South Africa is a country in enormous pain. Hard to explain to those abroad what this is all about. It doesn’t actually change anything fundamental but it gives people a sense that success is possible. It’s not just about rugby. Never is.

I don’t know how to explain this to my English friends. England would have loved to win this but SA will go mental. A country that lives off scraps of hope and optimism. Hard to explain how much this will mean.

The DA has just won more support from black South Africans than Rise, Bosa and ActionSA combined. There are three points to make about this: (1) it doesn’t mean the DA is perfect, but it does suggest some humility from the supporters of those other parties might be a good idea…

In this age of “staying in your lane” Johnny Clegg was a white man born in Britain who often wrote and sang in Zulu about black South Africans. Contrast with the tedious and destructive essentialism that is the flavour of the day. He embodied what SA could be, but isn’t.

So much political analysis in SA focuses on CR’s battle against the ethno-nationalist looters who flourished under Zuma but far too little on the need to break the hold of unions over public sector, SOEs and education. Economic policy not just a captive of the state capturers!

Right content. Right tone. Excellent performance. The DA looking very focused going into this election year. Clearly a good outing in the SONA debate to kick things off, after a stunning victory at the ConCourt. @jsteenhuisen

Within the first 100 days in office as the anchor tenant for a new multi-party government, the DA will introduce the most comprehensive legislative reform agenda seen in a generation. We will rescue South Africa through concrete reforms and legislation. #SONADebate2024

Watching the US, UK and others respond to the economic damage wrought by the CV. Enraged by SA’s fiscal impotence, a result of its utter, complete, spectacular decades-long stupidity, venality and uselessness on the economy. Poverty also kills. And more will die now. Disgrace.

South Africa is of little interest to the UK government or political class. And in my UK Twitter timeline it is barely ever noticed or mentioned. Until today. Ramaphosa’s performance in Ukraine has cut through, and not (obviously) in a good way.

There are few things more contemptible than the ANC blaming apartheid for things that are manifestly its own fault. Refuge of scoundrels of a special type!

The ANC’s approach in negotiations and government is to rush, bully and swamp the DA. I think it will find the DA isn’t available for co-option.

Yes, parliament. But when it comes to infrastructure, also and more importantly: electricity, water, roads, rail, schools, hospitals, old age homes. So: 30 months to get rid of the ANC, before the fading promise of SA’s democracy goes up in flames too.

The negotiations to form a GNU are not over. They have only just begun. Friday’s was an agreement on some principles plus: (1) decision-making, (2) broad composition of government and parliamentary posts and (3) “in consultation” (means veto) approach to choice of DA ministers…

The DA has some problems, and I fear some might be quite serious, but there isn’t another party is SA remotely worth voting for. WC employment stats proof enough of that. Eskom crisis proof enough of that. Kinda obvious really.

This is the sort of behavior that destroys trust and imperils the GNU at birth. The President has an opportunity to grip the situation over the next few days and show that the GNU isn’t an attempt to perpetuate ANC hegemony. I hope he takes it.

JUST IN : Helen Zille tells me on #FaceTheNation on SABC News that the ANC didn’t consult the GNU about the PA joining. Zille says she has written to Fikile Mbalula to raise this concern. She says the GNU document requires that the ANC consult parties in GNU before others join.

This is a serious mistake by the Economist and the decision will not age well. It also won’t make any difference at all to the outcome, however, so the downside is all the Economist’s and the upside all the DA’s.

The big divide in the SA economy isn’t between white and black owners, it’s between owners and non-owners, or put differently, between people who create jobs and people who don’t. Do everything you can to make it easier to start and grow businesses. That’s the policy!

Astonishment on Twitter that the ANC has taken a race-based approach to Covid relief. Which in turn leaves me astonished. Why wouldn’t it?! Scorpions will scorpion, as the old fable has it.
