Confirmation that Robertson and Sturgeon ran a failed Scottish census. Final response rate was an all-time low of 89.8%. NRS hoped for 94%. Rest of the UK was 97%. Its findings are therefore useless. From numbers of Gaelic speakers to overall population numbers, it’s guesswork.

War poetry. In 1917 the Imperial War Graves Commission asked Rudyard Kipling to write an epitaph for the unknown dead. They would need 200,000 such gravestones. France used “Soldat inconnu”. Kipling, who had lost his son, demurred and suggested “Known unto God.”

Lord of the Isles is currently off Rum on her emergency, unscheduled dash with essential supplies from Skye to South Uist. This cannot go on. ScotGov must charter vessels for the CalMac fleet and postpone the winter closure of Uig until a degree of stability is restored.

No reason to disbelieve Sturgeon saying Covid was altogether too much for her and her govt. They can’t build routine ferries or run a decennial census, let alone manage a killer epidemic. Better in such circumstances to have a govt whose fall-back is not to blame other people.
