There’s a red flag for NFL officiating: through 17 weeks in 2020, there was never a weekend when 200 penalties were assessed. The high was 198 penalties in Week 2. This season, officials assessed 214 penalties in Week 1 and 221 more in Week 2. This trend needs to be reversed.
There have been 28 500-point offenses in NFL history. All qualified for the playoffs but only two were eliminated in the wild-card round — the 2000 St. Louis Rams and the 2021 Dallas Cowboys.
Ten years ago the NFL averaged 11.8 penalties for 97.3 yards per game. Five years ago the averages were 13.2 penalties for 111.1 yards. This season NFL games average 14.9 penalties for 124.5 yards. The more the flags, the worse the game.
Best of luck to the Rams & Cardinals tonight. They have drawn the Carl Cheffers officiating crew for their game. This crew has assessed the most penalties of the NFL’s 17 crews this season slapping Buffalo, Las Vegas, Minnesota & Tennessee all with 100 yards in penalties in games
Buffalo-KC was one of the best NFL games you’ll ever see. Counting playoffs, of the 281 games played in the NFL this season, that game had the 4th fewest penalties called — 4. The Hussey officiating crew let the players play & we were rewarded with a great, great football game.
Roger Staubach: 8 seasons as a starter, 4 NFC championships, 2 NFL titles. 1970s all-decade selection. 4 NFL passing titles. Won 74.5 percent of his career starts, 3rd best in NFL history behind Graham & Brady. Also 11-6 in the playoffs. Most underrated QB in history.
The most incredible stat about the late Bob Gibson is that he pitched more complete games (255) than he had wins (251). The man was his own bullpen. RIP.
I am overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of support & appreciation I've received today on my final day in newspapers from readers, writers, coaches, players & friends. I've always cared about those reading what I wrote. It's gratifying to discover they also cared about me.
Tom Brady should be a scary sight for the AFC champion Chiefs in the Super Bowl. So should referee Carl Cheffers. He worked two KC games this season and assessed 10-plus penalties against the Chiefs in both. KC had only four double-digit penalty games all season.
The Raiders-Cowboys draw the Shawn Hochuli officiating crew today. Road teams are 8-2 with Hochuli this season. One of the two road losers was the Cowboys in the season opener at Tampa. The Hochuli crew has called the fourth most penalties of the NFL’s 17 crews.
The 49ers were penalized 11 times for 81 yards in the NFC championship game. No team was penalized more this postseason. The second-most penalized team this post-season was the Bengals, who were flagged nine times in the AFC title game for 71 yards.
The Eagles played a penalty-free game against the Cowboys -- only the second team all season to play a penalty free game. The Patriots were the other against KC. There have been 30 penalty-free games since 2000 and a league-high five have come with the Cowboys as the opponent.
Former SMU star and NFL veteran Zach Line (Vikings, Saints) is the head football coach at Oxford {MI) High School, the site of the mass shooting Tuesday. One of his players was among the three fatalities.
The Bills-Patriots game tonight draws the Shawn Hochuli officiating crew. Home teams are a league-best 8-3 with Hochuli this season. The Patriots have never lost with Hochuli, posting a 5-0 record. The Bills are 0-2 with him with two 10+ penalty games.
The Titans-Chiefs draw the Clete Blakeman officiating crew, which has been the hardest on home teams in 2022 with an average of 7.3 penalties per game. This crew has called the 2nd-most penalties this fall &
#officiated
the high penalty game — 22 in the Arizona-Las Vegas game.
What message is the NFL sending its officials by awarding the Super Bowl assignment to referee Carl Cheffers? His was the only 200-penalty crew this season — the 9th consecutive 200-penalty season for a Cheffers crew. The more flags the greater the rewards?
#WrongMessage
The 49ers-Rams NFC title game has drawn referee Carl Cheffers & an “all-star” crew. The Cheffers crew assessed the most penalties in the NFL this season. LAR are 2-4 all-time with Cheffers, SF 9-8. The Cheffers crew was hardest of the NFL’s 17 crews on home teams in 2021.
The Bills-Chiefs playoff games draws referee John Hussey & an “all-star”crew. Hussey’s crew finished 16th of the NFL’s 17 crews in penalties. The Chiefs are 5-2 all-time with Hussey, including a rate zero-penalty game in 2019. The Bills are 3-5 with Hussey.
From 1930 through 2010, there had been 17 wide receivers selected NFL first-team all decade. Pearson was the only one without a bust in Canton. He’ll now get his this August. A wrong has been righted. All 17 are now in.
Through the first month of the NFL season, there have been an average of 11.8 penalties assessed for 96.9 yards per game. Crete Blakeman has the high crew with 63 penalties in 4 games for 565 yards. Bill Vinovich has the low crew with 22 penalties in 4 games for 150 yards.
Former Raiders coach Tom Flores has been selected by the Pro Football Hall of Fame senior committee as its lone coaching nominee for the Class of 2021.
