Our special issue on reflexivity and differentiation came out in Multilingua a few days ago, so it was obligatory for us to meet up and take a picture with our issue (with a stunning view of Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps!).
Last night, two Americans asked me where I'm from. I said The Philippines, and they immediately asked, "how do you speak English so well? How did you learn English?" Usually I just ignore these things, but last night, I was very tired so I said...
"Yeah, Spain couldn't kill our 100+ languages. But this shows how much power the US had on us, right? Only 30+ years of colonization and then this happened?"
Gets me every single time. I know they were probably just trying to be nice by doing small talk, but can we like just talk about the weather or something?! 😅🤣
"Uh, thanks? Your English is alright too. Well, we were a US colony, so English was forced upon us." They noticed I was a little triggered, and they tried to wiggle out of it by saying that "But you were a Spanish colony too and you don't speak Spanish." So I said...
Very happy to share that I my contract is now permanent! I am now a tenured associate professor at the Department of English and Applied Linguistics of De La Salle University! I hope this means I can sleep a little bit more, but I don't think that'll happen lol <3
@wdmanuel
The driving pic is dated July 17. Her + result came out July 18, when she said she got swabbed July 16. Should people do inspections while waiting for swab test results? Fishy.
@EuwanPascual

#NasaanAngPangulo
Arrived in the beautiful city of Göttingen, where I'll spend the next three months as an in-residence scholar of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity! Very excited! ❤️
Sunday night reading.
@jmeblommaert
's writeup is so inspiring, heartwarming, and perhaps most importantly, genuine. One of the most brilliant scholars in our field.
Very happy to share that my paper has just been published in Language in Society! ❤️ So thankful for so many people, especially the editors (
@queertwit
and Prof Ehrlich were amazing!), the reviewers (both were very kind and helpful!) and, of course, Joseph Park and Ben Rampton!
Very happy to share that my paper is now out in Multilingua! This was made possible by the support of many people. <3 The previous and current editors are amazing! This is part of something that I've been brewing with the fantastic Gilles Merminod--will post updates eventually!
Thrilled to announce that I'm returning to
@mpimmg
next week! A much shorter visit this time though. I'll run a workshop, then I'll start writing my monograph and help out with some events! So grateful for the support of this Institute. ❤️🇩🇪
@loudjade23
What mindset do you want the youth to have? Approves of corruption? Cronyism? Murders? Human rights violations? During FM's time, Archimedes Trajano spoke up in a student forum and was murdered for it.
🎼🎵🎶 All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go! Flying out tonight! Really looking forward to
@SS24Ghent
! Privileged to be part of the everyday borders panel organized by
@Eleanor_GY
and
@b_yilmaz04
(Thursday, 1:30-6). My first F2F conference since the age of rona!
My golly, Joseph Park's new paper about time, space, affect, and metapragmatics in IJSL is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT (the issue is amazing!). Probably one of the best papers out there about the relationship between semiotics and lived experiences.
@del_lorenzana
Hangga't hindi niyo nilalabas si Karen Empeno at Sherlyn Cadapan, wag kayong magpanggap na gusto at kaya niyong proteksyonan ang UP. WAG NIYO KAMING LOKOHIN.
Last day in uni this year! Grant me the fortitude to finish marking all the final essays of my students so I can finally go on my mini-sabbatical leave! ❤️
What they don't warn you about when you do grad school in another country: you'll serendipitously meet friends who'll become family, but you'll part ways and you'll just have to accept that you all won't be in the same time and place ever again,and things will never be the same.
Sometimes I wonder if we need to break away from the default definition of "linguistics" as formal/theoretical linguistics. That we have to add modifiers like "applied" or "socio" or "psycho", as if it was our fault that "linguistics" historically neglected these things. 1/6
Happy to share that my paper with Paolo Valdez, "Philippine English and Commodity Formation", is now out in World Englishes!
Grateful for the patience and generosity of my co-author and our special issue editors, Priscilla Cruz and Isabel Martin.
Got so inspired by 1 of my IntroLing BA students today. She is way older than me. She didn't get to finish uni because life happened, and it's only now that she decided to do her degree. Cos of COVID online classes. AND her son was my GenEd student last year! Almost cried.
Wow, the
@ss23hku
videos are here! This is gonna replace my Netflix breaks for the next 2 weeks! Still gutted that this is happening online, thanks, rona 😭(to those who are interested in metapragmatics, check out our panel, Luk Yu Teahouse, June 7, Monday slot!
