Ya'll, an author who is a guaranteed money earner getting a big book deal does not, in fact, take away money from smaller authors. The types of sales that result from these deals actually typically bankroll a lot of other authors. Leigh Bardugo is sure to earn out and then some.

@SaraAlfageeh I’d schedule send if you can. Even if you preface the email saying you don’t expect a response, I’m the type of person who reads right away and thinks about how I have to respond anyways. I’d think about it sitting in my inbox unanswered all break. It’s nicer to just get nothing.

I've said this before, but before you pitch your project as Magical Realism, please do research on the genre. It has very specific cultural and political implications and is not just "lightly speculative."

I’ve seen news of 3 editors leaving publishing forever today and I know many more who have left recently. I hope publishers are able to work on their retention issues. And in the meantime, hire more staff to fill those roles instead of doubling the work of current staff!

A problem I see in many fantasy queries is that authors want to start with the details of their world, but with so little space, what really matters is the character and their journey. The world should be introduced as you explain how your character interacts with it. #querytip

A query letter shouldn't tell me things I already know, like that you're seeking representation (I know, lol), or quote lines from my wishlist. Instead, tell me what's intriguing about your project. Show your enthusiasm. Explain what will resonate with readers and me. #querytip

Hi Friends, if your query doesn't describe the plot of your book, that's an auto-reject for me. Yes, I care about you, yes I care about your themes and inspiration. But none of that matters if I don't know what your project is about. Give me the story arc and character goals.

Just a friendly reminder that your middle grade of YA book set in the 90s will not have the nostalgia factor you are hoping for, since your current audience was not alive then. Think very carefully before setting a project in the past!

I am over books opening with characters monologuing at the audience about their life. Instead, give them something to do, and start with scene-work. Show us what they are up to, give them an objective, and fill in the backstory organically as the scene unfolds. #writingadvice

The biggest mistake I see consistently is a lack of emotional description for our POV character. We should know what they are feeling on every page. If something new happens, let's get a reaction! Describe their physicality-their breath, heartbeat, muscles, stomach #writingadvice

To me, it’s much stronger to start with deep scene work. Place your character in a moment, give them an objective they are trying to achieve for that scene, and then give us backstory and information organically as they interact with some element related to it. #writingadvice

Other agents may feel differently, but I personally am not looking to represent projects by debut authors that are over 150K words. I have a flag set in my QM that lets me know when a word count exceeds that amount. That is really the length of two full manuscripts.

As I'm reopening to queries in a few hours, I wanted to re-up this advice. I look for these 5 things. If there isn't a clear answer to each of them, then it's hard for me to understand your story. I'll add that stakes can also be a choice they'll need to make.

When you are formatting your query letter, synopsis, and manuscript, do yourself a favor and do away with gigantic paragraphs. They are hard to digest. If it's more than 5 or so sentences, it can be two paragraphs. Make it easy for your reader!

Listen, if you want to be traditionally published, you should probably follow agent guidelines and generally stick to conventions of genre/category. Once you are established, you’ll have more leeway. And if you don’t want to follow guidelines, then indie or self-pub.

#Querytip 1) What does your character want? 2) What is standing in their way of getting it? 3) What are they going to attempt to do to overcome that obstacle (or obstacles)? The answers to these three questions should be the meat of your summary.

Sometimes query advice doesn't apply to everyone. For ex, 250-350 words is sound advice, but not if you're writing SFF or historical. It's more important to establish context so we have enough info to understand goals, obstacles, and stakes than to keep it brief. #querytip

I can’t possibly respond to a competing offer of rep with a deadline of less than 2 weeks and I’ve stopped trying. It requires me to drop everything including current client work. I want to give all your work the consideration it deserves, so please don’t rush the decision!

Today is both #Pitdark and #PBPitch . If I <3 your post, please send me your query and first 25p (attached) to submissions @thompsonliterary .com. Or query, text and sample illustrations if it's a PB.

As many of you know, my client, Lani Forbes, has been battling cancer, and today she was placed in comfort care. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers, and if you can, here is a link to her GoFundMe to donate to her medical bills:

Today, I've already reviewed 2 days worth of queries and written a 9 page editorial letter. Really crunching it out over here before the holidays! 💪💪💪 #amagenting

I was working hard to get through requested material, but then my dog was in a pool of sunshine and I had to stop to document. Gaze upon his beauty!

#Querytip This should be obvious, but please follow submission guidelines. For example, I do not like pages pasted into the email body. It won't stop me from reviewing, but it's a pain. In my case, I prefer an attachment.

It’s an amazing accomplishment to earn out an advance. But what’s not often discussed is how the publisher makes money on a project way before the advance is earned out. So often books that don’t earn-out are still a great investment as long as they are a net positive for the pub

I'm just going to be over here with my hot takes all day! I have published 8 traditional books and never earned out. I just signed a three-book deal at Putnam, a major respected imprint of PRH. You don't have to earn out to keep writing. Get that advance money if you can.

Needless to say, I’m very frustrated with publishing today. It gets harder and harder to sell books amidst layoffs and consolidation. Sending love to my PRH and Inkyard colleagues.
