Thread: A Map of Rugby
There's a lot of terminology in rugby that is taken for granted and isn't always explained. I thought I would try and help.
Different teams/countries will use different language so this isn't a dictionary. But should help you find the way!

It's hardly a gotcha is it from Musk.
"We won't give blue ticks to people unless they pay"
"We won't pay"
"Ha! We will take it from you then....I really am very smart"
I will say as well, that in the negativity of all this, referee Aurelie Groizeleau deserves enormous credit for just taking the appropriate action under that unreasonable pressure.
There is a lot Eddie Jones gets wrong and he correctly gets criticism, but, he has been England Head Coach in every 6N from 2016, that's 7, and they have won 3. That is the most of any nation and reached a World Cup final, the best of any 6N nation. The sacking calls are bizarre.
France have largely nailed rugby really. Three Autumn Internationals in three different stadiums, all three sell-outs I think? The Top14 is selling out stadiums, ProD2 is booming, even three/four steps down the pyramid the attendances are good.
Absolutely brilliant game. Maybe the greatest final of all time. That last 20 minutes were some of the best rugby I've ever seen.
Ardie Savea and Mark Telea don't deserve to be on the losing side. They were truly astonishing.
Well done Springboks. Excellent all tournament.
One of my favourite flags, on the bottom. Sadly, as rugby fans will know, that is the flag of the European Georgia not the Democratic voting state of Georgia....
Trump supporters aren't bright at all.
Assuming Fiji win tonight, then the Rugby World Cup Shield would be:
QF1: 🇦🇺 v 🇼🇸
QF2: 🏴 v 🇺🇾
QF3: 🇯🇵 v 🇬🇪
QF4: 🇮🇹 v 🇹🇴
Predicted Semi-Finals
SF1: 🇦🇺 v 🏴
SF2: 🇯🇵 v 🇮🇹
Predicted Final
🏴 v 🇮🇹
It is a perfect bit of defensive work from LRZ. First to make the catch and then to get the turnover. Look how he catches the La Roux with his right hand on right shoulder and then has right hand on left side. Clear release. His coaches won't be calling him out on this.
This is an incredible three minutes of analysis. Not just a great series of clips to show how SA broke down the NZ attack but a great example of good punditry. That's three minutes of intense detail that is somehow not rushed and also clearly explained to any viewer.
Had a chance to breakdown one of the best defensive displays I have ever seen for

We are at the end of probably the best ever World Cup, certainly the best ever knockout stage.
Yet most of the discussion has either been about referees or people deciding there's no way casual fans can enjoy it.
What can we learn from dancing?

The World Rugby rankings aren't perfect but are the best we have. But, I think there's room for my ranking of - group countries together according to if you wouldn't be surprised if they beat each other....
🇫🇷🇳🇿🇿🇦🇮🇪
🏴🇦🇺🇦🇷
🏴🏴🇯🇵
🇮🇹🇫🇯🇬🇪🇼🇸
🇹🇴🇷🇴🇪🇸🇵🇹🇺🇸🇺🇾
Scotland v South Africa tomorrow should be at 5.15 in the dark with the teams walking out to a light show and a lone bagpiper on the roof. Not at 1pm.....
Not to rub salt in the wounds. Here's a random draw if it was done based on rankings a year ago. I will say, I'm not a draw conspiracist though:
Pool A: 🇫🇷 , 🇦🇺 , 🏴, 🇬🇪 , 🇨🇱
Pool B: 🏴 , 🇳🇿 , 🇯🇵 , 🇹🇴 , 🇳🇦
Pool C: ☘️ , 🏴 , 🇼🇸 , 🇮🇹 , 🇺🇾
Pool D: 🇿🇦 , 🇦🇷 , 🇫🇯 , 🇷🇴 , 🇵🇹
Woodward saying England need to keep ball in hand is madness. He's literally the old boy in the blazer who is 9 ales deep and has unfortunately chosen to sit behind you.
Thread: Understanding Rugby after the two Lions Tests
Rugby is complicated and often poorly explained in mainstream media. Although there are many amazing analysts and coaches on here doing stuff for free.
This thread explains some fundamentals.

Someone just told me that Smith got POTM. I assumed he was joking.....that's mental. Like unhinged. Itoje was the outstanding English player. Dombrandt up there. England won because of their pack .
Thread: The Free Agent Job Listings
It's sadly that time of year where players get released from their clubs and potentially their professional rugby dream is over.
So, let's try and get them jobs! Listen up coaches, free recruitment analysis below.

This scrum is a thing of beauty for Wainwright. Stays strong and square until Mchunu walks around the corner for the penalty which leads to the Welsh match winning try.