#shameless
) 😅
This person went viral before for making a fuss about well-meaning students who forget to call her "doctor". Now this. Academics can be very particular about their supposed entitlements. And yeah, go flex that 92k. Like the towels and gabi leaves destroyed the fence or something.
My neighbors decided that my new fence was perfect for hanging their laundry & gabi leaves. Amazing. The sense of entitlement. Or is it community?
I spent 92K on that metal fence. 😭
I complained thru our subdivision GC. Sana andun ang salarin. Baka sila pa ang galit sa akin.
OG dictator's son is running for President, newbie dictator's daughter for Vice President. Probably the worst period of Philippine politics. I honestly feel so unsafe in my own country. Thanks,
@Meta
,
@YouTube
,
@tiktok_us
for enabling the destruction of our democracy. Save me.
Did a Ling Landscapes mini-fieldwork with my undergrads at a food court on campus today. They noticed that while a lot of signs in the food stalls were printed, tip boxes all had handwritten notes. They realized that this relates to affect and authenticity. Quite fascinating!
I've got COVID. Day 7 of mild symptoms, actually thought it was just a cold. Letting Sinovac do its job. It's really sad to not smell or taste anything though. Like zero. Didn't expect that this was gonna make me so, so sad. Happy to be alive, and let's hope it stays that way.
Happy to share that Hiramoto and Vitorio (2019), "The Linguistic Landscapes of Language and Sexuality," is now available online :) It's part of the Oxford Handbook of Language and Sexuality (eds Kira Hall and Rusty Barrett) :)
5AM, woke up cos of a quake (found out its magnitude 6.7), still at the lobby of my building cos of aftershocks. This happened while many parts of Manila are being flooded after days of continuous rains. That's a kind of precarity that we need to talk about.
If we expect sociolinguists to "master ling description first before specializing in the socio stuff", can we then expect formal linguists to "master the social-ness of language first before specializing in formal stuff"? 🤔 legit question, not subtweeting haha 🤗
Had a wonderful month at
@agemig_MPI
at
@mpimmg
. Learned so much from the ATM Group, who welcomed me with open arms and gave me the space to think and write. Thanks so much to the wonderful
@meghaamrith
for making this return visit possible. Thanks for everything, MPI! ❤️🇩🇪
A little screenshot from our panel intro recording for
@ss23hku
. Gilles Merminod and I are setting up a panel on metapragmatics and language ideologies--with the amazing Jackie Militello, Jonas Hassemer, and Miguel Perez-Milans! Excited for this conference! :)
My half-sabbatical finally over. Back at work. First teaching day of this year! Teaching BA Intro Sociolinguistics, MA Discourse analysis, and GE communication classes this term. 💪🤓
Many, many years ago I was in a uni debate tournament, and we were up against Australians. They kept using MILF as an acronym instead of an initialism, like "MILF are out of control" and "MILF harm Philippine democracy" and I couldn't stop laughing during the round.
The original Kathleen Joy Poblete. Bakit question ang pagbalik eh one to two weeks lang yata yang Executive Education. At bakit kailangang magsablay sa pag receive ng ExEd cert eh hindi naman graduation yun.
This year, I've had to deal with ash from a volcanic eruption, the longest and one of the strictest lockdowns in the world, three terms of online teaching, and last week, a flood that engulfed my family's house. I wish I could include these in my CV--metrics don't see struggles.
So Marcos Jr. won the election. Philippine democracy literally died. Linguist Twitter, please hire me. I'd literally settle for a pre-doc position. Just get me the fuck out of here before Marcos Jr. jails me for refusing to enable his historical revisionism.
Cleared my office at the MPI tonight. Not a stranger to saying goodbye to people and places due to the mobility that comes with academia, but this one stings particularly bad. I'll miss the Institute, its wonderful people, Göttingen, and saying danke schön all the time. 😭🇩🇪
Last night's Language, Ethnography, and Reflexivity roundtable was amazing! Learned so much from
@TupasRuanni
,
@BeaLorenteP
, and Angela Reyes! Thanks to those who spent their Saturday with us!
Thanks so much,
@agemig_MPI
, for taking me back to
@mpimmg
! The Institute always inspires me to keep going. Göttingen feels like home cos of these wonderful people ❤️
Great to have
@RaymundVitorio
with us again
@agemig_MPI
. Today, he is holding a workshop on how
#SocioLinguistic
perspectives can enrich interview data analysis.
#Interviews
are not just a research instrument, but also a social practice & form of “collaborative achievement”.
