I just wanted to extend a note of appreciation to all of you on this page. I never dreamed of all this attention to my passion, so thank you for the comments, support, messages, etc. I love sharing my adventures with you all and plan to keep doing this as long as I can.
This was some very unexpected news today. I got an email this morning that the Honourable Minister Timothy Halman, Minister of the Department of Environment and Climate Change, wants to meet with me in May to officially recognize me for my work cleaning up Nova Scotia’s waterways
Another huge haul of bottles out of the Sackville River tonight! Even found another shopping cart, and then filled that up with bottles underwater (that’ll be a funny video when I release it 😂)
Thanks to buddy Lynden for joining and helping make this river even cleaner.
I received a message from a lady who lost her phone to the lake off her dock and asked if I'd try to get it back for her as her bank cards were in the case. I'm thankful to report that I found it fairly quickly! 😀
What a day! Thank you Iain & Sheri for taking my boys and I out to McNabs Island on your boat. I found so many bottles and took out at least 100lbs of trash today. Excited to share some of the cool finds from this dive later this week.
I am very, very excited to share this news with you all. The documentary Saltwater Souvenirs made about me last year was entered into the Sugar Loaf Film Festival in New York earlier this year and I just found out it WON for Best Environmental Short Documentary.
I got a message a couple weeks ago from a mom who said that her boy had lost his favourite hat. I had a head cold at the time and couldn’t dive for it. I wasn’t sure if it’d be covered in silt and thankfully it wasn’t! Always feels good to return something that was once lost.
Here's a new one for you all! I found this small dairy bottle while diving tonight that reads "Stillicious The Chocolate Dairy Drink" and the back has the year 1928 embossed.
If anyone knows more about this, let me know!
Hello, 311? I’ve got a lot of trash waiting for ya. This took me an hour to take out tonight of the Sackville River. They said it was two weeks to come get it, which is way too long!
I got a message from a follower named Greg this afternoon who graciously shared these images with me of Titanic’s sister ship Olympic docked in Halifax in 1916-1917.
It’s incredibly cool to see such historical snapshots, offering a glimpse into the past of our city.
It’s pretty hard to contain my excitement when finding something old underwater. Most of the time it’s garbage so when I see something like this late 1800s ginger beer stoneware bottle, it’s a really great feeling.
Every day is
#EarthDay2024
to me, but today, let’s all commit to restoring our planet, whether it’s something simple as picking up garbage on the side of the road, cleaning up the ocean or just reducing our carbon footprint. We all have a responsibility to make this world better.
It's always fun to get back to where I grew up! My friend and I explored this part of Governors Lake in Timberlea for an incredible underwater cleanup and took out so much trash, which always leads to the most asked question I get: "What do you do with it all?"
Happy Friday! I've been thinking about a few things and want to share this thread.
I can take out garbage all day long but the real concern for me now lies in preventing trash from entering our waterways in the first place.
What a dive! I found so many interesting bottles including a few I’ve never seen before. One in particular stood out to me, that read “Camp Coffee.”
The concentrated syrup is flavoured with coffee and chicory and was first produced in 1876 by Paterson & Sons Ltd, in Glasgow.
Another successful cleanup dive with more debris removed from our ocean. Thank you Iain & Sheri for taking me out in your boat this afternoon. The boys had a great time too 😊
I had a great time exploring the coast of south west Cape Breton today. River Bourgeois ended up being the place I found the most things in the water and while I checked out the canal in St. Peter’s, I didn’t see much at all, and instead was impressed by the cleanliness
A HUGE thanks to this group of wonderful humans for joining me in the Halifax Harbour today to clean up our shores! Together we removed six bags of debris and prevented it from going in the ocean.
While diving underwater, I discovered this W.H. Donovan ginger beer bottle, which dates from 1890 to the early 1910s. William H. Donovan, the manufacturer, operated his soft drink and beverage company on Granville Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
What a way to end the day. I got the opportunity to speak at a local Girl Guides of Canada group tonight about what I get to do, and the girls had so many great questions, including “Do you live underwater?” 😆
I feel very honoured to be able to do what I do.
My first cleanup dive of the Sackville River tonight! A lot has changed after the winter season along with the spring floods and all this was in a spot I’d been before and hadn’t seen anything. The work continues!
The bottle on the left was in fresh water for over 160 years and the other in the ocean for the same length of time. Amazing the difference and that they both survived for so long.
Torpedo bottles, also known as Hamilton bottles, were used for aerated or carbonated water.
While diving recently, I came across this peculiar glazed ink bottle and learned it has a rich history. Doulton began in 1815 in Lambeth, London, as a partnership between John Doulton, Martha Jones, and John Watts.
A big thank you to the Sackville Rivers Association for having me speak at your AGM. It’s cool to see the artifacts I pulled from the river on display!
It’s been almost four years since this dive and photo at the end went viral and gave birth to the “Saltwater Sean” moniker. I am beyond grateful for all the opportunities it’s lead to, people I’ve met and putting me on a clear path to what I want to accomplish - cleaner waters!
I've been sitting on this news for a couple months and am so excited to finally share that the Suzuki company has graciously provided a boat, engine & trailer to me to help with my cleanup efforts & exploration. I'm still pinching myself.
I want to add some context to this. Our son is autistic and has the purest heart I know. So, his spelling may not be as strong but he’s trying his best and his desire to want good for those around him makes me proud to be his dad.
Uranium glass is a vibrant, fluorescent glass made with uranium, usually up to 2%, but sometimes as much as 25%. Popular in Europe and North America, it’s often used for decorative tableware and household items. Production dropped in the 1940s due to uranium shortages during WW2.
My first red carpet experience. Congratulations Sean MacDougall on winning for Best Environmental Documentary for Saltwater Souvenirs at the Sugar Loaf Film Festival. Thanks for believing in what I do! Really glad Ruth was able to come with me too. ❤️

@CTVNews
National: Diving for trash
A man in Nova Scotia is gaining a lot of attention for his effort to pick up trash people have thrown into the ocean.
@SarahPlowmanCTV
reports.
Prospect is one of my favourite places to dive in the warmer months. I went out yesterday evening with my sons to capture some aerial footage of this peaceful & serene fishing village.
I’ve been sitting on this news for a while, but I’m excited to announce I was a guest on the Tonight Show with
@jimmyfallon
earlier this month! It was so great to speak with Jimmy. Here’s a clip of our conversation.
Good morning and Happy Saturday Saltwater Fam 🤿

I just completed my first dive adventure of 2024 out in Kearney Lake. You won’t believe what I found right away! Video and photos to come soon, but right now I need to warm up 🥶
Did a cleanup in the Sackville River and found a very old Halifax bottle doing it! A neat piece of history. A Thomas Nash Superior Lemonade soda squat that was bottled on Blowers Street in Halifax from 1859 to 1872.
