The 2021-2022 City Budget was approved last night on second reading. It included a 16% increase in starting pay for Lubbock Police Officers and lowered the tax rate.

This morning Steph and I attended the service for fallen Texas Tech Navy Seal Gage Ingram. It was a moving ceremony to honor his sacrifice. A reminder to all of us that freedom isn’t free.

We broke ground on the Tornado Memorial this morning. When complete, it will serve as a gateway to downtown Lubbock that will honor those lost and impacted by the 1970 tornado.

On my run this morning, I ran into Troop 157 and Jackson Bentley working on his Eagle Scout Service project in Guy Park building covers for park benches. Proud of these young men and their willingingness to volunteer to make things better.
We broke ground today at the new LISD North Elementary Campus. This is a $25MM investment in North Lubbock and when complete will be home to about 700 students each day. Great neighborhoods have great schools.

We heard an update from the Texas Anti Gang Unit at Council meeting today. Sobering to hear about the Iives lost from drugs. Further reinforces my position against the decriminalization of cannabis.
Yesterday we approved a ordinance that will help speed the process of certain water bill appeals. This will allow the City to be more helpful in cases when rate payers experience a high volume of usage from line breaks or other unforeseen usage issues.

After listening to citizens concerns, Councilwoman Joy and I have asked staff to work on a revised sewer line ordinance that addresses city responsiveness for repairs and relieves the financial burden on property owners. More to come on this…
