My grandfather worked in the fields 18 hours a day, but the most important thing he cultivated was unity. It’s a force so powerful it can lift a kid like me from a farmworker’s house to Speaker of the California State Assembly.
Thank you
@GavinNewsom
for signing Assembly Bill 1266! I am proud to have authored this bill, which will make our roads safer for cyclists. Let's build bike friendly cities in CA!!
My daughter joined me at work today - being careful to adhere to Covid-19 guidance. I’m working hard to represent the half a million residents that call Assembly District 30 home. The future looks bright - we will get through this together.
#GirlDad
I was incredibly honored to take the oath of office today alongside family and friends. I’m excited to get to work for the people of Assembly District 30!
Thank you
@JulianCastro
for supporting AB 1783!!
Farmworkers work in our fields with the hope of building a brighter future for their children... I believe they ought to have a safe and decent place to call home. I urge
@GavinNewsom
to sign the Farmworker Housing Act of 2019!
America’s farmworkers are experiencing a humanitarian crisis—facing a severe lack of dignified, affordable housing.
I'm proud to join
@AsmRobertRivas
&
@UFWupdates
in urging
@CAGovernor
to sign AB 1783 to address the critical shortage of farmworker housing in California.
When communities fail to build the housing they need, those communities are not the only ones to suffer. Having lived in rural CA my entire life, it’s difficult to live through these impacts today—historic rates of traffic congestion, displacement, homlessness, affordability.
Joined colleagues today at Oakland City Hall in support of
#sb50
to ensure cities are doing more to build housing, especially affordable housing! Thank you Senator
@Scott_Wiener
for continuing the fight for more housing!
A busy day in the CA Assembly… thankful to my colleagues for their support in sending three of our bills to the Governor—re: Extreme Heat, Hospital Safety, and reforms to the post-entitlement building permit process. Stay tuned… more to come!!
Having grown up in farmworker housing... I’m committed to ensuring that our current generation of farmworkers and their children have the chance at a better life and a brighter future.
HAPPENING NOW: Asm.
@RobertRivas_CA
is holding a press conference on
#AB1783
which would create a process to build farmworker housing on agricultural land in California.

Such an honor to welcome Gabby Giffords to the Assembly Floor today! I admire her efforts to pass sensible gun control laws at the state and federal levels - we must act for the sake of our children!
Thousands of farmworkers and farmers in our region and across California continue to work through this COVID-19 crisis - to ensure that we have food to feed our families. Words can not adequately express our gratitude. Thank you
@MarcosBreton
for sharing.
They never shelter in place. They often have no shelter at all. They work like this so we can eat. They feed us & we treat them terribly, from the state Capitol to the border & beyond. We should be ashamed of ourselves for how we treat those who feed us.

Proud of the diverse, statewide coalition we have built. I am thrilled to have secured enough support to be the next Speaker, as affirmed by current Speaker Rendon.

#AB1783

Thank you
@GavinNewsom
for building more homes for our rural neighbors!
With the future of Roe vs. Wade in doubt, I’m proud that, here in California, we’re working on bills to expand & protect access safe & legal abortion. We’re prepared to be a reproductive freedom state for all!

Starting the week right! Early morning press conference calling on Governor
@GavinNewsom
to use his power to review and contest the Trump administration proposal to allow new oil and gas drilling on over 725,000 acres of federal land in the Monterey Bay Area.
Proud to campaign with

- The Farmworker Housing Act of 2019. I look forward to working with my colleagues to create housing opportunities for our farmworking families.
Congratulations to all of our colleagues and Democratic candidates across the state for their successful campaigns last night. Thank you to all who chose to participate and run as well.
I am looking forward to strong, united Democratic leadership for CA in the years to come.
Proud to be a co-sponsor of this important resolution. The science is incredibly clear: global warming is a threat to our future. We must do all that we can to cut carbon emissions. We have an obligation to do what is right. Thank you

Yesterday, Kansas — one of the reddest states in the Union — overwhelmingly rejected restricting abortion access.
This is just the beginning. From west to east and north to south we are going to fight like hell to protect and expand reproductive health care across the country.
HUGE CONGRATUALTIONS to our colleagues in Kansas!
Protecting access to abortion is not only the right thing to do, it’s what voters (across the political spectrum) want.
The fight across the country for access to this essential health care continues!
Amid CAs unprecedented and devastating job losses and subsequent surge in unemployment filings, I appreciated joining

I was devastated to learn about the tragic shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. My heart breaks today for the families who are suffering because of this outrageous violence.
Grateful to our first responders for helping to preserve our community safety.
Throughout this pandemic, farmworkers have never stopped working. It’s a problem that 54 of CAs 58 counties do not provide any public information re: confirmed cases of COVID-19 by occupation. We need to do more. TY
@GavinNewsom
for stepping up!

The Governor delivered a powerful State of the State address this morning. He discussed many issues important to Assembly District 30: transportation/roads, education, public safety, affordable housing, affordable healthcare, and the importance of protecting our environment.