I love rugby and I follow people who love rugby and I have a genuine care about the quality of a club's third choice hooker.....but I'm not normal. The majority of normal people couldn't name 5 England rugby players I reckon. So names on the shirts is a good step.
Two brilliant games. Both Ireland and England excellent but England deservedly win. I expect quite hefty amounts of humble pie to be served in the Twickenham press room.
Feyi-Waboso was brilliant, Earl (out of position at 8) stunning. Lawrence excellent.

Very ugly stuff and hard to defend, especially when you have seen the clip of the player's head hitting the floor. A game just isn't important enough for medics to be this partisan.

I had really hoped this would be a thread I wouldn't have to write. Sadly it's come to that point though. I've included some explanation about why I'm writing this below and hope people understand the rationale.

I get that people are sad Brown's Quins career ends like that but it's madness to suggest Premiership rugby should rescind it so he can play one final game.
It's not an exaggeration to say that Tommy Taylor is lucky not to have lost his sight from that. 6 weeks isn't long enough
Very excited to say, that as of Friday I've been brought in by a player and his agent to use my data, metrics, and analysis to get him a bigger contract and play a tiny role in getting him on a plane, or train, to France 2023.
Other agent and player enquiries welcome....
Thread: Quick one on England's defence.
There's a few different ways to defend. Some are high risk and some are passive. The new England defence is directly taken from what South Africa did in the latest World Cup.

Seen tweets about innocent Sarries' employees suffering if they get relegated. Every time somebody gets relegated jobs are at risk. Why are we okay when the relegated team is the 12th best team at playing rugby but not when they're the 12th best at following rules?
This is ridiculous from Reffell. Makes it from 15m to 15m to then turn the ball over. A proper fetcher, when everyone else is heading backwards to set for the next phase, Reffell is going to hunt down the ball. Astonishing turnover and workrate of a small town.

Analysis Advent Day 6: Hitting Rucks
James Cronin is the best ruck hitter in the Premiership. He is the only man to hit 100+ rucks with no ineffective hits and no penalised hits. How does he do it?

ITV: We began the day talking about Marcus Smith so let's end the day talking about him.
We also spent all the middle bit of the day talking about him as well.
If you ever worry that you don't know much about rugby, just remember that after this match there will still be some people who think Ford should be dropped.
Game of the World Cup so far there. Probably all thought it was.
Fiji can beat everyone else in the group
Wales looked, until the last 15 mins, the best they've looked in Gatland era part deaux
Thread: Men in Vannes
The non-British Celts have had an incredible season in ProD2. They are guaranteed a place in the play-offs and they've won seven on the trot. They've achieved this with a pretty interesting tactical quirk.

Dreadful game but quietly fascinating....neither side can make any progress with ball in hand. England solving that by dropping goals from anywhere on the pitch.
But they're two sides devoid of any attacking endeavour beyond drop goals and long penalties
Things like this are so weird. England got to a World Cup final under Eddie Jones, won two Six Nations, won tours abroad and were generally very successful. He will go down as one of England's best ever coaches.
The passing of a widely loved 96 year old woman seems to be cause to celebrate her life. Decisions to cancel sport don't seem to fit with that celebration. Hopefully sense is seen.
If I were showing an example of a seatbelt tackle that on Carberry would be it.
You can't tackle above the line of the shoulders...the only thing above where he tackled is air....
Karl Dickson is a good example of confident and often wrong
The draw gets the blame for everything - the Tories are claiming it for by election losses.
But, there are four dominant teams in the World. So even in a 'perfect' draw you'd get four walkover QFs and possibly 2 great SFs. Here we get 4 very good/great QFs. Which feels better
This is astonishing given Ryan Jones was Powell's captain with Wales. First of all it's wrong. Second of all, what kind of person hears someone has dementia and goes - "Well, he had that coming".
I'm completely at a loss about why, following a year which featured probably the greatest world cup ever and two of the greatest matches ever, there's an endless stream of articles about what's wrong with it.

Sonny Bill "It's disappointing that a refs decision has potentially impacted the rest of the game".
No...the decision of the player has made the ref make a decision. Why do people still fail to get this??
Fair to say Wayne Barnes has been the best referee rugby has ever had.
He has also managed to come across as supremely nice during the whole period and was the instigator of a lot of the good communication we now see among international refs.
Go well in retirement!
Made the mistake of looking at the BBC Sport comments. Loads of stuff about how this England game plan is killing their interest.
England just scored 30pts in a quarter final. I think these comments are written by people who have no interest in actually watching the game.
This is complete bollocks. As any of us who have spent time recently rewatching old games can attest, they weren't better. They were slower, less skillful, and had more mistakes. Analysts and specialist coaches have improved all elements of the game. Barnes has run out of ideas.
Anyone sending threats is completely unhinged. Whether you think this is a misunderstanding or something that happened, the way Curry dealt with it was exemplary.
He spoke to the ref, got a slightly lacking answer, and got on with the next hour of the game.
2023 Free Agents List
It's that time of year again. This time last year I pulled together a Free Agents list after a conversation with now retired Ross Neal over in Seattle. It was probably the thing I'm proudest of. Sadly, there's a bigger need to go again this year.

