There’s a red flag for NFL officiating: through 17 weeks in 2020, there was never a weekend when 200 penalties were assessed. The high was 198 penalties in Week 2. This season, officials assessed 214 penalties in Week 1 and 221 more in Week 2. This trend needs to be reversed.

Tom Brady should be a scary sight for the AFC champion Chiefs in the Super Bowl. So should referee Carl Cheffers. He worked two KC games this season and assessed 10-plus penalties against the Chiefs in both. KC had only four double-digit penalty games all season.

Brock Purdy is the perfect example of the Ron Wolf philosophy of draft a quarterback every year whether you need one or not. Use a late-round pick to develop him over time and then either play or trade him. You never want to be caught short at that position.

Those 300-yard passing games are important for NFL QBs, right? A QB needs to show he can win games with his arm. Except those 300-yard games are not an accurate barometer. There were 132 such games last season and QBs owning them posted a 64-66-2 record. Yep, a losing record.

I was covering the Chiefs in 1979 when they cut HOF kicker Jan Stenerud in favor of a guy who had been cut by 8 other teams, Nick Lowery. Stenerud went on to play 6 more seasons and go to a Pro Bowl. Lowery kicked 14 seasons for KC and scored more career points than Stenerud.

In 2018, there were 25 NFL games that officials assessed at least 20 penalties. In 2019, that number dropped to 14 games. In 2020, that number slid even further to 2 games. Let's hope that trend continues in 2021 & the focus on the field remains the players, not the officials.

The Raiders-Bengals wild-card game draws referee Jerome Boger and an all-star crew. Home teams went 8-8 with Boger in 2021. Since 2008, the Raiders are 9-5 with Boger, the Bengals 5-8.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame senior committee Tuesday selected former Raiders WR Cliff Branch as its senior nominee and Dick Vermeil as its coach nominee for the Class of 2022.

Welcome to the playoffs. During the NFL regular season, there were an average of 13.5 penalties per game for 115.1 yards. Through the first weekend of the playoffs, there were an average of 9.7 penalties for 75.5 yards. January is when the yellow flags stay in the pocket.
