I have long called out
@SteveKingIA
for his racist remarks. While his trajectory of racism is nothing new, it is becoming impossible to ignore. This ideology is unacceptable in the halls of Congress.
My heart goes out to all Iowans. Though it unsettles me that
@SteveKingIA
would dare compare them to the countless victims of Katrina, many of whom lost their lives. When people show you who they are, believe them. Steve King is a white supremacist and I won’t stand for it.
New Orleans has truly lost a piece of our heart that we will never be able to fill. I mourn the loss of our beloved jazz icon, Ellis Marsalis Jr. His music will forever fill our hearts with joy and our streets with melodies. May his soul rest in paradise.
Congratulations,
@RepRichmond
! Thank you for your years of service representing the 2nd Congressional District in Congress. We know you'll continue to fight for Louisiana and our people as part of senior leadership in the Biden-Harris administration.
Today the world lost a political pioneer and tireless champion for justice. I lost my treasured colleague and friend. A principled and passionate leader, Elijah Cummings dedicated his life to public service. May he rest in power and his legacy last a lifetime.
We have truly reached the end of an era with the passing of my dear friend, mentor, Civil Rights legend, and American icon
@repjohnlewis
. I’m grateful for his wisdom, sacrifices, and lifelong fight for justice. I thank him, I love him, and I will sorely miss him.
Special Counsel Mueller made clear today that it is up to Congress to take further action. It is the responsibility of Congress to respond to numerous cases of misconduct described in the Mueller report and to ensure that no one is above the rule of law.
I join the countless individuals in the disappointment over Sunday’s NFC Championship game and am eager to hear from
@nflcommish
directly. All teams deserve equal treatment and the
@Saints
were clearly denied fair treatment. Read my statement below:
The people’s House just passed the
#CROWNAct
. I’m proud to have introduced this legislation and thank my colleagues
@RepBarbaraLee
@RepMarciaFudge
@RepPressley
for their contributions to this bill and for wearing their own crowns with pride and dignity.
Congrats to Jalina Porter, RPCV Cambodia 2009-2011, on winning the Franklin H. Williams Award. Since service, she has helped the Peace Corps enhance the participation of HBCUs and has shown her commitment to lifelong service to the Peace Corps community.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a giant, trailblazer, and one of America’s most treasured minds. May she rest in eternal peace. My prayers go to her family, friends, colleagues, and all those who loved and admired her.
In order to save valuable time and money, I confess that I wrote the
@nytimes
op-ed about the Trump Administration. Instead of using resources on a federal investigation, we could reduce college debt.
To my constituents who have served, as well as all veterans across the country and your families, thank you for your immeasurable sacrifices and service to our country! We salute you today and every day.

Black History is American history and we have a moral obligation to learn and share stories with those who paved the way for us. I had the opportunity to do just that with my friend, mentor, and living legend
@WhipClyburn
. I hope you'll watch.

Today I sent a letter to
@SpeakerPelosi
calling on Congress to create a Select Committee to investigate the disproportionate percentage of minority mortality from COVID-19. In Louisiana, 70% of COVID-19 related deaths are from the Black community. We must act soon to save lives.
America is crying for help just like George Floyd did. That is why the House will vote to pass the George Floyd
#JusticeInPolicing
Act today. We are past the point of enough being enough. We need comprehensive police reform now!
New Orleans has suffered a great loss with the passing of Leah Chase. Leah’s impact to New Orleans is immeasurable. She broke barriers as a leading chef and champion of the Civil Rights Movement. My condolences are with the Chase family at this time. May she Rest In Peace.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived his life in service to others through the practice of peace and social justice. Let not only today, but everyday, serve as a reminder to honor him by following the footsteps of one of our world’s foremost visionaries.

Southeast Asian Americans are here largely because of the Vietnam War. The time is now to help protect these communities from deportation. They’ve played a major role in my district and in cities all across America.
#RefugeeResilience
I signed a letter today along with a few of my colleagues calling on the Federal Bureau of Prisons to swiftly update calculations for good time credit increases, a key provision of the First Step Act. We also look forward to a hearing before the
@HouseJudiciary
Committee.
Governor Kathleen Blanco was a peaceful warrior who will be remembered as a champion for all Louisianans. I send my deepest condolences to the Blanco family during this difficult time. May her soul Rest In Peace.
I join the world in grief with the heartbreaking passing of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna. I send my condolences to his wife, family, and fans during this tragic time. This is a very sad reminder to keep your loved ones close because tomorrow is not promised.
Happy
#CROWNDay
! I’m proud to have authored the
#CrownAct
federal legislation in celebration of Black and Afro textured hair styles. It’s past time to end hair discrimination in our work places, schools, and housing in each and every state across the country.

It's absolutely unacceptable that schools are punishing our African-American kids the way they do. These kids are dealing with a multitude of issues at home and school should be a safe haven for them.
One of the greatest joys and responsibilities in life is fatherhood. Leading by example is a must since your children are always watching. They might even follow in your footsteps one day. Happy

The president didn’t say anything tonight that we haven’t already heard him say before. If he wants to talk about a humanitarian crisis, then he should discuss the 800,000 plus furloughed federal workers, including the 5,858 Louisianans working without pay.

Imposing a Nike ban on the innocent youth of Kenner is divisive and unnecessary. We as politicians should bring people together, not pull them apart. Read my response to Kenner Mayor Zahn’s Nike memo here:
We can disagree on nuances of immig policy, but we should all agree no one should b subjected to this horrendous treatment. If Trump is not compassionate enough to reverse his policy, Congress must! I'm a proud sponsor of Keep Families Together Act
Yesterday, I took to the House floor to congratulate New Orleans Mayor-Elect
@LaToyaForNOLA
. As New Orleans approaches its 300th year, I am excited that we will be led by our very 1st female Mayor. Congratulations again!
Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and safe celebration of Independence Day today! Please remember to continue to exercise caution and wear masks should you convene in groups or large crowds.
Yesterday, I highlighted that Ruby Bridges became the face of school integration at just 6-years-old. Today, students across the country are becoming the face of
#GunReform
in America.
#NationalWalkoutDay
Family separation at our borders is cruel and goes against our values as a country. IT MUST STOP! Joined my colleagues to demand that no federal funds can be used for family separation
May Officer Yvonne Bechet’s soul rest in paradise. We will always remember her lifelong service and sacrifice for the city of New Orleans. I send my strength and prayers to the family and friends of Yvonne Bechet.
Heaven gained another 👼 today.
Today we remember the life & legacy of NOPD’s first African American female officer, Yvonne Bechet.
Bechet served with the NOPD for 22 years! Thank you for paving the way for many of our officers. Your legacy will never be forgotten. 💙🙏
As we pause today to honor the life and service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., remember that his work is not yet complete. We all have a responsibility to carry his legacy of love, peace, and racial justice until his goal is reached. Let’s keep moving forward together.

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks took a bold, yet silent stance against racial injustice by not giving up her seat on a city bus. This simple act inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott to desegregate city buses.
