TELECOMS ANNOUNCEMENT!
After tomorrow, 20 February, my landline will be hung up.
If you need to communicate, call or text me on my mobile or email me.
Anybody who has mislaid those details, DM me.
So glad the Scottish Government has a salaried Gaelic officer, who trusts Google Translate to know the difference between heat burns (losgadh) and the surname Burns (Burns).
A side effect of the right wing libels of Jack Monroe

is that they deposit the implication that it is unacceptable for a campaigner against poverty to live in relative comfort. In fact, although she won’t accept it, she has earned the best of lives.
While Sturgeon rattles on about Tories, out in the western ocean the island of Barra, home to Angus MacNeil and solidly SNP, has not had a mainland ferry since Thursday and is unlikely to get one tomorrow.
In Skye in the 1970s I was represented by a councillor and an MP. Now I have four councillors, eight MSPs and an MP. That’s omitting my unpaid community councillors and trying to forget my six salaried MEPs. My life is much the same. Theirs is on a roll.
CalMac staff needing police protection from angry customers in Mallaig and Ardrossan. They are the best of us, having to carry the can for political and administrative failure.
Who could have guessed that the next target in the culture wars would be the London accent of a female Olympian and TV presenter whose parents are Irish and Jamaican?
Devi Shridhar has written a piece in the Guardian rightly excoriating the UK government’s poor Covid response.
In 1000 words, she manages not to mention once her own prominent role in formulating and boosting the Scottish government’s equally inadequate programme.
You are paid £95,000pa to run a small national census. You completely cock it up. On the day that the size of your failure becomes obvious you fly to Brussels, where in a rented office you pretend for a week to be a statesman. You keep your job?
Not sure that claiming one of your flagships spontaneously combusted and sank is more impressive than it being hit by an enemy without a navy. It’s a toss up.
Freeman’s admission that Sturgeon “mistakenly” sent 3000 older Scots to their deaths emphasises the need for an independent Covid inquiry. And for a newly independent BBC.
Is Bain really still working on the assumption that all 100 convicted Scottish postmasters are actually guilty - purely because Scottish process is “better”?
If so, she should be overruled to the point of dismissal.
Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain says there would have been corroborating evidence in the cases which led to the conviction of sub-postmasters.
"Prosecutors do not mark cases to proceed in the absence of corroboration - they simply don't do that."
Problem with Janey Godley protesting “it was only a joke” is that she is profoundly unfunny. How are we supposed to tell the difference between her jokes and her insults, when she doesn’t know herself?
Mhairi Black accuses the UK of recently “exporting homophobia.”
What was SNP education spokesperson Nicola Sturgeon doing 21 years ago when she obstructed Labour’s repeal in Scotland of Section 28? Importing it?
Confirmation that Robertson and Sturgeon ran a failed Scottish census. Final response rate was an all-time low of 89.8%. NRS hoped for 94%. Rest of the UK was 97%.
Its findings are therefore useless. From numbers of Gaelic speakers to overall population numbers, it’s guesswork.
War poetry. In 1917 the Imperial War Graves Commission asked Rudyard Kipling to write an epitaph for the unknown dead. They would need 200,000 such gravestones. France used “Soldat inconnu”. Kipling, who had lost his son, demurred and suggested “Known unto God.”
“If I fell in love with you would you promise to be true? And help me understand, 'cause I've been in love before and I found that love is more than just holding hands.”
Murdered in NYC, 8/12/1980.
Silly game to join, but it’s not the English flag. If that vaccine had been developed in Edinburgh, does anybody really believe that Sturgeon wouldn’t have plastered it in saltires and dyed the liquid blue? And sold it anywhere before sending some south.
Glasgow? Edinburgh? You do know that publicly burning books by specific authors, while headlining disgraced racists at your biggest book festival, is not usually considered to be enlightened, progressive behaviour?
Lord of the Isles is currently off Rum on her emergency, unscheduled dash with essential supplies from Skye to South Uist.
This cannot go on. ScotGov must charter vessels for the CalMac fleet and postpone the winter closure of Uig until a degree of stability is restored.
The empty east side of Raasay. By paramedic Kevin Gray, lifted from John Allan’s FB.
200 years ago most of the population lived here, in the glens and on the high green pastures. Then… Hallaig.
Highlight so far of Get Back. Michael Lindsay-Hogg moaning to Ringo that not enough is happening for his documentary, while over his shoulder McCartney is composing Let It Be at a piano.
No reason to disbelieve Sturgeon saying Covid was altogether too much for her and her govt. They can’t build routine ferries or run a decennial census, let alone manage a killer epidemic. Better in such circumstances to have a govt whose fall-back is not to blame other people.
Either Trump is a credible presidential candidate or he is not. If he is, his promise to hand Europe to Putin because he fantasises NATO as a subscription service, which Europeans dodge paying, deserves a response from his Tory fanboys.