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Gerald McCoy, Dontari Poe, Everson Griffen & Daryl Worley were all signed by the Cowboys in free agency. None made it to Halloween. Another signee, CB Maurice Canady, opted out of the season. This team needed help in free agency and didn't get it.
All hail Highland Park (Texas) High School. First Clayton Kershaw becomes a world champion with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. Then Matthew Stafford becomes a world champion with the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. Now Scottie Scheffler wins the Masters in 2022.
The 49ers-Packers playoff game draws referee Ron Torbert & an “all-star” crew. Torbert’s crew finished 14th of the NFL’s 17 crews in penalties. Home teams went 10-7 with Torbert. The Packers are 6-2 all-time with Torbert, the 49ers 3-5.
The 13 penalties assessed against the Cowboys today matched the season-high assessed any team in single game this NFL season. Jacksonville has had two 13-penalty games & Denver one. It’s also the 3rd consecutive game the Scott Novak crew has slapped 10+ penalties in the Cowboys.
Brock Purdy is the perfect example of the Ron Wolf philosophy of draft a quarterback every year whether you need one or not. Use a late-round pick to develop him over time and then either play or trade him. You never want to be caught short at that position.
Those 300-yard passing games are important for NFL QBs, right? A QB needs to show he can win games with his arm. Except those 300-yard games are not an accurate barometer. There were 132 such games last season and QBs owning them posted a 64-66-2 record. Yep, a losing record.
The Chiefs-Chargers draw the Shawn Smith officiating crew for their game tonight. This is a low-penalty crew, ranking 13th among the NFL’s 17 crews. The Chiefs are 3-0 all-time with Smith and, this season, the road teams have won the last three games this crew has officiated.
Green Bay playing with its 2nd-string QB & 3rd string RB puts up 28 points on the road against the NFL’s
#2
defense. Good coaching can often take you places your talent can’t, allowing a 14-point underdog to stay competitive throughout.
The COVID impact on the NFL: there are few if any fans in the stands. So there is no 12th man at Seattle, no decibel-splitting roar at Arrowhead & no longer a homefield advantage in the NFL. Road teams have a 96-94-1 record this season, including a 10-4 mark last weekend.
I need an explanation here. The Rams scored 500 points this season and finished second in the NFL in offense and third in rushing. Yet not a single LA offensive lineman voted to the Pro Bowl or the All-Pro team. After watching the demolition of the Cowboys...how does that happen?
The Patriots finished seventh in the NFL in scoring defense this season. This marks the 46th time in 53 Super Bowls that a team that finished in the Top 10 in scoring defense captured the Lombardi Trophy.
Interesting that the NFL has assigned the Tony Corrente officiating crew to Sunday's AFC showdown game between the Patriots and Steelers. The Corrente crew has assessed 203 penalties, tops in the NFL, and officiated over 3 of the 4 highest penalty games of 2017.
Very sad & difficult day for me with the passing of Marty Schottenheimer. I covered the Chiefs in 1989 in his first season in KC before moving to Dallas. We developed a professional bond & friendship that lasted for decades. He gave me this gold engraved money clip when I left KC
Shawn Hochuli finished his first season as an NFL referee but don't expect him to garner any Rookie of the Year votes. His crew set an NFL single-season record by assessing 253 penalties for 2,164 yards. His crew called 84 more penalties than the NFL's low crew (Vinovich).
Don't expect the Rams fan base to launch another petition to remove referee John Parry from the Super Bowl. Parry has worked 7 Rams games since 2008 & the Rams are 7-0. He worked one NE game this season & the Pats were assessed a season-high 14 penalties in a loss at Pittsburgh.
Rick Gosselin researches the NFL Draft and comes up with the best pick in the 86-year history for each of the first 259 draft choices. Manning, Montana & Brady are all there plus lots of surprises:
The players have always had greater security than the coaches in Dallas. If the Cowboys players have a problem with their coaches, put your name on those quotes. Then look in the mirror. Don’t hide behind “anonymous quotes.” Anonymity is cowardice.
The Broncos-Cowboys game today draws the Bill Vinovich officiating crew. 1) This crew has called the fewest penalties of the NFL’s 17 officiating crews (by a wide margin); 2) Home teams are 5-2 with Vinovich in 2021; 3) Over the last 10 years, the Broncos are 1-6 with Vinovich.
Lots of big money spent on the opening day of NFL free agency, most of it panic spending. I didn’t see any Hall of Famers changing teams. Just a bunch of desperate teams awarding desperate contracts. The first week is when all the stupid money gets spent.
Wow — talk about disparity. The NFL has assigned referees Carl Cheffers & Bill Vinovich to work the conference title games. Cheffers reffed the highest penalty crew and Vinovich the lowest crew this season. There was an 81-penalty, 807-yard difference between their two crews.
If I were running the Cowboys, I’d be in the phone with Earl Thomas, Eric Reid and Colin Kaepernick this week to gauge their interest. Looking at this tattered roster, the Cowboys cannot stand pat at this point. They need playmakers on defense and having a mobile QB is a plus.
