My daughter’s school weighed the entire class yesterday. She comes home asking if she weighs too much because other girls who weigh 100 pounds were complaining about being fat. They all compared weights. I am furious. What the hell were they thinking?

Breastfeeding promotion often ignores the health, both physical and mental, of the women doing the breastfeeding. Even organizations like the AAP are guilt of this. Need an example? No problem, just keep reading this thread.

I take care of patients with eating disorders. They can often tell you when they developed concerns about their weight. They can tell you the day. It’s incredibly irresponsible for a school to focus on weight at all, and so much worse to do it in a group setting.

But what if, and please hear me out because this is going to be really out there, what if we take mom into account. I mean, what if we think of the mother as a human being who deserves consideration of her condition. I know, wild. Stay with me.

No evidence exists that shows thoughtful supplementation derails breastfeeding in a scenario like this. Babies don't get "confused". People who promote nipple confusion don't understand human evolution or babies. And there are myriad benefits to maternal rest and respect.

When is mom sleeping? Between feeds every 1-2 hours that last more than 30 minutes each? While baby is crying constantly because of starvation? What if mom doesn't want her baby to be suffering from hunger for another couple of days or more. What if mom wants to sleep?

But what a mom who wants to ultimately breastfeed offers a small amount of formula, half an ounce for example, maybe 20cc, so baby sleeps for an hour or two so she can sleep? Baby will wake up hungry and ready to breastfeed. What if mom does this occasionally until milk is in?

Is there a downside to formula in this scenario? It depends. The AAP and other lactivist organizations want you to think that there are two options: exclusive BFing or cramming as much formula down a baby's gullet as possible while waving goodbye to a future Harvard enrollment.

I imagine it’s true for many professions, but being a doctor requires making the same jokes thousands of times as if it’s spontaneous. When I meet a new family and take the baby from mom or dad, always asking permission of course, I say “Don’t worry, I haven’t dropped one yet.”

Baby is crying more despite frequent nursing. What is frequent nursing? Every 1-2 hours for 30 minutes or more. Should she supplement? According to AAP, no. 10% loss is normal. Cluster feeding is good. Formula supplementation now might result in more formula later. Ahhhhhh!

Thanks. You can put it over there on top of that giant pile of other studies showing this.

I rounded on 27, 32, and 37-year-old patients today. Certainly not what I went into pediatrics to do, but I’m happy that I could help the overburdened adult teams even a little bit.

I’m going to go against the grain here and say that at no point in human history has choice of apple variety played any role whatsoever in the health of any individual or caused weight gain. An apple is an apple. Someone is being paid to write these silly articles.

While there’s truly no “bad” apple, some ARE better than others!

As a pediatrician who primarily cares for newborns, I can vouch for this. I see these babies, we call them termies, almost every single day. Something must be done!

WATCH: Trump decries the fact that “laws allow a baby to be born from his or her mother’s womb in the 9th month,” and says “it is wrong, it has to change.” It’s unclear if Trump is calling for forced abortions or for delaying births until the 10th month.

This photo does not demonstrate safe sleep. Infants should sleep on a firm and flat mattress with no raised sides and no loose blankets. There is no benefit and only risk when using a DockATot or similar device as demonstrated here.

@quality_nguyen My feedback to students is usually that there are two key skills necessary to become a successful doctor: intellectual humility and comfort with uncertainty.

Hi. We were talking about moral fatigue. You must have misunderstood. Thanks for trying though. Can we talk about this later? I have a suicidal tween and there are no psych beds in the state. (Dr. Jones away mumbling something about fucking egg-shaped pods.)

Sanjay Gupta just said on CNN that what you eat for breakfast determines how sick you might get later that day because “80% of your immune system is in the gut.” @drsanjaygupta you have to know how ridiculous that sounds, right? Right?
