I don’t understand why, after 16 years in government, FijiFirst thinks this is an achievement. In global trade terms, this is USD45 million, for a country with thousands of acres of land to farm. Put it in perspective: in 2021 the value of food we imported was about $800 million.

Our “young democracy” is actually 53 years old. That it survived a 16-year attack from Nemani’s FFP heroes is a testament to its resilience. Why all the hand-wringing now about opposition MPs’ salaries? It didn’t seem to trouble him for the eight years FFP was in government🤔.

So my friend @JoneUsamate says his FFP Government only used S.O.51 - the “short debate, pass urgently” Parliamentary rule - for “consequential amendments and minor changes” to laws. @LoraineBhan kept the records. In 8 years FFP passed 318 law changes - 298 (or 91%) under urgency.

It Is uneducated people like this who cause problems in Fiji. This is a highly insecure period. We could be invaded at any time by Samoan troops loyal to Professor Pal Aluwahlia. So we should not be publicly sharing data on our coastal defences, sea walls, etc. #TogetherWeCan

But Aiyaz’s self-congratulatory post has forgotten two things: - the economy grew 15% in 2022, but it had shrunk by 19% in 2020-2021 - so this was mostly post-Covid catching up - as the snippet says in its next line, debt to GDP ratio soared to “above 70%”. It’s now above 90%.

What’s this guy smoking? He must know Fiji’s 2013 Constitution had one of the weakest Bills of Rights in the world, which yielded to every arbitrary military government decree enacted between 2006 and 2014 - including the ridiculous Media Decree. He’s a lawyer, he has no excuse.

What are we being paid? Fair question: #FiscalReviewCommittee members are being paid no fees or allowances. Some (not all) non-Suva members are recovering travel-related costs if they travel (NOT per diems). Other times they join meetings online.

My @fijitimes piece today on Bill 17. Technically there isn’t even a problem. But this disrespectful, I-know-everything-I-don’t-need-to-consult attitude has created a problem where there wasn’t one. It’s also exposed the lack of constitutional protections for iTaukei land laws.

Who would spend $1.6 m more on campaigning than it had in the bank? FijiFirst knew - if it kept winning, the cash would keep coming. And if it kept fear alive, it could starve the opposition of cash. No political party in Fiji has ever exploited its power more cynically.

Y10 student gang-raped at boarding school. School head doesn’t go to Police; he goes to Education Ministry asking what to do. No response. Student is left to carry on. Her grandmother finds out 3 weeks later from “rumors in the village”. She’s the one who reports to Police.