RIP Jim Lynch, former Notre Dame All-America LB who became a Pro Bowler with KC Chiefs & starter on defense that won Super Bowl IV. Got to know Jim in my years covering the Chiefs in the 1970s. Class act on and off the field. He understood there was more to life than football.
The Colts-Cowboys game draws the Carl Cheffers officiating crew. This flag-happy crew has assessed a league-high 13.5 penalties for 117 yards per game this season. The Cowboys have lost the last 4 games they’ve seen Cheffers dating back to 2018.
The Cowboys-Vikings game draws the Clay Martin officiating crew — and that’s bad news for Dallas. Martin’s crew has been the hardest of the NFL’s 17 crews on road teams this season, assessing 71 penalties for 524 yards. Martin’s crew ranks
#2
overall in penalties with 115.
The Raiders had their second zero penalty game of the season Sunday vs Denver. They became only the third team since 2000 with two zero penalty games in a season, joining the 2001 NY Jets & the 2013 New England Patriots.
Memo to all NFL owners looking for head coaches this off-season: Forget the “hot” assistants who have
mastered the X’s & O’s. Go find a leader of men. Go find the next Dan Campbell.
The Kansas City Royals have drafted more quarterbacks who have started Super Bowls than the Chiefs. The Royals drafted both Dan Marino and John Elway in 1979.
With six consecutive defensive selections to start the 2021 draft, Jerry Jones has sent a message to his lockerroom that all starting jobs on that side of the ball will be up for grabs when the Cowboys go to training camp.
The Eagles-Cowboys game draws the Alex Kemp officiating crew. The last time the Cowboys saw Kemp he was slapping 14 penalties on them in a home playoff loss to 49ers last January. The last time the Eagles saw Kemp they were suffering their only loss of the season vs Washington
The 2nd round is my favorite round of the draft. Teams stop drafting the "measurables" and start drafting the football players -- guys who might lack the prototype height, weight and speed to be first rounders -- Mike Singletary, Howie Long, Jack Ham, Drew Brees, Thurman Thomas
Fun fact: Joe Theismann and Drew Pearson are two of the most storied names in the Dallas-Washington rivalry & Thanksgiving lore. They were high school teammates at South River High School in New Jersey.
The Cowboys' fourth-round draft pick Tony Pollard scored 25 career touchdowns on runs (9), receptions (9) and kickoff returns (7), The average length of his touchdowns was 45.8 yards. Ten of his TDs were 50+ yards.
The Preston Road Trophy is up for grabs this weekend between the 2 NFL teams that got their start in Dallas, the Cowboys & KC Chiefs. Lamar Hunt established the trophy in 1989 because the owners of the two teams lived on Preston Road.
Gil Brandt drafted 10 Hall of Famers. Nine played for the Cowboys. The 10th was Pat Riley, an 11th rounder draft pick out of Kentucky in 1968. Riley was an All-America basketball player at Kentucky now in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
NFL crews assessed a record 3,447 penalties in 2018. First-year referees Shawn Hochuli and Shawn Smith and their crews finished 1-2 in penalties with the Hochuli crew assessing 253 and the Smith crew 228.
I was covering the Chiefs in 1979 when they cut HOF kicker Jan Stenerud in favor of a guy who had been cut by 8 other teams, Nick Lowery. Stenerud went on to play 6 more seasons and go to a Pro Bowl. Lowery kicked 14 seasons for KC and scored more career points than Stenerud.
Here's the sad state of defense in the NFL -- the Jacksonville Jaguars have allowed 802 yards over the last 2 weeks in a pair of lopsided losses & still rank 2nd in NFL in defense. The rule changes have transformed NFL defense from a game of dominance to a game of survival.
In 2018, there were 25 NFL games that officials assessed at least 20 penalties. In 2019, that number dropped to 14 games. In 2020, that number slid even further to 2 games. Let's hope that trend continues in 2021 & the focus on the field remains the players, not the officials.
Not many schools have the courage to schedule Oklahoma on homecoming -- and even fewer are able to beat the Sooners. So congrats to Kansas State today for both the guts and the glory.
48 of the 56 Super Bowl champions finished in the Top 10 in scoring defense. It’s not how many points you score — it’s how few you allow. The Eagles finished 8th in the NFL in scoring defense this season, the Chiefs 16th.
The Raiders-Bengals wild-card game draws referee Jerome Boger and an all-star crew. Home teams went 8-8 with Boger in 2021. Since 2008, the Raiders are 9-5 with Boger, the Bengals 5-8.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame senior committee Tuesday selected former Raiders WR Cliff Branch as its senior nominee and Dick Vermeil as its coach nominee for the Class of 2022.
Welcome to the playoffs. During the NFL regular season, there were an average of 13.5 penalties per game for 115.1 yards. Through the first weekend of the playoffs, there were an average of 9.7 penalties for 75.5 yards. January is when the yellow flags stay in the pocket.