We're still doing our Zoom thing (LOL PH Covid Response) and we are so delighted to have Ben Rampton! Nov. 19, Friday, 6-8PM (GMT+8). I'm moderating this event with the amazing
@nicguinto
! Come join us! Register at :)
One of the highlights of
#ss23hku
so far, for me, is
@DrJonathanRosa
's presentation and responses. Love the point on aiming for legitimacy as a way of getting out of the abyss vs. rejecting the logic that puts one in the abyss altogether & the danger of fetishizing language.
Former President Aquino passed away today and my feed is definitely feeling the loss. Thank you for your service, PNoy. I swear when it's Duterte's turn I'm gonna throw an effing street party, with DJs and all.
Very happy to announce that our special issue, "On-site processes of sociolinguistic differentiation," is finally out in Multilingua! Thanks to the editors for the support. My SI co-editor, Gilles Merminod, and I are very grateful!
So I decided to buy an exercise bike because I wanted to be healthy again. I had to carry the bike from the lobby to my flat (like 50 steps?), and boom, I strained (or tore???) my back. Adulting is hard, yes, but adult physiology is a whole new level of monstrosity.
Tomorrow, I'm having my last lecture in my IntroSLX class (undergrad freshmen). Of course I'm using this as an excuse to have
@carlyraejepsen
in my slides! 🎼 In your fantasy, dream anout me and all that we could do with this emotion 🎶
We need to do everything we can to fight for
@lenirobredo
. GET PEOPLE TO REGISTER, GET PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR HER! Never forget that Phillip Phillips beat Jessica Sanchez because the good voters didn't vote!!! Hahaha.
Did a guest lecture about language and party island tourism at the Institute for African Studies and Egyptology at the University of Cologne today! Grateful for my very welcoming hosts, Prof. Angelika Mietzner (and Prof. Anne Storch), Cassandra Gerber, and Janna Perbix.
So we're having a thing on Saturday, June 20th, 7pm (GMT+8 Phils). We will talk about our current projects, sociolinguistics in the Global South, sociolinguistics in the age of corona, and more academic banter! 😀
Zoom event (). No registration required.🤗
Presented my book proposal manuscript and current project updates in the meeting of my MPI department today! Received lots of amazing comments and suggestions. Very happy to be here!
Marcos is appointing his VP, Sara Duterte, as Secretary of the Department of Education. They're not even masking their historical revisionism!!! RIP Philippines.
Got a PHP 500 voucher which I thought was only for Krispy Kreme. Only realized after paying that I could have used it in other shops. Now tell me what do I do with 13 donuts thank you very much
I've been in Germany for a little more than a week now. Everything's been great so far--really having a fantastic time. But man, oh man, these square pillows are killing my neck. 🥺
All made possible by the Ageing in a Time of Mobility group (
@agemig_MPI
). Thanks to
@meghaamrith
for the trust and support! ❤️ Excited to see former colleagues at the MPI and be part of ATM! 🇩🇪
The last pre-covid pic of myself. This was taken two weeks before the lockdown. Gosh, I was so much happier then.
Sadly, the world is moving on from covid, and we are certainly getting left behind. :(
Sociolinguist Problem
#4328953
: Whenever I see "Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse," I mistakenly read it as "Spider-man: Into the Super-diverse" (Vertovec, 2007; Blommaert, 2010). 😭🕷🕸
My NY resolution was to work less and sleep more, so I ransacked (lol) IKEA yesterday and I realized (1) lights are awesome and (2) Swedish bed measurements are weird.
Probably one of the latent reasons why I became a linguist: when I was a child, we were told by teachers that spelling Christmas as "Xmas" was blasphemous because it equates "Christ" to X-rated things. 🤯🤪🙄
At a hardware now. Overheard a Spanish man angrily complaining to someone on the phone that "The Philippines has way too many public holidays." Sorry to break it to you mate but your ancestors are responsible for this. 🙄
Do 4 years of undergrad, 2.5 years of MA, 4.5 years of PhD, eat expired bread while doing a PhD in England (the PhD poverty), only to be told by a Marcos fan that "Matuto ka nga magresearch, puro ka pinklawan propaganda, at di mo naman alam paano educational system sa England"
I TA-ed IntroLing numerous times in grad school, and this term, I'm finally teaching it as lecturer. It's so fun to teach! So fun to guide students in the amazing field of linguistics. (Even though I have to pretend that I know and enjoy syntax hahaha)
In primary school, we had to have an "Assignment Notebook" (AN): a to-do list/planner. We were only allowed to play when parents saw that we've completed everything in the AN. The good old days when our to-do list was a finite thing, not this unending list of torture methods
