I’m both excited and nervous to share my new article with the JICJ, which is the first publication related to my PhD research on accountability for digital harm under ICL:
It is extremely difficult to sit here and try and finish a PhD in int law while the images of murdered children keep piling up and world leaders continue to do nothing (and actually even support it), and *still* no ICC arrest warrants - the legitimacy is quickly eroding away.
Apparently I'm an 'emerging voice' in the field of international law?? Just got accepted to my first ever panel at a big event and the imposter syndrome is *real* 😳 see you in October, NYC!!
A drunk girl at the pub last night asked me what I did and when I replied with PhD she said “ooh women in STEM”. I said it was in law, then she paused before repeatedly shouting “women in STEAM!” (+A for arts). I’m not sure about it but 10/10 wholesome experience nonetheless
There are few things cooler for a PhD in ICL than seeing your name mentioned by the ICC Prosecutor. Thank you so much
@KarimKhanQC
for engaging with my work, and check out the (very interesting!) chapter here:
Some good news to share - I've just been awarded the Modern Law Review Scholarship for my PhD thesis on accountability for digital harms under ICL! Special thanks to my supervisors
@CarlaFerstman
and
@Daragh_Murray
for their support 🤗
My profile is now listed on

Delighted to announce
@SZarmsky
will be joining

. She will handle the Events & Announcements post -- and will hopefully write substantive posts as well. Our deepest thanks to John Heieck for his three years of hard labour.
Honored to have my first journal article published in the JICJ Special Issue on New Technologies alongside other incredible authors! Check out my piece on the use of digital reconstructions as evidence in international criminal law here:
Some exciting news - I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining
@hrcberkeley
as a visiting researcher in January for the Spring 2023 semester - my first time living in the US in 5 years! Thanks so much to
@KAlexaKoenig
for this opportunity, so excited to work with the HRC team! 💙💛
I’m just a girl, begging those (typically white men) who gain control of the mic at conference Q&As to first ask themselves whether they really have a question or if it’s just a 10 minute comment
All jokes aside, it is really remarkable to see clips of ICJ proceedings going viral on TikTok. Despite issues with spreading misinfo, social media is also playing a key role in spreading awareness about international law, particularly to younger generations.
Had a great time presenting on my experience as a PhD candidate and the use of open source evidence in ICL today at the human rights investigations lab seminar at
@hrcberkeley

Conference organizers: not charging PhDs is great (& should be the norm) but doesn’t help much if we can’t afford travel/accommodation (and esp those who need visas, childcare etc) - pls don’t get rid of the hybrid option! Sad to be missing out on some great events bc of this
Can confirm that 'I'll figure it out at the end' was not a good strategy for footnotes and cross-referencing in a PhD thesis, pls send thoughts & prayers
The dilemma of a PhD with a deadline: if I work at home, I’ll be too tempted to clean the whole flat to procrastinate. If I work from somewhere else, I’ll buy too many overpriced coffees that I can’t afford. 🥲
Very excited to have my first blog piece published by
@opiniojuris
! Check out how you can help to document

for the

movement & accountability purposes.
Tired of seeing mostly white men refer to their research/arguments as new or unique when women or other underrepresented groups in the field have done it before - also, it’s okay if it isn’t completely new, we can all provide new takes on things…just give credit where it’s due!
I've repeatedly been told that the transition from Master's to PhD level comes once you are comfortable speaking as yourself and sharing your own thoughts instead of citing every sentence - I finally have done this for the first time in my new draft and it feels *strange* 🫢
I’ve been sitting with this thread for a while now and am still nervous about tweeting it, but at this point it’s clear that something needs to be said - we need to talk about credit for work, especially for interns and ECRS. 🧵
Please remember to consider victims and their families before resharing gruesome footage, especially when victims' faces are clearly visible or they are unclothed - what's going on deserves attention but should not come at the cost of degrading those who have been wounded/killed
Very excited to be starting my visiting stay at
@hrcberkeley
today! Also thrilled that there is an office puppy, and I have my own office for the first time ever! Sorry Essex, I might never come back..
I'm very excited to be convening a symposium on an issue I care a lot about--fairness, equality, and diversity within the OSINT community. If you're interested in contributing, the call for submissions is here!
2022 was a difficult year but also lots to be grateful for - I survived my first full year as a PhD, started teaching, travelled to 5 countries, spoke at 3 conferences, & finished with a move overseas. Excited to see what 2023 brings, starting with a move to Berkeley next week 🤗
This conference was a special one being so close to home - my mom & best friend have supported me (remotely) throughout my LLM and PhD so far, and today they got to see me present. So grateful for my support network and to the ILW for this opportunity! See you next time NYC!
This timing is very much going to show which IL scholars on here have gone quiet about the case tomorrow (& its respective situation) and come right back to discuss the case next week
PRESS RELEASE: the

Coming tomorrow! We take a look at some of the most daring technological developments coming to a courtroom near you. Together with a panel of experts we ask how virtual reality could find place in international courtrooms and how to best manage its impact.
Read my new piece if you want to cry about a potential future world run by Mark Zuckerberg, or if you just want a recap before next season comes out 💁🏻♀️
This was extremely hard to fit into one blog post but I had a blast writing it! Thanks again to
@Alonso_GD
and
@nyuiilj
for having me back this year! 🧙🏻♀️
This is a great initiative and it's good to see the continuing development of OTP Policy Papers on important new topics, but... are there not more pressing issues right now???

Next week will be one year since I moved to a new country to start my PhD and I’ll be presenting the work I’ve done at a great conference in my favorite place - one of the rare moments I feel truly proud of myself ☺️
Happening now - Launch of the
@GLAN_LAW
/
@bellingcat
Justice and Accountability Methodology for Online Open Source Investigations (hosted by
@Swansea_Law
)! Congrats to all involved - an amazing contribution to the field!
A senior academic once told me they didn’t think I should have gotten into my Master’s program because I’d “never be able to succeed in legal research without a first degree in law” - now a few years later & I killed it in that Master’s, have publications and started a PhD! 😎
After standing from 9 am - 11 pm with no food or bathroom breaks I can confirm that festival life is not for me. Very much prefer my normal antisocial PhD weekends.
It’s finally here! The
@opiniojuris
Symposium on Fairness, Equality and Diversity in
#OSINT
starts today. Thanks again to all the contributors for their hard work on such important topics! You can check the stellar line up here 👇🏻
That went by quick! Today is my last day visiting at
@hrcberkeley
. Special thanks to
@KAlexaKoenig
and the rest of the HRC team for welcoming me this semester - it was a pleasure to learn from you and get involved with your work. See you soon, London!
Just saw the JICJ special issue on new technologies has been published in full and can’t even describe how proud I am to have my name on this table of contents with such brilliant people! Check it out!
A bit of a delayed announcement but excited to have officially joined the Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project
@HRBDTNews
as a Research Officer! 🥳
Tomorrow,
#ICC
Office of the Prosecutor will host a conference to discuss the relationship between cyber-enabled crimes & the
#RomeStatute
.
The roundtable will gather tech, cybersecurity & legal experts to examine the misuse of cyberspace to commit or facilitate serious crimes.
This morning
@KarimKhanQC
spoke about many interesting topics but I was happy to hear him discuss the issue of vicarious trauma for investigators viewing graphic content and the efforts the ICC is taking to combat this - very important and doesn’t get discussed often enough!
Thank you to whoever decided to put the law PhD office directly next to a room used for theatre classes. I'm having a great time researching atrocity crimes today while they practice monster noises and screaming next door.
En route to The Hague for the week to present at the “Accountability in a Digital Age” workshop at
