19yo James Bascoe-Smith’s attackers sentenced to life in prison. James is one of a handful of people to survive the pattern of knife injury inflicted. James & his mother Lisa talk to us, in an exclusive interview, about life since that night & the collateral impact of violence 🧵
Headmaster of The Fulham Boys School tells me their hair policy of no braids or dreadlocks “isn’t racist.” He said he doesn’t want the boys to know “who’s the ‘haves’ & ‘haves not.’” I asked him whether he equates braids & dreadlocks with one of those categories. Watch.
Stopped & searched twice in 6 days
@Ryan_Colaco
says whilst he has hope in individual officers he does not trust the system, which he feels is institutionally racist. IOPC says in 2019 nos. of people filing complaints from BAME communities was low - trust, they say, is big issue.
Police are investigating the complaint of a man stopped and searched twice in six days. It comes as the IOPC said there was a disparity between high numbers of people from the BAME community being stopped and low numbers filing complaints -

James was completely innocent - “caught between 2 rival gangs.” The judge said his attackers “searched for a target to murder.” He was run over & stabbed repeatedly. He suffered severe organ damage & the blood loss starved his brain of oxygen. He had over an hour of resuscitation
Lisa Bascoe-Smith cares for James full time now. She says she had to “fight” for mental health & housing support, describing the systems as “weak.” “Where is the help?” she asks “If we were gang members and we had to flee our area we’d be moved out quite easily.”
EXCL: The Met Police spent over £1m on a criminal investigation against former IPCC commissioner Jennifer Izekor, one of the few Black people to have held the post.

We FOI’d every major trauma unit in the UK asking for the numbers of 16-25yos who’ve been left with life-changing injuries from a weapon assault in last 5yrs. Many places don’t keep data, so how can wider systems measure what provision is needed for family’s like James and Lisa?

James was a gymnastics trainer. He loved DJ-ing. When I asked what he imagines for his future, he said “Nothing.”
In court today, in a video message James said “I didn’t deserve this.”
The family allowed us to document some of James’s journey so far. At 7pm on C4 News.
We hear how the attack on James has impacted his 5yo cousin who is now in therapy. And what of his friends? Some have dropped out of school and are suffering emotionally. The ripple of effect of violence runs deep and is far-reaching.
Misconduct hearing into 8 Met officers reveals they were on a what’s app group called ‘Secret Squirrel S**t’ sharing misogynist, racist, anti-Semitic, disablist, homophobic & transphobic messages from 2016-18. All were part of a Safer Neighbourhoods team. Two are still serving.
Excl: East London school admits some of its methods are ‘completely unacceptable’ after our investigation reveals pupils are referred to as ‘detainees.’ And - staff were given a handbook revealing sexist directives, described by CEO of the school’s trust as ‘from the 70s.’
“You can’t put a schedule on grief,” says

Can’t believe I’m writing this… I’m off to report with the formidable Channel 4 News team for a while.
Excited beyond measure as I’ve long admired the fearless journalism.
I feel like I was born at ITV News London! I will really miss the small team of ambitious & kind people.
Statement from family of Anoosheh Ashoori. He was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, on false charges, on a visit to see his mother in Tehran in 2017.

Duncan Bew adds “We very seldom focus on the actual survivors… when you’re a survivor of this form of extreme trauma you survive with consequences.”
And that can includes family, friends and often the wider community…
The police have just named the 8yo girl who was killed in the Wimbledon car collision as Selena Lau. The family released a photo.
They say “Selena was an intelligent and cheeky girl adored and loved by everyone. The family wishes their privacy to be respected at this sad time”

Oh my days! Did that just happen? The Good Morning Britain team are supportive, encouraging, kind and exceptionally skilled. One of the best teams I’ve worked with in television news. Such a slick operation and so honoured to have been part of the show today.
Update from the lawyers working with ‘Child Q’ and her family. It includes the following from the teenage girl:

The National Day of Protest for Chris Kaba has started outside Scotland Yard. Following the IOPC’s announcement that the investigation will take 6-9 months, Jefferson Bosela - Mr Kaba’s cousin - has told C4 News this morning that he feels the process lacks urgency.
Discussions around starkly different treatment of BLM vs MAGA groups, by police, also apply to journalism. Consider language used in scripts & headlines. We can’t brush that aside: it’s part of the same problem. And think of the reach and influence of newspapers, broadcasters etc
Sasha Johnson’s family has released a photograph of Sasha in hospital. 9 months on she’s still there with “catastrophic and permanent” injuries.
They’re appealing for new information.
“We are asking for justice for you… Now is the time for people to speak up for you."
Breaking: Officer NX121 who fatally shot Chris Kaba WILL face murder charge, the CPS has decided.
Mr Kaba was unarmed when he was shot on the 5th of September 2022.
The review states in 2020/21:
25 children in Hackney, under 18, were subject of ‘further searches’ (language used to cover strip search activity)
88% of searches were negative, with no further action recorded in 80% of cases. 60% of children searched were Black.
To feel seen is something wonderful, I think we may all agree.

