little starter, a lot of cow shit and a touch of urea just to be safe. Late planted corn shocked me when i finally checked it out. Good luck and weather can sometimes make you look smart
Yesterday we had to put Glory down. She was one of the first animals we brought "home" when we moved back. Calved a month after we started milking. She kept me going when on tough days. milked her last so i'd end my day with something good. Mar 07-Jun 22.
So before Covid my son never showed much interest in the farm really. Since he had no school or sports I told him he had to feed the calves. Today he had dentist appointment early. Was concerned about who would feed calves and called to make sure I knew what to do.👍
Got an old beater sled for my son yesterday. $300 bucks and a happy kid. It's got a few issues but it works. Told him he has to work at the barn to pay for gas. Likes the rack on the back, place to put his skates when he goes to the pond
When you got a neighbor that will come wash your tractor on parade day because he knows it will take the pressure off you, you got a good one. Thanks Stephen
Lots of things make you question why you dairy farm
Milk price
Feed costs
Fuel cost
The list goes on
But a plugged manure pump on day 4 really has got me thinking why the F do I put myself through this.
Plus side I must love problem solving
It was an honor to be invited to George's funeral today. The man that started Combination Holsteins.
Came to Canada with 50 dollars in his pocket. Incredible story of a guy that loved his family, farm and God.
Had to put one of the dogs down today. 14.5 years old, calmest border collie you'd ever find. Son grew up with her, no matter what time I came in she'd come greet me and would only go to bed when I went. RIP Maddie
Remember when Canada couldn't export beef and the farmers got 20 percent of what they were getting?
Farmers remember....the consumer doesn't because the price never dropped in the store.
I haven't drank in 11 years but days like today make me wish I still did, however I'm too stubborn, so I just drank extra coffee. If tomorrow is half as bad as today I need a clear head and a healthy body.
It's that time of year where it's cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. Otherwise known as 'wheres my hoodie I wore yesterday ' season. Probably in tractor, office in the barn, hanging on a fence post.....
Yesterday the girl that relief milks for me got married. My son and niece did the milking by themselves for the first time. Everything looked good when we got home. First step to semi retirement has been achieved 😉
10 years ago today we started shipping milk.
@GilbertMatheson
and ourselves were the first 2 new entrants in the province. Lost a lot of weight, sleep and hair since we started. Good days are good. Bad days are bad. Just got the price back to where it was back then
Lost one of the first cows that I bred when we started milking. 92 point 4E Damion. Born Dec 09. Just ready to calve again to Diamondback. Was looking better than ever. Only thing she did wrong is she never had many heifers.
Today I drove 5 hours one way to my uncle's funeral. My aunt couldn't believe I did it. She's my Godmother and was always good to me over the years. Figured the least I could do is come give her a hug. Made a point of having a visit with each aunt and uncle.
10 years today since my father passed. Fell asleep as his friend drove him back from first round of chemo. Family was suppose to get together the next weekend. Pissed that we didn't get that last Christmas but he didn't suffer much and just went to sleep.

I'm not on Facebook but if anyone is interested. The Dairy Farmers of New Brunswick does a story on a farm a day for the month of June. Today it's our farm if you want to check it out.
Had to pull this cow out of the barn with hip lifters tonight. She was through the stalls and just wouldn't try, I didn't like her effort and figured she was done. 5 mins after this it started to rain and she walked into the barn. Changed the mood in a hurry!
Corn crew back at 7, all my work has to be done by then so I can pack. Internal alarm woke me at 3:30. Hope it all holds together.
Coffee starter to get going
Yesterday I was the Ringman at the Atlantic Championship Show. Left right after, milked and did chores and was in bed at 930. Laughed this am thinking 25 years ago nobody would have predicted this. Used to go to shows just for the party afterwards back then
Great day with