If you wish to convince a judge led Covid inquiry that you did not run your administration as an autocracy, best not to turn up on your first morning as a poundshop Eva Peron.
Couple of nights in Inverness. The place is no more representative of the Highlands and Islands than are Edinburgh or the west end of London. Move the agencies, BnG, HIE, out west. Dismantle Highland Council. Stop pretending the city has similar needs to Staffin or Lochboisdale.
Stories I would like to read that newspapers could do well: Who was the last person in Britain to discover the Queen had died (someone in the Outer Hebrides, eg, still may not know)? And who was the first baby born under King Charles?
Arthur Donaldson to Hugh MacDiarmid, 1945: “It will be a long and bitter road to independence, Hugh. The obstacle I fear most is the inevitable clash between cis feminists and transsexual women.”
Western isles women’s football team play Bermuda in the final of the Island Games in Guernsey tomorrow.
Tough tie. Bermuda are former champions. But the island girls are on a sensational roll. Go for it - the game of your lives.
Cafegate is small. The tidal surge of historical ignorance it provoked is astonishing. Qualified Nationalist historians could subdue much of it with a few sentences. The fact that they don’t tells an unflattering story about 21st century Scotland.
It took the people of South Uist ten hard years to get their Mallaig connection restored. Now Lochboisdale will be without a service for five weeks because ScotGov failed to build boats. Straightforwardly disgusting.
The ferry service between Mallaig and Lochboisdale has been cancelled between 5 April to 13 May as CalMac seeks to maintain other routes in its west coast ferry network
MVs Hallaig and Hebridean Isles in Sound of Raasay today. Horns fraternally blasted - the ships are captained by two Ratharsaich Gillies brothers. Out of picture their father, his own seagoing days behind him, watched critically from the shore.

Appointment on Friday for Covid jag - which will be inside ScotGov’s December guarantee to my age bracket of mid-February. Delivered on this small island by our local nurse. All excellent. Actually, it’s all bloody remarkable.
He gets away with it as he always has, by widening the gulf between his behaviour and people’s expectations of normal behaviour. Nobody expects that monstrous level of entitlement and greed, so nobody - not even Priti Patel - is equipped to deal with it.
This low curtsey is exactly the same squat-and-stand training exercise I’d give to young adult footballers. They were in their 20s and half of them couldn’t do it without falling over. Anne is 72 and in heels. Respect.
“Covid cases in Scotland are up to high doh” are the first words in Godley’s advert. That common British term, taken from the tonic scale, means over-excited, fed up. It does not have a numeric value, does not mean “a disturbingly large amount”. Can I have my £12k now please?
I did not previously believe in karma, but boats full of frightened British people are about to try to seek refuge (from wildfires in Corfu) in Albania.
Any comments, Braverman? Farage?
A bad day for
@Baddiel
and
@Dawn_French
, who supported the Caledonian Jim Davidson. A worse one for the Scottish media. She’s been jumping up and down in your faces for years, as nasty a piece of work as you’ll spot in a day’s march, but it took Americans to do the spadework.
Kate Forbes’ political beliefs are clearly open to criticism, but her communion really is not, even when it is the source of some of those beliefs.
Substitute, in modern Scotland, “Free Church” with “Hinduism”, “Islam” etc… see what you get.
The Chickasaw Nation (30,000 of them) has invested its casino income and is Covid vaccinating free of charge every Oklahoma resident (3,000,000 of them). Must number among the great historical acts of reconciliation and generosity.
Published today… the tale of the grand old man of Scottish community ownership. Featuring golf, air services, oil … and land reform as a practical achievement rather than just a slogan.
Stunningly different perspective on one of Britain’s most photographed landscapes. Looking south over the Raasay archipelago from the north of Rona.
Taken by air ambulance paramedic Kevin Gray. Lifted by me from the FB account of John Gillies.
To satisfy her sleazy paymaster, 20 years ago Nicola Sturgeon tried to frustrate the Labour Party’s repeal in Scotland of Section 28. Her opponents at the time did not brand her as homophobic. She won’t, but she should be more careful now with the scattergun trendy abuse.
Dear America,
Re the Netflix documentary.
Not all of us bought into Jimmy Savile. Some of us have known all our lives that he was at best a skincrawling fake, and was probably capable of any depravities.
Sincerely,
Britain
Owen Jones is commissioned by The National solely for his hatred of the Labour Party. He has no more insight into Scottish public affairs than any other middle-aged, middle-class Londoner.
That suits The National’s limited agenda. It shouldn’t be a qualification to BBC Scotland.
Never seen Sturgeon so relaxed and charming as with those Geordie girls at Portobello.
Yet she thinks they are, at best, colonialist foreigners with completely alien values and aspirations and even speaking a different language.
She needs to get out more.
Every year, Stephen Flynn pays public ritual homage to the work of a man who advocated “Scottish fascism” and who wanted Hitler to win WW2.
Flynn should maybe try a bit of modesty before berating other people’s “values”.
