The @mainemonitor first reported in 2020 that the Somerset County Jail in #Maine was recording calls between attorneys and jailed defendants, often awaiting trial. Steven Clarke’s case, along with others, shows that the practice extended back years, at least to 2014.

Maine’s FOAA law sets no maximum amount of days before a state agency must respond. I’ve heard lawmakers say that a time limit would encourage agencies to wait until the last moment to hand over records. That rings hollow when you’re waiting for records with no end in sight.
