees or higher that they’re dumb. Not incurring debt to take an underpaid job is pretty damn smart, and there are so many factors into who pursues higher education... honestly saying this makes you sound dumb.
The rise in retail theft has been all over the news lately, with video showing organized groups caught on camera raiding stores and walking off with thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.
I was not in any meeting where this document was shared. I did not have any part in drafting it, and I did not know of its existence until it was later shared with me. I was appalled and offended when I read it.
So
@tiktok_us
banned my video about the know your rights handbook we released, stating that it violates community guidelines.
How tik tok?! By informing workers about their rights under law? What?!
I’m at
@ColumbusHealth
waiting my turn to get my booster COVID-19 shot and there are SO MANY people, especially kids. Started tearing up when one mom walked up and was bawling, talking about how excited and relieved she is that her kids can finally get the shot. It hit me.
Excited to share that I was selected to the 2022 Ohio Super Lawyers Rising Star list! ⭐️ This is my second year in a row. The Rising Star award is reserved for only 2.5% of lawyers each year. I feel so grateful that I have a job I love doing--kicking ass for the working class.
Like, yes we have lots of farm land and we have amazing hills and forests and woods... but also we’re 35th in the country in square miles but 7th in population.
Here’s my quick and easy voter guide for all the non-candidate things on the ballot this fall:
Statewide Issue 1: No
Statewide Issue 2: No
All Columbus City issues/Bond initiative: Yes
I cannot condemn these people in strong enough words. Their whole purpose is to intimidate and cause harm to good and kind people—& they’re too coward to even show their faces. Be gone.
Community, please speak out! Those targeted really need to see the love & support right now.
@GrimKim
Law school. We got into an argument in class one day and I didn’t like him. The next day he came in and told me a Spanish joke. We went to the class happy hour, talking forever and laughing a lot. Then we went out for tacos, and we still do. Married this year (4 yrs later).
If DeWine pulls a Kasich and screws Ohio out of a C-to-C train again I am going to lose it. The train is incredibly popular. We need to be running ALL the pressure campaign ads.
Response from DeWine spox to C-bus Amtrak dreams:
"We are reviewing the passenger rail related portions of the recent federal infrastructure bill. As such, I do not expect any passenger rail announcements in the near future"
In the rankings of Taco Bell’s in Columbus, Whitehall is a clear first but Hudson and High is a very close second... regardless of what comes next we can all agree German Village Taco Bell is dead last. I will be taking no questions at this time.
I went to a friend from law school’s law firm office and I saw her name on the plaque outside and I teared up. And then when she was taking my petition to run for school board she teared up. It’s so good to have friends who cheer you on and are supportive through it all.
🚨 New headshot just dropped! 🚨
📚 I would love to see you on January 9th when I get sworn in to the Columbus City School Board. I look forward to serving our Columbus children, staff, and community.
Hey Ohio— can we once and for all admit that John Kasich was useless, and maybe hurtful, to our chances here? Can we finally kick him to the curb where he belongs? That union buster has no place on or around any of our work.
Young people want strong, well-funded transit. We want well-funded schools. We want progressive policies. You want to attract more folks to Ohio? Put money toward these things.
It’s very frustrating to me that the people who are required to work in-person are some of the same people at the end of the line for COVID vaccines. We MUST prioritize our essential workforce.
Equitable and just vaccine distribution is key to our economic recovery.
@umCrystal
Right! Rarely do I ever need something on here but it happens enough that I’ve decided “I’m not going all the way down that rabbit hole again.”
PSA: It's not your job to tell workers in unions when they should or should not strike. They're fully capable of weighing the decision themselves. Unions are democratic organizations that center member voices.
It's your job to support them in their struggle & uplift their fight.
Today my Op Ed published in

Employees are looking to unionize at a Westerville Starbucks. According to Workers United, an overwhelming majority of employees at the Starbucks located on South State Street have signed union cards.
@VoxPrudentia
Sounds like a lot of people keep it pretty organized. I can, depending on the length of the memo, but most of the time I don’t. To anyone else it’s a page of random cases and excerpts, but to me it’s a security blanket.
Your policies matter. We love seeing the allyship out and in full force, but we want to see you do better by being ACTUAL allies through the policies you choose to put your time and money behind.
Always disappointing to see absurd positions like “deleting” a company that supports thousands of Union jobs nationwide, brews its beer here in Ohio, and delivers union. Those are working Americans you’re affecting but ok, go on and be mad that companies want to be inclusive.
for the people in the back: UNIONS ARE JUST GROUPS OF PEOPLE WHO COME TOGETHER TO FIGHT FOR BETTER WAGES, WORKING CONDITIONS, AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT. LITERALLY JUST GROUPS OF WORKERS.
🗣🗣 $10/hour IS NOT A LIVING WAGE
$15/hour is already the compromise. It’s well below what the minimum wage would be if it simply kept up with inflation.
$10/hour at 40 hrs/week, NO WEEKS OFF is $20,800. You’re telling me that’s a “living wage”? 🥴
Every worker who tests positive for COVID-19 should have paid leave from their work. We are in a global pandemic and this is absolutely necessary.
Because we don't have this, many workers will return to work today out of necessity, infecting other people. It's not their fault.
🤯 The Ohio Legislature does remember that we have child labor laws FOR A REASON right? Stop adopting the bosses talking points. There is not a labor shortage, it’s a wage, benefits and profit sharing shortage. There is a lack of childcare & a lack of support for working people.
I texted my 12-year-old niece and said “good job on your test” and she goes “how did you know?” and I said “I know everything” … and then she slammed me with the “explain NFT’s to me.” 🙃
Touché, kid. Touché.
Being a young, union side lawyer requires constantly declining calls and LinkedIn message requests from recruiters for the employer side asking you to switch sides for a job that pay double your current salary.
My uncle has been battling COVID-19 for the last week or so and this morning was rushed to the hospital. He likely contracted it at church. His wife and daughter are quarantined and scared.
Please do not let up. Masks. Distance. Nothing risky. 😷 It’s killing our families.
Potentially big news on education overhaul: Jessica Voltolini from ODE tells court that her agency, as it exists now, will cease to exist at midnight regardless of the restraining order.