Tonight, at a small vigil for the family, Mr Kaba’s cousin told us:

Bonnie Miller is having to think ahead re: which secondary schools in her area her son Farouk will be able to attend. She feels The Fulham Boys School’s policy is discriminatory. In 2017/18 there were protests over the school asking another boy to cut off his dreadlocks.
Well
@CharleneWhite
support has been rich and generous. Came in today to be present if I should need advice or help. Was in the gallery getting stuck in whilst on air. So grateful. And to the whole ITV London News team who exuded positivity today for my first go. It so matters.
ITV News has seen emails sent by teacher Barry Smith, who was brought into Hackney New School to improve discipline, calling pupils ‘detainees’ when handing out detentions.
In my own circles there’s been lots of chat about social anxiety: pressure to join in, being left out, unable to keep up financially, maintaining energy levels, actual act of conversation. Think headlines can make it feel like you can only discuss going to pub or getting haircut.
In March the school’s press team claimed they’d “eliminated bullying” by banning play at breaktime and lunchtime. The staff who spoke to us said the idea that bullying has been eradicated is “laughable.”
We’ve seen emails showing that last year, on one day alone, more than 150 pupils were in detention- approx half of Hackney New School’s population. Staff who spoke to us anonymously, & current pupil on the record, claim disciplinary methods are damaging to pupils mental health.
The Chief of Police Scotland has just told the police watchdog: “Police Scotland is institutionally racist and discriminatory.”
He says publicly acknowledging this is “essential to championing equality and becoming an anti-racist service.”
Hello! I have now finished at ITV News London and will be working on stories for Channel 4 News from here on.
If you’d like to contact re: issues on/circling the criminal justice system (or other topics that go unreported) please email me on the same address or DM. Thank you!
The mother of two teenage boys arrested at Shortlands station has told C4 News the handling of the entire incident “reeks of failure.” Footage shown to us exclusively shows the 15yo boy held against a wall and his 13yo brother having his handcuffs removed. More at 7pm.

Says his abuse of power ‘stands in the way of the revolution of women’s dignity’
Farouk James, Bonnie’s son, is 8yo and he told me that he worries about being expelled from secondary school because of his hair. He thinks policies like this are unfair. The Headmaster of FBS insists his school is diverse and open to all.

Tonight at 6: one year on from lockdown thousands of children with a parent in prison are still ‘largely invisible’, according to recent report.
For many: no prison visits. No video calls.
“They’re grieving for a parent who’s still alive but they can’t see” one Mum tells me.
A pupil sent an email to all staff at the school. In it she alleges a “pattern of conscious & subconscious racism has gotten to a toxicity level beyond limits” The school says it refutes this, stating more than 60% of leadership are from Black & ethnic minority communities.
How candid will the conversation get? Talking race is uncomfortable. Here’s what happened when Founder & CEO of Mentivity

The investigation began in 2017. It related to the tasering of Edric Kennedy Macfoy - a black firefighter - by officers in 2011.
He alleged race discrimination. During handling of EKM's case, Ms Izekor was accused of withholding documents that officers say would've cleared them

Protestors chanted ‘close the school’ in Ashford today following an attack which police are treating as a ‘serious racially aggravated assault’
We spoke to the protest organiser who’s been in touch with the young black girl. He says she’s being supported by a few organisations.
We have also obtained unseen evidence revealing that on the night of EKM’s tasering, an officer at the scene accused another officer of making “monkey noises.”
The officer denies this in documentation. Ms Izekor says this evidence never reached her at the time.
Police watchdog - IOPC - says it will look into following on Chris Kaba fatal shooting:
- how officers came to be aware of car Mr Kaba was driving
- if they had prior knowledge of Mr Kaba
- decision-making on Sept 5th
- whether Mr Kaba’s race influenced actions taken by police
Tomorrow, families of Chris Kaba, Oladeji Omishore, Jack Susianta, Matthew Leahy & Leon Patterson (bereaved by deaths in police & prison custody, & mental health settings) will deliver letter to new PM Rishi Sunak requesting urgent meeting with him & Home Sec Suella Braverman.