and I got married, took a cow to the beach for pictures, had a wedding dance that people still talk about (bartender had to go to another wedding 3 times to get more booze).
With no hockey or school I figured it's time for the third generation to milk in this parlor to start. Dips 4 cows and comments that if the cows teats were all in the same spot it would be easier and more efficient. He understands why teat placement is on proof sheet now.
Glory was a rock star at the cow patty bingo during the Keswick Ridge Canada Day celebration. 5 hours later she finally marked the spot. Kids loved her. 12years old and still a gentle giant
Needed some 2 stroke therapy after a shitty few days. Got 130 miles of surprisingly good trails in yesterday afternoon. Once we got out of the populated areas it was some of the best trails of the year. The end is coming fast though
The community has lost a great person. Maarten van Oord was one of the few people that you never heard anyone say a bad word about. Respected by everyone, involved in his community, honest and down to earth. When he spoke you sould listen kinda guy. RIP
Sad news from Sussex today. Earl Floyd died yesterday. Remember going to admire his herd lots over the years. Always ended up leaning on the tank having a beer so Earl could get the news since he hardly left the farm. Floydholm Starbuck Polly 10E has her breeder back
#RIPEarl
If your life gets too easy, volunteer your time to something. Then you can see how difficult some people will make things just to feel important. Swear 75 percent of my headaches come from my volunteering
Had quite the run of bulls plus a couple Angus cross heifers. Last week there was 4 in the pen. My son wanted to keep them all to raise for beef. This week there's 7. Last night he come out of the room looks at me and says what days the calf guy come around! He's learning
I got 2 payments left on my truck, salesman calls and wants to lower my payments and get me in New truck. Told him it would have to be lower than April's for me to think about. That one's $0.
My son has 4H public speaking tomorrow. I made him do his speech. He did good but I said you should do it again. 'Nope, it's good enough, I don't want to win because I'd have to go to districts.' Lol I can totally relate
got access to hen manure. Making a spot on a field so they can pile it. Should make me most popular guy in the neighborhood! With fertilizer prices this stuff cheapens a corn crop costs🐔🐔🌽🌽
Sometimes I question how we're doing as parents. Few days ago I gave my son a cap to wear in the barn. First thing he did was rolled the bill. The next day we were in town and I asked what he wanted for lunch, as long as they don't serve fake burgers he didn't care. 2 for 2👍👍
My son is starting to pull his own weight. Mind you he's not very heavy but those little things he does saves me a pile of time. Plus he's proud of what he's able to do.
Wonder how many times Trudeau would get covid if the Dutch farmers had came to town instead of the truckers? No dance parties or bouncy castles there. Those guys aren't screwing around
The school system needs to go back to the old way of doing math and takeaway calculators. Ordered burger, fries and a shake. $16.20.
Gave the guy $20.20. He tried to give me back the .20. Said $20 would do. I said no just give me back $4. Confused he types it in and gave me $3.95
Son was telling me his friend was good at farming simulator. 'He's not very good at the financial part though. He sold all his crop and blew all his money on a semi, sold his pickup for next to nothing. Guy be homeless if he didn't have a wife in the game!' Sounds real to me
Today is Saturday. Most people have day off. Dairy farms like lost farms run every day of the year. They are economic drivers for our country. Money we spend creates spin off jobs. Possibly it's partially responsible for yours. Ponder that for a bit on this

day
I'm not a fan of hip lifters but they can be handy. I had a cow go down about 20 ft from a pen. Wouldn't try on groved alley to get up. Figured if I could get her to the pen she'd be ok.
Lifted her with the lifters and she scrambled into pen. Tonight she got up on her own👍🐄
Tonight's barn check involved breeding a flush cow to sexed Tatoo and sneaking around trying to catch receps in heat. Fingers crossed. Vegas wasn't built for farmers, we do our gambling at home.
Guardian Angel was riding with me last night. Fell asleep driving. Broke a few hundred bucks worth of plastic off truck and that was it. Feel pretty lucky. Not driving all night anymore!