England have played 160 mins of rugby - conceded a single try and have a positive pts diff of +39
The big concern last week was the lack of tries. They just got the bonus point tonight.
I fear for many, the narrative has already been set and the reality doesn't matter.
Interesting in the wake of the Farrell news to see trolls get the blame. Obviously, he has been relentlessly trolled and people who do that are complete bellends.
But their reach is miniscule compared to national papers who have consistently gone after him.

I don't think it's favoured one team or the other (brace for hoards of people saying it's favoured the oppo) but there are breakdown interpretations which exist only in the mind of Mike Adamson.....
I was out for this game earlier...but...THEY WORE THE SAME FUCKING KITS THAT CAUSED THE ISSUES LAST WEEK!? Why is it exclusively idiots making decisions in rugby?
He started the move, he'll finish the move ✨
Jamison Gibson-Park completes a scintillating
@leinsterrugby
score which started inside their own half.
Top class! 👏

My two pennies worth...
Completely fine to give players targets that you expect them to hit and drop them if they don't hit those targets. However, I can't fathom the logic of revealing that he missed targets rather than just not selecting him in the RWC squad.
The AIs and 6Ns signals the start of the season where actual journalists, who presumably have an interest in growing the sport, take the piss out of infrequent watchers of rugby.
If you only watch one rugby game a year, no problem at all, as far as I'm concerned, all are welcome
Something unique to rugby, is that after compelling matches you end up with a load of fans who unilaterally decide that yes it was good but there's no way it'll appeal to casual fans.
This is unique to rugby...no other sports talk themselves down like this.
This makes no difference if it doesn't impact you and a huge difference if it does.
If this makes you angry, then you're akin to a toddler furious that other toddlers are enjoying the soft play when he is as well.
From January, Six Nations teams will be mandated to avoid kit clashes which could negatively impact colour blind viewers.
The ruling from Six Nations will ask visiting teams to change kits where a colour match has been identified, this means in 2025 Ireland will wear a change
I might be in the minority, but it appears Farrell has got the punishment that anyone with his record would receive.
"Man gets punishment in line with what anyone else would receive in shocking RFU conspiracy"
Very bad look from the English medical team who are getting in the face of the match referee who is just keeping the player's safe.
Does not look like the medical team actually have their player's safety at the forefront there.
I took a look at that excellent Ben White try from yesterday's Calcutta Cup clash. Features some interesting, but legal, lineout quick thinking and tactical intrigue.

Can we mute Dallaglio?? It's like watching with an English child who recently learnt some, but not all, of the rules. And who, crucially, is yet to learn that sometimes, just sometimes, your team make a mistake.
The joy of rugby, and it's true of other sports of course, is how many different ways there are to play it.
Flat track 52-50 matches are fun, tight physical 15-12 matches are fun, defensively scrambling 9-6 matches are fun.
Embracing all the styles means you're never bored

A significant issue with rugby is people's inability to accept that great players can have bad games and decent players can have great games.
The same people who hated EJ for dropping young players are now calling for the dropping of young players.

I'm buying some new rugby boots and just found out that for £5 you can get a flag added. I assumed it would be England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and so couldn't be bothered. Turns out you can have any country....
Now I just have to decide between Uganda or Eswatini
This is so good from Halaholo. Runs the loop then targets Van der Merwe to force the winger to stay tight and create the overlap which, in turn, forces Hogg into the line which creates the space for LRZ to kick over. There's no space to do this without Halaholo's work.
Thread: How to get the right men to the right rucks
How did Wales succeed at creating carrying opportunities for their best players against Scotland but fail against Ireland? Plus, why are Francis and Wyn Jones so crucial?

Lot of people saying that the ref made a mistake not immediately wanting to red card Haouas. That's what the assistant refs are there for.
I know people love attacking refs. But if the outcome is the correct one, do we really care about the process?
Obviously I think that SA to the 6Ns is a bad idea.
So often, the decision makers in rugby, seem to be people who are listening to good ideas through a well insulated wall. Things like a southern 6Ns with Japan and Fiji added somehow ends up with this nonsense.