Speaks to the scale of the housing crisis. "Many of the more than 90,000 farm workers living in the Salinas Valley live in sub-standard housing... On average 7 people share one bedroom... This is a humanitarian crisis, right here in the Golden State."

Countless hours of work have led to this moment. I am pleased to announce that
#SB54
overwhelmingly passed the Legislature and will head to
@GavinNewsom
for his signature. It’s time for California to lead the nation and world in curbing the plastic crisis. Our planet cannot wait.
As a kid who grew up in farmworker housing and went on to become a State Assemblymember, I share Governor Newsom’s commitment to make the California Dream available to all. Here are my initial reactions to
@GavinNewsom
first budget proposal.
We don’t have a housing “issue” in CA, we are in a “crisis.” And we must ALL be a part of the housing solution.
This week brought great discussion in the Senate & I look forward to more. This is not my backyard or yours -this is OUR CA backyard. Let’s think of it as such. 💯
We can do better. As the largest producer of agricultural products in the US, CA has a responsibility to step up and protect the essential role farmworkers have played throughout this crisis – and the role they must continue to play to ensure our nations food supply.
Recently passed federal legislation make farms with less than 50 or more than 500 workers exempt from requirements to provide paid sick leave, says Nicholson, VP of
@UFWupdates
.
"Neither of these exclusions make common sense when you're talking about protecting the food supply.”
Today is World Wildlife Day. I was honored to join and speak with the Ventana Wilderness Alliance! I am proud to represent the Big Sur area in the State Assembly and will continue to fight to protect our precious coast and wildlife areas for future generations.
Congrats to Gilroy resident KC Adams who was awarded the Martin Luther King Freedom Award this morning! KC has dedicated his life to the Gilroy community and is an example to us all!
Thank you SBC LULAC for hosting another great Veteran’s Day Breakfast! San Benito County is fortunate to have so many Veteran’s give back and contribute to our community.
First candidate forum of the general election! Thank you for the invitation Gilroy Rotary... I enjoyed sharing my ideas and working to solve problems in AD30 and CA.
It is true...many undocumented workers pay more in taxes than Donald Trump.
But, Donald Trump did pay more in taxes than Mexico paid for his wall, so there’s that.

Friendly reminder:
Every dollar we spend criminalizing homelessness is a dollar we could have better spent on more affordable housing and supportive services.
This pandemic has reminded us of a fundamental truth that at times we have overlooked as a society - a risk to some of us, is a risk to all of us. We are only as healthy as our most vulnerable. Proud to work in
@CAlegislature
and work to find the best path forward for CA.
Proud to work w/

on the CA Farmworker COVID-19 Relief Package—the first proposed legislative relief package for farmworkers in the country. Now is the time to make sure we take care of our farmworkers, just like they take care of us.
We have a long history of supporting our communities and employees - this time is no different. That’s why we are using our supply and logistics network to begin producing and distributing bottles of hand sanitizer to accommodate the growing needs across the United States.
This important collaborative study “provides critical missing information in farmworkers’ abilities to protect themselves and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
@LatinoCaucus
We need to move quickly to protect our farmworkers. I’ve been vocal about the need to improve the extreme housing conditions our farmworkers face—conditions not only a threat to the health of our farmworkers, but the food supply chain we rely on to LIVE!

My Assembly colleagues and I took a fascinating tour of San Diego Gas & Electric’s Weather Monitoring Center this morning.
Thank you
@AsmRodriguez52
for organizing this great visit as part of your all-important San Diego Emergency Management Tour.
On March 24, I sent a letter to CA ASM leaders, outlining measures we must enact into law to ensure the health and safety of our agricultural workforce. There is no time to waste - we must act with urgency.
California is leading the way in agricultural innovation. Exciting to read about the evolving agricultural technology occurring in the Salinas Valley and throughout AD30!
CAs housing crisis is unacceptable. For essential farmworkers and millions of Californians their housing situation is DEPLORABLE and is a HUMANITARIAN crisis. We have to do better. We have a moral responsibility to do better.
Our campaign has always been about listening to the concerns of residents in all parts of Assembly District 30. Thankful for those that were able to make our meet and greet in Downtown Salinas.

One of the greatest of all time. His wife, daughters, the other victims, and the entire NBA family are in my prayers. This news brings me tremendous sadness.
I think at the end of our lives, we’ll be judge by how we treat those closest to us, particularly our children.
There’s no doubt that Kobe loved his children and was a loving father.
This will be a lasting image.
California's farmers and agriculture workers have faced incredible challenges due to the

A special evening at the Central Coast YMCA Youth & Gov't Banquet... Always encouraging to see the development of our youth and their commitment towards civic engagement!
An epidemiologist studying how social inequity may be driving coronavirus infections found a disturbing impact: across the country, the death rate from COVID-19 is much higher in counties with large populations of farmworkers.
It’s been another great week up in Sacramento, supporting old and new friends alike who are stepping up to serve when the stakes have never been higher.
TY
